I've had a procedures with Dr. Mohebi, spanning the course of about three years. Two FUT, a course of SMP (scalp micro-pigmentation), and a small amount of FUE to conceal the FUT scar. Overall I've been very pleased with my experience.

Before my first procedure, I wasn't sure I wanted to do anything at all. My family has a history of baldness and I figured I should just accept it. But I'd been using Toppik to conceal my hair loss for a few years and the idea of just suddenly being bald seemed awful to me. I like how I look with hair and I wanted to do something to keep it. So I consulted with a bunch of doctors--even paid for some of the consultations--in order to gauge what could be done and what expectations I should have.

Most of the doctors were exact. I was told various numbers of grafts would be enough to get the look I wanted. Everything eemed a lot like what I wanted to hear. Dr. Mohebi was the last doctor I consulted with, and I felt like he gave me a more honest outlook. He didn't promise specific results. He told me the best and worst case scenarios. He suggested a number of grafts that fell right in the middle of the high and low suggestions I'd been given by other doctors. He told me exactly how the procedures worked, what to expect during recovery, and what I would need to do to conceal the surgery so nobody would notice. When I had further concerns later, I emailed him and received responses right away. I decided to choose Dr. Mohebi for my first surgery for all these reasons.

The first FUT procedure was for 2,000 grafts. I asked not to exceed that amount because I wanted my first procedure to be conservative. He explained that he'd attempt to go below that number but because of the nature of FUT, you can't know exactly how many hairs will be available from the transplanted area. Transection always occurs to some degree with FUT, rendering a number of grafts unusable. It's just a built-in downside to the procedure. Dr. Mohebi took a conservative strip but ended up with a little under 2,100 grafts. He knew I didn't want more than 2,000 and did not charge me for the extra grafts as a result. I thought this was very generous of him, as it required more work on his part.

The first procedure healed rather quickly (about a month before the scar felt normal, and only about 10 days before the grafts looked normal again) and the scar as minimal. I wanted to achieve more density, so about a year and a half later I underwent a second FUT procedure with Dr. Mohebi. This added greater density, and a fuller hairline, but it wasn't enough. Also, a small part of the scar stretched. This happens sometimes. Most of the scar was perfect, very small, and practically imperceptible. Due to my type of hair, it's easier to see the scalp at shorter lengths and the stretched area was easily visible.

My goal has always been to restore density and hide the scar, so Dr. Mohebi met with me multiple times to discuss what I wanted to do. I wasn't sure, but he was always patient and very helpful. He made sure I had answers to all my questions, allowed me to call him on his cellphone if I needed anything, and we finally settled on two courses of action: scalp micro-pigmentation (SMP) and a small FUE procedure.

SMP is sort of like a semi-permanent tattoo that places ink into superficial layers of the skin. It lasts a couple of years on average, and reduces contrast between the scalp and the hair, giving the appearance of greater density. The procedure was originally created for those who shave their head but wanted to look like they still had hair growing. It's very effective for this, but some people requested it to cover up scars and add density to existing hair. I wanted to pursue the latter option. I underwent three relatively short (approximately 3-4 hour) SMP procedures that added small dots to the front and back of my head to increase the appearance of density. This worked very, very well. I also was given SMP in my FUT scar, which helped reduce its appearance somewhat. It still, however, did not fully satisfy my goals.

To finish, Dr. Mohebi performed a small follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure. Whereas FUT removes a strip from your scalp and leaves a linear scar, FUE extracts individual hairs and only leaves tiny dot-sized scars that are basically imperceptible unless you shave your head. This allowed Dr. Mohebi to take existing hair and transplant it into the FUT scar to disguise its appearance further. We also used some additional hair to add density to the front in a few spots where the SMP wasn't as effective.

It has now been almost 11 months since the small FUE procedure and I am very pleased by the results. Six months in, I had been hoping for more. Now that closer to full growth is evident I can see what a large impact this small procedure made. I now worry a lot less about my hair and can go out without using any concealing products and it looks like I have a full head of hear. I've even been able to grow it longer, which was my ultimate goal. This has been a multi-year process with Dr. Mohebi and his staff, and they have always been very helpful and professional. If you're looking for a hair transplant surgeon you can trust and who will do the best to get you the results you're looking for, I highly recommend Dr. Mohebi.
