Highly Recommend Dr. Munoz Meza
Overall, my experience with Dr. Munoz Meza and his staff was great. I had a procedure called blepharoplasty, where my upper and lower eyelids were refreshed. I love the results.
Dr. Munoz Meza’s assistant picked me up at the San Diego train station and drove me across the border into Tijuana. We stopped for bloodwork, and then ate lunch at a delicious Mexican restaurant across from Angelus Hospital. The rest of the afternoon was spent visiting a cardiologist and then seeing Dr. Munoz Meza.
The hotel accommodations were very nice, and there was excellent food and a convenience store right across the street.
The next morning was the surgery. I guess I’m a little modest, so I was surprised at the surgical center that I did not have any privacy to change into the hospital gown, but the very friendly anesthesiologist was nearby and he could see that I was uncomfortable, so he pointed me towards a restroom. After the surgery, the doctor’s assistant brought me back to the hotel and ordered room service for me, which was so helpful since my eyes were bandaged. Later that night, the doctor came by my hotel room to remove the bandages and check on me. The next morning, they picked me up and took me to the train station, and I was on my way home!
There are two drawbacks to having this surgery in Mexico, which I’ll describe below.
The stitches the doctor used were not the kind that dissolved, but instead had to be removed. I set an appointment with a doctor in Los Angeles, but he wouldn’t touch them. Luckily, I’m close enough to the border that I simply drove to Tijuana a week after the surgery, had the stitches removed, ate lunch in San Diego, and headed home. It wasn’t a big deal, but if I lived further away it may have been an issue.
From everything I read, cold should be applied to the eyes after the surgery to reduce the swelling. Unfortunately, I was unable to do that until I got home the next day. I have no idea whether or not it would have changed anything to have the cold applied right after the surgery, but it’s something I’ve wondered about.
All that being said, I would definitely recommend Dr. Munoz Meza, but definitely figure out the stitches beforehand. Knowing what I know now, I’ll either ask for stitches that dissolve, or I’ll just plan to stay in Tijuana for a few days. The food is delicious, and it would be a nice little mini-vacation.
