"I am a 19 year old college student who has struggled with cystic and surface level acne since 8th grade"
My history with acne:
My acne started to flare up in 8th grade right before transitioning into high school. Because this was my first encounter with moderate to severe acne, my doctor first prescribed topical ointments including Benzoyl Peroxide, Retinol and more to control the break outs. After a year on topicals, I added antibiotics (Doxycycline- can't remember the dosage) to my regimen. I was on antibiotics for nearly 3 years with moderate results and breakouts every now and then. A new dermatologist I saw in 2016 was shocked and concerned that I had been taking this antibiotic for so long without extremely noticeable results! She immediately took me off of Doxycycline and switched up my topicals. After a month or so of being off the antibiotic, I realized there was no change in my acne- I could have stopped taking it long before she told me I had to.
From the later end of 2016 up until the summer of 2019, my acne was easy to control, I would get pimples on my forehead and chin mostly which I could put overnight topicals on to control the inflammation. It wasn't until the summer before I left for college that my acne started to become severe again. I started to get deep, painful pimples on my cheek bones, around my mouth, and chin area. This is when I decided to go back to the dermatologist.
Why I said no to Accutane (twice):
The first ever time I heard the word 'Accutane' was in 9th grade when my topical and antibiotics weren't completely clearing my skin as they were expected to do. My mom was nervous about putting me on because of the worst case scenario reviews every one reads online/associates with Accutane. There was also a hesitation to put me on birth control pills as a 15 year old. We said no and continued to switch up my prescriptions and take the 'trail and error' route. When I came back in 2019 with severe acne my doctor highly suggested that I consider Accutane, but I was scared- like most people are with this pill. She assured me that I was a perfect candidate for this medicine but I said no again. My acne had only gotten worse since that visit in the summer. I was so tired of trying new medicine, so I booked my next appointment in May of 2019 with the intention of finally accepting Accutane.
What makes me breakout?
When I first had acne problems, I was in 8th grade so I want to believe it was hormonal. In high school I started to notice that when I ate fast food, sweets or greasy foods I would break out on my chin or cheeks. I have never had much of an issue with my forehead acne but I do notice that I will get an occasional breakout when I'm under a lot of stress. In October of 2019, I got the Nexplanon birth control implant- this is when I saw my acne at its worst. A month into having the implant my face was covered with deep cystic pimples and whiteheads all over (even my forehead). I was terrified and humiliated to leave the house- even with makeup! My OB told me that the side effects (acne) would eventually level out at around the 6 month mark. It's been 8 months with the implant & I can agree my acne has gotten better but this "better" is not good by any means. I still notice, however, that my skin is clearer (only a few pimples) when I eat clean foods, less dairy, and only drink water.
Day 1:
June 7th, 2019 is my first day on Accutane. Obviously, there are no changes. I still hate my skin, but I am expecting for this to take time! I have attached pictures of my face (taken last night before bed)- I have semi dry skin but it looks very shiny in the photos because I used coconut oil to moisturize. I've been reading reviews on this website for months before building up the courage to try out Accutane for myself. I hope my reviews will be more helpful in the future and I'm looking forward to see how my skin will change.

I am 8 days in and my skin is breaking out worse than it did before I started the meds, but not the worst it has ever broken out. I've seen this before with other acne topicals I've used so I'm trusting that "it gets worse before it get better"
Side Effects-
My lips are super dry but Aquaphor seems to help with that as long as I put it on every few hours. The worst side effect I have noticed is dry eyes. I wear contacts so at the end of the day my eyes tend to get slightly dry, but my vision started to get blurry and my eyes started watering/ becoming red at the middle of the day which is unusual. Eye drops help for a little but the dryness comes back in half an hour or so, I just switch to my glasses when the dryness gets too bad.
Skin Care-
???? I've had a skin care routine for as long as I can remember but now I can't use half of the stuff I use on my face because it will be too harsh on my sensitive skin. As of now I'm using a salicylic acid night time moisturizer. I'm open to suggestions on natural remedies and skin care tips!
*Attaching some pics with and without makeup so you can see the difference in redness*

Hello I just turned 30 an im on my 4th month being on Accutane it ms not fun at all sometimes second month into it i got fed up with the dry cracked lips and scaly skin (working in the medical field speaking to the public face to face can be embarrassing) however it has been worth it my skin looks the best it has in years. Here are few tips in skincare that has worked for me. Morning- i was my face with cerave hydrating cleanser its best to stick to simple fragrance free buy hydrating cleanser as cleanser containing in salicylic will dry you skin and potentially will make acne worse now that ur on Accutane. Whilst my face is slightly still wet i apply neutrogena water cream/gel this is super hydrating best to use when face is wet to prevent water loss from skin. I then apply sunscreen. Sunscreen is the most important step in my skincare as it plays a major role while on accutane as my skin is super sensitive to the sun. I then apply Cerave moisturiser cream. These skincare products have helped me so much its not expensive but the products are simple and effective with no fuss ingredients. My night time routine is the same but i apply Laniege sleeping mask or The Ordinary Rosehip oil before bed as it helps nourishes the skin. All the best on your journey hope you have a positive outcome at end of it good luck

Wow, that was very helpful! Thank you. I will definitely be looking into the Rosehip Oil, I've heard really great things about that one. Congrats on your pretty skin!

