WORTH IT
So I have a port wine stain on my face and neck. I started treatments when I was 3 weeks old. I switched doctors at 5 years old due to no change and scaring left from the doctor. I was with the second Doctor till I was 16. My birthmark would fade and come back but never gone. I was told it would be gone at 5, then at 12 and then sometime after 16 but there was never any signs of improvement. At 16 I gave up on all of it and went through a rough time in my life. When I started college I decide to look for another doctor that could help me. He has been great, I am on my 6th treatment with him tomorrow and my birthmark has faded so much that it's hard to see in photos now.
Before my new and final Doctor I had over 200 laser treatments without any changes but with only 6 it has faded at least 55%.
So I'm writing this so people won't give up in finding a treatment. If what you are seeing doesn't please you then find a different Doctor that can help. I almost stopped in trying and I'm glad I didn't. Also the cost of treatments is unknown to me since I have had so many but my new Doctor I do not have to pay a sent for the treatments.
Also I have never covered up my birthmark with makeup since it is was makes me me and the idea of hiding g something that has made me the person I am today just doesn't seem right. But I don't want to live with it for the rest of my life so hopefully in a couple years I won't have to worry about meeting new people and wonder what they thought.

Do you know what kind of laser was used. I currently live in Virginia but am originally from Rochester. Had 3 treatments done for my pws as a teenager (in Rochester) that would blister/scab and take 2-3 weeks to heal. Had 6 more treatments while in Hawaii in my early-mid 20s using a V-beam pulse dye laser. No scabbing or blistering but pws would eventually darken again after treatment...seemed to lighten temporarily though.

A pulse dye laser is what is normally used. There are different settings that can be used that will increase the intensity of the laser or the depth of penitration. PWS birthmarks are difficult to get rid of especially later in life. I've noticed with treatments that are 3 months apart it lightens my birthmark. Right after the treatment I'm bruised for about 10 days and it lights after that. I haven't had a treatment in about 4-5 months and it looks like it's darkening. I know that if you treat it till it's almost not noticeable you still have to go back every 6-12 months to get a treatment to keep it from darkening again.
Sorry for taking sooooo long to answer.

I'm sorry it took so long for me to answer. His name is Dr. McMeekin and he works out of the Genesee Valley Laser Centre. You can call or send them an email. And covering up with makeup won't make you feel beautiful, only realizing that who you are is beautiful. It sucks living in a country that is so built on this imaginary person that everyone should try to be. Other places in the world isn't like that, I've been to Europe, Caribbean islands, South America and even Hawaii and I never felt like I was different. People would look at me as if I was a "normal" person and talk to me normally. I do struggle with my birthmark still and the only advice I can give is to never let your birthmark hold you back. Do and go anywhere you want. And one of the good things about birthmarks or anything that looks "different" is that people will always remember you! I met someone a few months ago that remembered me from a summer camp over 6 years ago. Or the fact that I don't have to wear lip stick because of my PWS they are deep red and plump. Just somethings I like to think about when I'm feeling down.

Who is the doctor that helped you?

Hey I have one too.. i like mines though.. it did make me a bit insecure growing up..I did receive laser treatment at a young age but decided to discontinue due to burning and scaring.. I think your birthmark looks great.. I bet most of us with this similarity all have great personalities.. lol

I understand about stopping treatment, I did a few times. I like my PWS but I don’t. It’s less about me and more about not wanting to have to watch people’s eyes search over my face while I talk to them lol it’s distracting. And yes, I agree we all end up become great people!

Answering Question
Alice121August 30, 2016
I have only had the Pulse Dye Laser used on me. The difference was in the strength of the laser and the technique used. My first 2 doctors didn't have it figured out but my last Doctor some how made all the difference. I noticed with him I had a lot more bruising after treatments, they would be dark purple and wouldn't lighten for 10 days but before it would be slightly darker and the bruises would fade quickly. Also I was told never to use ice before my treatments since it shrinks the blood vessels, I know it hurts more when not using ice but that is the price we must pay.
-Hope this helps!
Here are photos from 2011-2016. As you can see it has lightened a lot. Some days it does look darker and in photos it can look like nothing's there even though I know it's still there. I don't wear makeup unless it's after a treatment and I'm bruised but that's mainly for everyone else so they aren't shocked when they see me. Also I don't like photos and these were all I can find that shows the color differences well.

I have had a very similar experience with unsuccessful treatments. Can I ask if you had 'black dots' appear after the treatment?
August 24, 2017
I have gotten dark purple bruises that are shapped as circles all over the treated area. The darker they are the more it's working BUT if they are black and are turning into scabs or blisters means the treatment is too harsh and the doctor should lower the intensity. If that's so, you need to mention this the next time you goto the appointment so it won't happen again. But bruising is normal and dry skin can happen if you don't moisturizer. It helps a lot if you use ice packs on it the first 12 hours, I normally take two small ice packs and rotate them around. I also might fall asleep with a cold cloth to help. And use a moisturizer that is gental without frgrence. Hope that helps.

I also have a birth mark exactly in the same places as you and the same intense purple. I have felt the same as you about not covering it up. I have has 2 types of lasers in the past and some small areas have lightened where some have disappeared. I stopped for many years waiting for newer technology and am now going to begin treatment again.

Next Steps
Alice121August 24, 2017
So big moves, I've moved to Tennessee and will be living here for a year. I was keeping up with my treatments, 11 so far with my newer doctor. It's lightened a lot but because of my age it takes longer for it to be as light as I would like. I'm trying to get an appointment with the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. I'm hoping going somewhere that there are a lot of specialists in vascular and plastics. I'm wanting to see if there is a more aggressive approach than the lasers I've been using for the past 22 years (since medicine is always advancing). Also, I had a lip surgery done a few years ago, issues occurred and it wasn't stitched up as well as it should have. So I would like to get that fixed as well. But I'll update you guys on what happens.

is it your 11th session of puls dye leaser?
December 5, 2017
It was my 11th session with my current doctor and the pulse dye laser but I’ve had well over 200 other sessions with the pulse dye laser with other doctors that didn’t seem to change the darkness of my birthmark.

It seems the bruising is important , if it doesnt bruise , then it hasnt worked.. i am on my 4th session next week..i cant remember if mine bruised last time , it sure looked scorched underneath the skin , good luck to you
Wow, great review, thanks for posting! Do you have any pictures you can share?
How long do you have to wait between procedures?
