This product needs to be pulled from shelves! I had 1 cc Voluma 4 weeks ago and immediately felt ill. Within days developed redness, nodule, swelling, and a black eye. At first, I suspected this was part of the general "2 week typical Voluma symptoms," but within 2 weeks, I'd developed an infection and painful lump that was 1.5" in diameter on my right cheek. Began double rounds antibiotics and Hylenex right away. Another lump sprouted on the other cheek about 10 days into antibiotic regimen and after 1 round of hyalaurindase. Both turned out to be abscesses which had to drained. It took the doctor 45 minutes to drain both as there was so much "gooey substance" which was blood mixed with pus. We are doing Hylenex every 2-4 days now to be more aggressive. In the meantime, check out the FDA website for complaints about this poison. Turns out symptoms like granulomas, infections, nodules, biofilms, abscesses, hypersensitive immune reactions and allergic reactions are not so rare! I pray I won't have scarring or permanent damage from this living nightmare. I will keep you posted on progress, if treatment protocol works and will post pics soon.

You should of had it dissolved underc the guidance of a sonogram that way their not chasing the filler around

I am not sure and ultrasound will give much data of value. Large deposits of filler may be visible on it but small droplets which are just as likely to become nodes are not going to be. Ultrasound does not have that high of a resolution power.

I have a biofilm most likely, per the doctor. I’m now back on broad spectrum of two types of ABs and healing quickly. we should not have ever stopped antibiotics. need to be on for at least two weeks one the nodules completely go away.

Inflammatory (Hypersensitive Foreign Body Reaction)
Greyeyes4848February 27, 2018
Update after visiting my doctor today:
What I'm experiencing is most likely an inflammatory hypersensitive foreign body reaction and not infection (doctor suspects this because reactions occurred in both cheeks and cultures came back negative - although this was expected since that is typically the case). I will remain on antibiotics through the end of this round. In total, I will have been on antibiotics for 3.5 weeks.
The "goopy" substance aspirated from my cheeks was likely a mixture of blood, filler, and a biochemical substance produced by my body in response to foreign bodies. I had 50cc's aspirated in total (about 25cc from each cheek) at one time. Nodules significantly reduced and overall well-being improved immediately (and continue to improve) post-aspiration.
To date, I've received Hylenex administered every few days in the following doses: 50, 60, 25, 25 per cheek, totaling 320 units. Injected directly into the nidus of each nodule and surrounding tissue. In a few days, I'll report on progress. For the record, I had 1cc Voluma (1/2 each cheek). Voluma takes a more to dissolve and often multiple rounds (I've heard it can be 2-3 times more than other HA fillers due to cross-link technology). I have noted improvement with hyaluronidase up to 48 hours post treatment with the enzyme.

Have you used any other fillers prior to Voluma? I had the same reaction and it was a nightmare. I had been using Radiesse for years with great results no issues. Decided to try Voluma for a longer lasting effect
February 28, 2018
mbw054: yes, I used Voluma exactly two years ago in the same area (2cc's to the cheek area) and Juvederm placed into the nasolabial folds. I am not sure if it's related, but about 5 weeks after that injection, I did get a strange boil/breakout right on the nasolabial line where Juvederm was placed. It tested positive for bacterial infection and cleared up with antibiotics. Otherwise, I experienced no issues with the fillers. However, I have decided that I'm done with fillers forever. I do like my face and this scary experience has made me realize that I'd rather live with wrinkles than risk another infection/rejection or worse, disfigurement..

Thanks for your input. My cheeks are extremely hollow and aside from fat transfer which is too invasive for me I was going to wait and give Radiesse another try with my original injector if he’s ok with it. I’m wondering if fillers with HA cause these issues
March 1, 2018
Please reconsider radiesse or fillers. The reported complications of Radiesse are worse than HA fillers and only Sculptra rivals. See FDA complaints here (type "Radiesse" into brand name and update date range): https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfmaude/search.cfm

I’ve heard about Sculpture and I’ll definitely look in Radiesse but I’ve used it for years with no problems. Different injector maybe that’s the issue. I’m just beside myself with the way my face looks

I was told I was having an allergic reaction as well. NO! It is an infection! "Biofilm infections related to cosmetic fillers" are extrememly difficult to get a positive culture! The bacteria is kept safely in the biofilm substance and it's difficult ro find that exact location. These infection can lay dormant for years and any sort of stressor can activate it. Very disfiguring if not treated appropriately. These infections are often diagnosed through their symptoms from experienced doctors and not through cultures themselves. If you have a few minutes, please read my review. I posted pics and I have many more pics! Hyaluronidase the areas until you are sure it's gone!