I’m thinking salicylic too harsh. Try one without exfoliating properties...I’m using Dermalogica intensive moisture

Use cerave hydrating cleanser day and night. For a cream use cerave moisturizing cream at night on face and neck, and cerave facial moisturizing spf 30 lotion on face and neck during the day. Don't use anything else on your face. My face started clearing up on month three on accutane. I don't put anything else on my face, Because your skin needs to purge and using acne creams dries the skin more. Let the accutane do its magic. It does get worse before it gets better. I am on month 4 and am seeing great results. I take 40mg one day and 80mg on the second day. For dry lips aquaphor and I use it in my nose cause it gets so dry also. Always wear spf balm on your lips also when outside.

Oh yes... I've learned my lesson about SPF on my lips. Yikes. I just bought the cerave moisturizing cream to use in the AM because it's light and I use First Aid Beauty ultra repair cream at night, it works wonders for dryness. Thanks for the recommendation and encouragement!

3 weeks in

Three weeks into the treatment and my skin is probably the worst it's ever been. I'm feeling really sad but anxious to see what will happen as time goes on. I see my cystic acne disappearing then a new batch pops up overnight :( Hopefully in the next month I will see results
I went to the beach yesterday- on my body I used 50 spf lotion sunscreen and topped it with 30 spf spray sunscreen to make sure it was even, applied it this way multiple times & still got burnt... Sun sensitivity on this medication is no joke! On my face I used Sun Bum 40 spf facial sunscreen RELIGIOUSLY and luckily my face was fine. My lips, however, are so burnt that they're blistering and cherry red. It didn't cross my mind to use sunscreen on my lips but I will never make that mistake again. Aquaphor has helped a lot with the dryness/ relieves pain a little. I've been using Carmex 15 spf as well any time I walk outside.

Hi hun, I've been on accurate now for 3 months and skin is looking better than ever! 100% got the exact same side effects as you at the beginning. Face broke out like mad, the cystic acne that wasn't there to begin with appeared out of nowhere and I looked ridiculous. You could peel layers off of my lips and they were scabbing at the sides and I started to look like the joker! I had this until about 5 weeks in and then everything calmed down, the redness disappeared and the bumps were reducing in size. I started off on 20mg and I'm now on 60mg. Skins feeling great at the minute however everytime I up my dose my face breaks out. My advice is the persevere with accutane..everything gets worse before it gets better and trust me itll be worth it!! Ps.. Sun still affects me like crazy, sun burn constantly even if I've barely been in the sun.. Seems like that's a side affect that may continue until the end of the course.

That's so great to hear, congrats! I'm currently on 40 mg so we'll see if I get bumped up to 60 when I go in next Monday... I'm hanging in there, thanks for the kind note :)

Hi, I’m 4 months on Accutane and for me it only got worse and worse for 3 months, only just started to get better around the 4 month mark. I currently only have 2 under the skin spots and scarring. It’s rough when after a long time you think it’s gonna suddenly get better but it doesn’t, hang in there because it will
July 2, 2019
Ugh... I'm only 3 weeks in and I can't imagine it looking any worse than it does now. I'm definitely going to keep taking it. Thanks for your comment!

I was on it for 5 months,
I’m 44 and have had cystic acne all my life. Mine cleared at 4 and half months, been clear and off of it for 6 weeks. Never woken up and not needed make up in my life before! Worked for me.

Wow! Waking up and not having to put on makeup to go leave the house? That's the dream. Hopefully my picking and popping doesn't ruin my skin... Congrats on completing your journey, Personally, I feel like it's taking forever.

I had a similar horrible initial breakout on week 1 but after week 3 it was as clear as i been in months! Im doing 80mg a day which is really high tho so maybe that helped. I dont really have side affects which is whats crazy and im on to month two now
July 22, 2019
Ugh so lucky... I expected it to get worse before it gets better :/ I'm taking 40 mg a day so maybe next time I see my derm I will ask about going up.

Coming from a guy here, don’t stress to much. If anything you’re one of the most attractive girls I’ve seen in a while. I love your eyes and eyelashes. Hang in there and soon you’re confidence will go through the roof!!! And even so ppl now a day don’t really judge when it comes to acne. You’re beautiful , don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Hang in there on the accutane!!!! It will do its job!!! This is only temporary and in the long run, so worth it!!!
I was on accutane previously due to cystic acne and it did it’s magic for decades. Fast forward 20 years and now taking a round of 40 mg daily due to rosacea with pustules and a bit of cystic acne - I’m on week five and see great improvements on both conditions.
I can recommend Lipster for your lips, made for those lips who’s owners are on strong meds. I wash my face in the morning with water only and then at night with a gentle cleanser. At night after cleansing, I put a layer of Elta MD moisturizer. I use Avene for SPF.
Hope these tidbits help and stay the course!!!
