I am a 25 year old female and had toyed with the idea of getting my lips done for some time. For injections, I started off with medical Botox (for migraines), and after time I added cosmetic Botox, for my brows and a few lines in my forehead that I did not love, along with my crows feet. I thought about doing lip filler for a good couple of years before I actually did it, as I was nervous about spending the money on it (it being something you need to touch up at least a couple times a year to maintain) and I was worried of looking "done," or fake.
I finally did it in the summer and started off with a half a syringe ($350), via needle injection (not cannula) which gave me a beautiful but very subtle change. It just sculpted my lips a little bit and added a touch of volume with a hydrated look. The pain was minimal but keep in mind they do numb the lip area, on top of that I am quite pain tolerant. I was a bit puffy that day and the day after but it mostly settled down quite quickly, and I had a very very pale bruise.
While I was happy with the results, it wasn't what I wanted my end-goal to be. A few months later I went back for a second half of a syringe and it really made a difference, gave me more of a side profile too, but was still subtle. Again, she did the injections with just a needle syringe, and this time I did get a bruise outside of my lower lip but it wasn't anything major. With the second half-syringe I do feel I have bigger lips, especially when I wear lipstick, gloss etc., however I still slightly overdraw my lips, and I feel I may go back for one more half. Like I said, my lips are definitely fuller but not totally at what I had envisioned.
Hopefully in this case if its the look that I am going for, I can just go back every 6 months and do a half a syringe to maintain.
All-in-all I currently had gotten 1 full syringe over 3 months. I am very happy that I started slow with just the mini amount but probably could have gone back sooner for the second one (and eventual third) to avoid too much loss in the meantime.
I had decent lip size to begin with so I do recommend starting with the minimal amount, just to see how it looks and how much you like it or not.
