Ready to Face the World After FFS!

WORTH IT
My experience with Dr. Spiegel and the staff of the Spiegel Center was life-changing. From the moment I started interacting with the Center, I was immediately in professional and graceful hands that treated me with respect and dignity. My consultation was direct and informative, which left me with no unanswered questions, and an overwhelming sense of ease.

Eleanor, my patient care coordinator, even helped me ensure medical documents and called my primary care doctor's office to ensure everything was in order after I opened up about how nervous I was that they didn't produce my records and pre-surgical screening. I cannot tell her how much that meant and still means to me, how seen I felt, and how vital she is.

Juliana shared her FFS journey with me, showed before and after images of her procedure and its profound effect on her life, and presented real expectations for healing. There was even a period where she felt regret about the results as her face initially healed and how, over time, this feeling faded away as the weeks passed. Showing before and after pictures as a trans woman can be incredibly difficult. Despite that, she shared the profound result of her FFS and transition from the beginning. To see her journey, and to have this confident, happy woman sharing her joy about her own lived experience, reminded me that there was an entire community of incredible women who underwent their FFS procedure, and that story made me feel so much braver and more confident as I faced this life-changing moment.
My procedures included forehead contouring, a brow lift, a fat transfer to cheeks, a lip lift, mandible and chin contouring, and a tracheal shave. Immediately, and ever since my dysphoria about my brow ridge was gone and has never returned. My Adam's apple was finally gone. For God’s sake, I had an upper lip - the first time! Without any question, my FFS procedure has been instrumental in feeling safer in a world more and more permeated by anti-trans bigotry. The subtle and profound work of Dr. Spiegel and his team has changed my life.

While harrowing visually to my mom, who cared for me after the procedure, the healing process was over before I knew it. My lip lift scar is perfectly placed and is virtually unnoticeable. My trachea shave incision was also expertly placed and discreet. My mandible and chin contour took the longest to heal, but that's the price of doing business when essentially taking a Dremmel and shaving your forehead and chin into shape.

If you are considering the Spiegel Center for your FFS procedure, I encourage you to book your consultation, and I'm so happy for you!

Thanks for sharing your experience! It makes me so happy to read about life-changing gender affirming procedures. How was the recovery process? Did you have much pain/discomfort/downtime?

Hello Roger :)

I cannot recall much pain even during the recovery process. There was some at incision sites like the one on my scalp and the one for my lip lift that took a few days to not be as sore, but that quickly dissipated. It was a little difficult to speak clearly for several days afterward as the mandible and chin contour required incisions in my mouth in order to access those areas, and with stitches there, I spent a lot of time eating mac and cheese , drinking soup with a straw, and not doing a lot of talking. I am a voice actor, so "getting back to normal" and not having to overcompensate while speaking took about 2 to 3 weeks to be back to perfect clarity, but unless you work with a microphone inches from your face for a living, you will be back to speaking clearly in a week.

I definitely got tired quickly for a few days after the procedure and it took some time to get my stamina back.

Swelling is still somewhat present in my mandible area a few months after, but not in a way that anyone else even noticed.

Worth it, worth it, worth it.
