My Excellent Revision Rhinoplasty Experience with Dr. Jin
I’ll start off by explaining my backstory. I am a 26 year old caucasian girl from Canada. I had surgery for a deviated septum many years ago, but it changed the appearance of my nose. It became much wider and bigger, I hated it. I proceeded to have cosmetic rhinoplasty surgery done in Toronto, Ontario but it was unsuccessful as there was no change in the appearance of my nose. Even my then-surgeon had admitted that the results were unsatisfying. I waited over a year to see if over time my nose would change shape, but it didn’t. It still looked very wide and big compared to my old nose, I really missed my old nose. I knew I wanted to give cosmetic rhinoplasty another try but was feeling very discouraged after the failed attempt from someone who was considered one of Toronto’s top rhinoplasty surgeons. That was when I started to look into getting surgery abroad. I discovered that Seoul, Korea is considered the ‘mecca of plastic surgery’ with some of the best surgeons in the world. After lots of research on searching for the best-of-the-best, I came across Dr. Jin. Even after consulting with a few surgeons via email, Dr. Jin stood out to me the most. He specializes in revision rhinoplasty and since I already had numerous surgeries before, I figured he would be the best person to help me achieve a desired result.
I started emailing Dr. Jin with many questions. He always emailed me back almost immediately, with thorough answers to every single one of my questions. What I also really liked is that the email responses came directly from him, not a secretary. I’m not sure how he did it considering he is such a busy man, but the fact that he communicated directly with me and with excellent response time was very impressive. His English is perfect, and his experience and skills are evident. My mother was very involved in this process as well and researched everything she could about him. He is a member of American Academy Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, American Academy Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and American Rhinologic Society.
After receiving the answers to all of my questions, I felt very confident in proceeding with surgery with Dr. Jin. I noticed my wide nose every single day looking in the mirror, and didn’t want to live the rest of my life noticing that, so I knew I wanted to give surgery another try. If it failed again, then I would just have to live with my nose the way it was, but I didn’t think another surgery could make it look any wider than it was already, so I figured I had nothing to lose.
Dr. Jin recommended a hotel near his clinic which we stayed at, it was a 5 minute walk and having never been to South Korea and not speaking the language, I was very glad Dr. Jin was so helpful on suggesting accommodation, transportation from the airport, etc. He went above and beyond to ensure my trip to Korea was a comfortable one. My mom came with me, we flew from Toronto to Seoul. I initially had a consultation booked with Dr. Jin one day prior to the scheduled surgery, however we arrived in Seoul a couple days earlier and Dr. Jin suggested we come to see him right away for a consult instead. We arrived at his clinic and were greeted by his assistant, a young girl (Kyle-Kim.. spelling?) who was extremely friendly and welcomed us right away. A few minutes later Dr. Jin arrived and before even introducing ourselves he knew exactly who we were. He welcomed my mom and I to Korea and invited us into his office. I once again explained my case and he and his assistant took a look inside and outside my nose. Considering my previous surgery history he agreed that returning to the state of my original nose is impossible, however he was very certain that an improvement WAS attainable. I completely understood I would never have my exact old nose back, but an improvement was the goal, and hearing him say that is all I truly all I needed to hear in order to proceed. The nurses right away took me aside to take before photos, blood tests, and x-rays (in case he decided to use rib cartilage) all within the vicinity of his clinic. We confirmed the surgery date and time and left his office feeling very confident. It was a quick, informative, and great consultation. I was also very happy that he suggested to see me a few days before the surgery instead of the day before. This allowed me to have more time to feel ready for the surgery, and allowed him more time to think about how he was going to proceed with the operation.
I arrived at his clinic at 7:30am the morning of surgery. His clinic consists of 2 operating rooms and private recovery rooms, the whole operation is very personalized and comfortable. My mom waited in my private recovery room as the surgery took about 4 hours. I was put to sleep and didn’t feel a single thing. Once I woke up, I rested until I was ready to be discharged. The ultimate goal was to make the bridge of my nose more narrow, and the tip more defined and less bulbous. Dr. Jin used a thin strip of cartilage from behind my ear to give the illusion of a narrow bridge. He defined the tip and left a very clean scar that was much nicer then the scar I had from my previous surgery. I left that evening with a cast on my nose and stitches both between my nostrils and behind my ear. I couldn’t notice any difference yet because of the cast and swelling, so I had to be patient. Dr. Jin provided me with antibiotics to take every day for the next week and ointment to keep the stitches moisturized. I was instructed to visit him the following morning to see how I was doing, and he suggested that as long as I am in Korea that I was welcome to come every morning just to ensure the healing process was going smoothly. Since he was 5 minutes away, that is what I did. This aspect of care and attention that he provided was incredible.
Following the surgery I had very minimal pain, if any at all. If anything I had more pain behind my ear from the stitches then I did on my actual nose. I did have swelling and bruising on my face for the first few days, but aside from that I felt incredible. My mom and I continued to sight-see and explore Seoul even the next day after surgery and every day after that. (Side note, Seoul is FULL of billboards/advertisements for plastic surgery. That’s how popular it is there. Girls will receive plastic surgery as their graduation gift from their parents after high-school, including rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, chin surgery.. it is extremely common which is why these surgeons are so highly experienced compared to perhaps surgeons in Canada).
Exactly one week post-op Dr. Jin wanted to see me to remove the stitches and cast. He removed both and gave me a mirror to look in. Although I was still swollen and a little bruised, I could notice the difference IMMEDIATELY. The improvement was obvious and I was so happy I almost wanted to cry. It took a few days to get used to my new nose, but I knew I had to be patient for the swelling to reduce more and to become familiar with my new nose. I thanked Dr. Jin for something I truly thought was unattainable at this point, and we flew back to Canada that same afternoon. It has now been exactly one month since my surgery, and I catch myself looking in the mirror feeling so happy that I got this surgery done. I used to look in the mirror and the “wideness” of my nose was the first thing I would notice about my face, it had completely changed the entire appearance of my face. Now when I look in the mirror I don’t even notice or think of that, I just have a natural proportioned face again, nothing “stands out” like it once did in a negative way. I feel so much more confident in myself, my appearance, my photos, and I just feel like myself again. It has been a long process but I am SO glad I found Dr. Jin, because he gave me my life back from something that had been bothering me every single day for so long.
I would 100% without hesitation, recommend Dr. Jin for revision rhinoplasty. I am already absolutely thrilled with my results just one month after surgery, and I know that it takes up to a year for the swelling to completely go down. His professionalism, communication, skill and attentiveness is phenomenal and I cant thank him and his outstanding team enough. I hope my experience is helpful to you in your rhinoplasty journey. I had read excellent reviews of Dr. Jin prior to my surgery, and they helped me with my decision so I hope mine will help you with yours as well.