Biofilms from dermal fillers are treated with a combination of long-term broad spectrum antibiotics and hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler. If an abscess forms, incision and drainage is also necessary.

Often, it will take many months to resolve with multiple hyaluronidase treatments.

I am not sure that I am having biofilm..2 months after Restylane my left eye startd swelling then after 5 days other eye also started swelling ,took antibiotic, anti inflammatory & anti allergy for two weeks .short steroid course..now all swelling is gone but it left web like spreaded lump on my under eyebone ...
July 11, 2018
Lumps are not bothering because they can’t be seen but redness on my skin irritates & I am scared what if swelling happens again and lump start increasing in size ?
July 11, 2018
Should I continue antibiotics for one more week ? & then leave these lumps to go away by themselves? Because Restylane’s life is 6 months to 2years maximum ...I am really scared of hyalurondase
July 11, 2018
Please don’t be scared by Hyaluronidase. The amount you wold need is minimal and safe. You should see your physician to dissolve the lumps as this is the protocol for your symptoms. It’s likely infection but even if it is not, the protocol (antibiotics until nodules clear plus Hyaluronidase to dissolve) is the same.

I had been using Juvederm for years and it was wonderful. This year my doctor talked me into Voluma, my God what a disaster! It's nearly a year and I still have extreme edema, discoloration, bumps, golf balls, a real nightmare. The worse thing is no doctor wants to treat it, they will not get involved with another doctor's mistake. I am really over this, and do not know if an end to it is near. It may be permanent. I don't know what to do. Reading all these posts are helpful. Thank you.

Please contact Dr. Catherine Duburow in Iowa. Her treatment protocol is what cured me. I've given her contact information in my post. You should have all the product dissolved. It's really the only way for your symptoms to dissipate. I wish you a full recovery. It's hard and I empathize what you're going through. The silver lining is that it's not forever. Hang in there!

I'm very sorry to hear you're experiencing similar adverse reaction to filler and possibly have a bacterial infection. What treatment protocol is your doctor following? Are you on antibiotics? Receiving hyaluronidase to dissolve the filler? Sending you well wishes.

No, he felt it could be treated with a cream, but the cream make me much worse one time I used it. I have to let him know. I am using neosporin gel, it's the only thing that reduces the swelling and redness, but it's a temporary thing. I am copying your replies to give my doctor. Hopefully, we can start a treatment soon. I'm getting scared I will permanently damaged by this. The company said they were going to investigate, they did nothing. No one wants to discuss it, this is the nightmare of it all. I have a good doctor now, but he feels it's been in too long to dissolve.

Happen to me too. Crazy that the dr’s act like your the only case. He said he even checked with his Voluma rep & they never heard of this happening. I found another dr that helped dissolve it. Immediately felt better but I feel like it also dissolved my natural fat.

More Helenex...

Last week, I had another 30 units of Hylenex added to my right eye where swelling persists. It helped but the swelling continues. My doctor said he could feel the needle going through something "gritty" when he inserted the needle to administer the enzyme. Both cheeks feel irritated and sore at times. Sometimes they look flushed. I'm sure I will need more but we are taking it slow so that there is no damage to my own hyaluronic acid. I know this is a widely debated topic, but I flooded one cheek with Hylenex last month when this nightmare first began and there is a noticeable dent in that cheek that is not getting smaller with time. That said, I'd rather have a dent than this poison in my system.
My doctor's nurse was asked to present my case at an Allergan conference this week. I am curious whether anything she learns will change my own treatment protocol and I'm eager to share what we've been doing so others won't have to go through this ordeal. By the way, the treatment protocol we mostly followed (mostly because we did it in smaller doses but otherwise the same) was written by Dr. Catherine Durboraw. She is simply amazing! I found her on RealSelf.com by a few patients who had consulted with her. She was so helpful throughout this process, shared her treatment protocol and offered to discuss with my doctor. While they did not speak live (even though I encouraged it), he was open to reading her protocol, he spoke to me about it and he implemented much of it. Only then did I began healing. Feel free to message me if you'd like additional information. Here is Dr. Catherine Durboraw's email: drdurboraw@gmail.com. She is simply the best and truly an angel!

UPDATE: regarding the "dent" I had in late March after several rounds of hyaluronidase (brand Hylenex), it went away within a couple of weeks. I don't notice any damage to my body's natural tissues. Just FYI as I know some out there are concerned about this (as was I but had no choice since I've got to get this poison out of my system). Luckily I didn't have any long-term effects on my natural tissue. However, if that would have been the case, facial fat grafting would have been an option should I have needed it.
Don’t let anyone tell you different
A allergic reaction is to the protein in the fillers and the size of the molecules.
