First 10 Days! Gastric Sleeve Surgery
In trying to find out about the gastric sleeve journey I never found any information about what happens immediately after surgery, so here's my experience:
Day 1: Surgery day, awaken from anesthesia to confusion, stabbing stomach pain (doctor warned me). I only had ice chips 5-6 hours after surgery.
Day 2: Only had ice chips, stabbing abdominal pain, extreme bloating (could not pass gas); tried to walk it out but it became too painful.
Day 3: Had broth and sugar-free gatorade after being awake 5-6 hours, No Gulping! You'll see. (very painful to gulp anything). Intense acid reflux that was strong and intermittent. Finally passed gas which seems like TMI but it's really relevant to know related to recovery. (released for home)
Day 4: Did a 15 minute walk outside, painful but necessary. Had stabbing pains in my sternum area when not aware of how taking gulps of liquid hurt. OMG! Also, you have to expand your lungs. It's hard to breathe deeply. Coughing also hurts.
Day 5: Felt much better, no pain except in stomach incision area but only when I accidently bumped it. Yikes! Had four holes, but all pain had been managed by medication. Able to clean incision area. Still on broth and gatorade. Acid reflux remains and big swigs of liquid is not advised even when I was thirsty. Laughing and coughing still hurt. Tried sugar-free Chai-NO Bueno! Almost immediate diarrhea (four pound down by this day).
Day 6: Felt much better, no more bloating. However, my stomach made a lot of loud noises (not from hunger), so I named my new stomach Lucy. Over these day, still on broth, gatorade, and water.
Day 7: Tried a clear soup with protein. DO Not do it! OMG repeat of day 6, something about protein at this stage is out of the question. Plain is the game. Only slight abdominal pain when moving around but otherwise I felt good.
Day 8: In slight pain, but able to have broth, gatorade, and water. I put too much seasoning in my broth and that was a mistake. Again plain and basic flavor. No cravings because there is too much pain to even think about regular food.
Day 9: Patience is required, now food looks good, but I knew better. Not hungry but this began my journey into knowing when I've been eating for pleasure and not hunger. Journal about it; it helps. No gulping. (down 9 pounds)
Day 10: Feeling good. No gulping (see the pattern here). No sugar free pudding (trust me). No real pain, no hunger and breathing got better and easier. Now I could laugh and cough with only a slight amount of pain.
I started at 176 at 30 days, I was 155. Still not hungry, still no gulping, and no "real" meals. I only eat mash potatoes and gravy, add food slowly. I am practicing eating small portions, which is really easy at this stage. Overall, it was totally worth it because I had been exercising 6 days a week and eating less (but still too much) and I continued to gain or maintain. Best of luck to you. Any questions, message me.
