Upper Blepharoplasty Success!
As so many people's reviews have helped me on this site, I would like to post a detailed review. 110% Happy I did this proceedure!
I am 50 and my eyelids had really started drooping. I live in San Miguel de Allende Mexico and was looking for a plastic surgeon here but unable to find anyone in this town with a solid reputation, so I went to Dr. Berlanga in Celaya, which is just a 1 hour drive away. The Dr can recommend a private driver to take you to his clinic.
The clinic is nice, and some of the front house staff speak a little English. I was able to pay with my USA credit card with no extra fees (adding a 5% fee is common here, but they did not do that in this clinic). The Dr. speaks perfect and fluent English.
He is very kind, thoughtful, and friendly. I felt at ease with him right away and when my sister visited, she also saw him and liked him better than any one she had ever seen in Canada, over many years. He even gave me his personal cell/Whatsapp to contact him with any concerns.
I have had botox, C02 Lazer (twice) and now my Upper eyelid surgery with him.
I did not get "knocked out" and chose to be awake with local anesthesia.
Not sure I'd recommend that as it was a little scary to be honest, just knowing what was happening, as it was happening, someone cutting away my skin...was not super pleasant. But, it was "OK", I felt no actual pain.
Getting the twilight sedation is possible, and if you do the lower portion as well, is required.
The C02 Lazer and Upper Bleph cost me $40,000 Pesos combined. At the time that was about $2200 USD. A Fantastic price! C02 costs more than that in Canada!
I just had a consultation for my under eye area, and the cost of that alone would be $55,000 Pesos. That price includes the sedation that is manditory (with the lower eyelid surgery).
I really *Wish I had just done both the upper and lower at the same time, honestly! I could have taken the twilight sedation, and got it all done at once. Then there would have only been one recovery period, and one sedation. Oh well. You will be required to get some health/blood tests done locally before any twilight anesthesia is permitted, for safety reasons.
Ok, so - I am Extremely happy with my results from the skin resurfacing and the upper eyelid surgery though. I am 15 weeks post surgery now.
The recovery was about 2 weeks. I spent a full 5 days in Bed, slept upright for 4 nights (used about 10 pillows lol), was using frequent cold presses and being careful to let my skin heal. I looked up a bunch of YouTube videos for info on how to recover, and that was very helpful for hints and what to expect.
The C02 lazer took about 9-10 days to really recover from, and it really Hurts getting it, but I was just mildly sore after. Another reason to get the sedation if possible!
The eyes took 1 week to heal from the bruise, but one big bruise stuck around 2 weeks. Needless to say, I did not go out of the house for 2 weeks post surgery anyway.
I can confidently recommend this Dr. and these procedures. I wish I had done my eyes years ago! And now, I wish I had done the under eye as well, but I am very happy I did the upper at least.
One thing to note is the surgery and lazer took about 4 hours all told. The driver was waiting for me, and they put some special white healing cream in a Thick layer on my face, and totally wrapped my eyes up around my head, so I could not see Anything on the way home. You *will need help after this surgery, and you should set up all your recovery items in advance. I even had a cooler at my bedside and a bunch of Audio books as you are not supposed to watch TV Or a computer, for several days after surgery. Do you research and get prepared!
The clinic set me up with all the recovery creams etc, they went and bought them at the pharmacy for me in advance, and I paid them back at the clinic, another bonus. He even (at my request) got me a prescription only med to help with anxiety and sleep. I took a little before, and then for the first 4 nights to help me sleep as much as possible.
Lastly I'd mention the eyelids scar is visible and was raised the most over the 1st month. I did mild massage with Aquaphor on the scars for 4-5 weeks (after the first 2 weeks were done, that is). The scar is way less now but still visible, I got eye makeup primer so when I go out, I put that on under my eyeshadow and it helps to hide it. My eyelids were also Totally number for the first 2 months. It made it very hard to put makeup on! It's an odd sensation. The feeling really started coming back after the 3rd month, and this is normal and to be expected.
