I was high risk for breast cancer. I decided after seeing consulting my family doctor, several oncologists, and 2 surgeons that my best chance for not getting breast cancer was to have a double skin sparing masectomy with reconstruction. Expanders were placed right after the masectomy. I developed a staph infection, which is rare, but not uncommon when you are doing skin (nipple) sparing surgery (part of my nipple did decay due to loss of blood supply causing the infection). The infection was caught early, but the expanders had to come out and I had to heal for 6 months. Dr. Song and his staff kept a close eye on me through all of it. While I was healing I decided to eat a clean diet, and exercise to be in the best shape I could be. I lost 16 lbs before having the next surgery - a latissimus dorsi flap with expanders. I recovered from that surgery with no problems and had the final reconstruction with implants in November 2015. I decided to also have a tummy tuck too! I was a size B breast cup prior to all of this, and went to a C cup. I love it! If I ever need any other type of plastic surgery - I will go to Dr. Song!!

I'm considering this as well, both my mother, grandmother and cousin on my mothers side had breast cancer. This a huge decision not just physically but emotionally, if you can PM me I would love to talk to you about this.

I would love to talk with you! It is a big decision, one not to make too fast (took me 2 years to decide) and not without its own risks. I'm glad I did it, no regrets!!!

See I'm the opposite, once I wrap my mind around something I get right on it. I trust that my first instinct is usually the right one. I have decided to have the BRCA testing done then I have two choices.
1. If I'm negative, move forward with my previous plan of a mommy makeover
2. If it's positive I discovered my insurance will cover a mastectomy and reconstruction at almost 100%. I also found a doctor in Birmingham who specializes in breast cancer treatment, mastectomies and reconstructive surgery, and I am very impressed with the results I have seen on his site so far. So at this point I'm waiting to get my test and results in mid March.

Whoo hoo, good for you! Where are you in your healing process? Is this part of your journey complete or are you recovering?
