Not a Disaster but Not Good Either

I have Asian eyes and went to the doc for a subtle correction to lift skin that was starting to sag onto eyelashes. During the visit he said he does a leading edge procedure with self dissolving stitches on the inner eye that he has written articles about. A reputable doctor and a fairly simple procedure - I didn't really think to investigate this technique further... Now it is a year later and I have railroad type of scars on both my eyes. (showing both horizontal scar and vertical stitch marks across too) I have visited a scar specialist and was told that most doctors don't use these types of sutures because of high risk of scaring and that they usually use regular sticthes so that they can remove as soon as possible. Also, he changed the fundamental shape of my eyelid to a more European look which is not what I asked for. I specifically said that I like my Asian eye and it's taken a long time to start to come to terms that I don't look like myself when I look in the mirror.

First, I want to thank the thousands of happy patients of mine that have sent notes, e-mail, internet reviews regarding their satisfaction with their surgery. I take immense pride in delivering the highest quality results, as most of my patients are well aware of the significant amount of time that I spend with them to understand their desires and discuss their options and can deliver on these recommendations nearly 100% of the time.  I spend a lot of time with surgical planning and with patient care before and after surgery to maintain not only an excellent surgical result but a good relationship with my patients as many of them can gladly attest to.  On rare occasions, surgery does not meet the expectations of my valued patients and I always take full responsibility to correct any concerns of these patients that are usually quite simple in-office correction.  There are several inaccuracies in the description here that should be mentioned.  First, I generally do not use “self-dissolving stitches” nor have I written an article about this specific topic (despite the hundreds of peer-reviewed articles that I have authored as a pioneer, authority, and internationally recognized expert in cosmetic oculoplastic surgery). Second, one of my many articles discusses Asian Blepharoplasty and urges fellow surgeons to maintain the eyelid shape and ethnicity in most situations unless the patient insists on a change.  What seems to be apparent here is a miscommunication and disconnect here and I would be happy to rectify this situation if this patient would call my office to schedule an appointment to see me.

To post an update - yep still scars on the eyes. The scars do not sit in the crease of the eye like they are supposed to but above it. Doctor offered to cut them out for free in his office. Thanks, but no thanks. Suggestion would be to start listening to what a patient asks for and if they like their eye shape DO NOT make it into something else (that looks super weird and un-natural). I was shown exactly 1 photo example in my consult and even in that one, the person had thick fake eye lashes covering the eyelid. This doctor needs to step into the current century and post his work on social media so that you can see exactly what you will get. Also, someone in this field really needs to listen and not try to change your ethnicity when they are happy with it. It is not mis communication but mis -listening and being set in one's ways. Afterwards I was told - oh that's just a frame, your eyes are still the same. Yes, my eyeballs are the same but my eyelid shape is sadly no longer there and it is so over corrected that there is no skin left to change it. Mansplayning and patronizing afterwards also pretty much a no no I would say as well.

Same exact thing happened to me! He totally overdid me then gaslit me after when I tried to tell him about my concerns. He removed all the fat from my eyelids and hollowed me out…adding years to my look. I am so angry with myself for even agreeing to uppers as I initially only consulted for lowers but he talked me into it.

Oh and I forgot to mention now I don’t even have an upper eyelid crease.

Thanks for your bravery to say something... So sorry you went through this too. Hopefully speaking up will help other people. Same with me on the hollowing - a much older look on a younger person. Other doctors have remarked now that it was over corrected. Anyone considering this doctor, please bring a friend with you to the consult and insist on many before/after photos and exact explanation how you will look. And go see other doctors too - there are many newer techniques out there that I wish I had known about back then and follow them on Intagram for a good long while to see if you like that astetic.
