Lower Facelift, Fat Transfer and Lower Lid Lift - WORTH IT
WORTH IT
I spent over a year researching these procedures and getting opinions from other doctors on treatment options, I was thrilled to find Mayo Clinic trained and experienced Dr. Steven Jacobson in Minnesota I work in a public service industry and was very concerned that the change be subtle. I am 58 years old. Almost felt I had waited too long to start the process, but according to the different doctors I had interviewed prior, my timing was right according to my needs: Slouchy jowl, under eye wrinkles, creping neck. I was ok with the lips but was told a little fat injection there and in the cheeks would finish the look.
The surgery/procedure took about 4.5 hours, I went in at 7am and was out by 5pm . The biggest surprise was how great my neck looked immediately after the procedure - no more wrinkles! The biggest shock was the swollen look of my cheeks & lips, (this took a good 6 weeks to really look normal where people would not know the procedure I had done.) I didnt' get any significant bruising aside from a big bruise on one side of my lips from the injections. Dr. suggested (and supplied) Arnica pills and suggested I start taking Bromalain pills (Pineapple) prior to the surgery to reduce bruising and speed healing. I believe they worked -- I did not get any neck bruising which is common with a lower face lift.
I wore a "jaw bra" for 5 weeks after the procedure (about 18 hrs a day) then wore it at night until week 9 to reduce swelling.
My lips went down significantly (almost to my original state) - which I actually wanted -- didn't want any tell-tale signs I'd had something done. The cheeks are still a bit "round" but I think they are softening a bit as time goes on. I am at week 12 now and LOVE the results. I look 10 years younger and feel better than I have in years about my looks. The "jowls" are gone, my eyes seem brighter and my husband loves it :)
I was very thankful to have this site (realself.com) to refer to when I got nervous about the process once I'd had it done. It also helped to have 2 people I didn't meet face to face but talked to via the phone/text about the same procedure they had had done by the same doctor -- they were great support. You need to have someone to talk to as you heal. The unexpected emotions I experienced during weeks 3 -5 were this sense of loss of identity - which totally caught me by surprise. I had dimples like my mothers that were gone with the procedure, this was hard. They have returning (slightly), but they were also what aged me a bit.
It felt quite lonely going through this in the Midwest where people don't talk (or do?) this type of thing - I know better now that they do, it's the fear of being judged for doing something this costly/drastic to feel better about oneself. One person I confided in gave me the best complement and encouragement ever, she wrote: "You’re such a young spirit, very very active. Everything about you is youthful and spirited. Why not get the face parts to match your spirit?
I think it was really smart."
I would highly recommend Dr. Steven Jacobson, he saw me as much as I needed AFTER the procedure which got me through the tougher weeks. He really cares about his patients.
