WORTH IT
Think it's time I shared my story after a year and a half of treatment.

Got my tattoo about 10 years ago… I don't really 'regret' it, it was fun to have in my 20s, but I was never completely happy with it, the middle was done first and then after deciding it was too small I had the edges added later… Last year decided it's time to try to remove it. I was realistic about how long it would take and have usually left 8-12 weeks between treatments.

Started last year in May 2013 receiving treatment with a Q-switched laser… I was really impressed how much it faded after the first session (which in hindsight wasn't much) but it seemed to fade less and less each time… In total I received 8 treatments with the q-switched laser…. from the fifth to the eighth it didn't seem to fade at all... Despite trying to be careful I have a couple of small scars from scabs that were knocked after a shower. At one point I was told I seemed to have "resistant ink" and despite knowing at the beginning that the estimate of 8-10 treatments was likely a low ball, was really starting to think it wasn't going to fade further.

I'd been reading about the new picosure lasers since before I started treatment, and noticed a new clinic recently opened in Sydney, which is about 3-4 hours drive from where I live, so I drove up and was treated mid-October.

Wow! This laser is amazing. The fading from one treatment with the picosure has been significantly better than the last three treatments with the q-switched. It is a big drive and more expensive but will definitely not go back to the Q-switched.

People always ask if it hurts: to this I usually respond "ummm… it feels kinda like they're trying to cut my arm off with a laser"… but not with the picosure. Driving the three hours home wasn't a problem at all, whereas after treatment with the q-switched I couldn't wait to get home, lie down, and get some ice on it... It hurt heaps less and Keith (who treated me) went over it a couple of times with different settings. It didn't blister and therefore I didn't get any new scars.

Due to the differences between the middle and outsides of my tattoo (i.e. inks, tattooist, number of times they went over it etc), the outsides have faded much faster than the middle part. It's interesting that they say every person responds to the laser differently - the different parts of mine has reacted so differently! Before being treated with the picosure I was thinking I could totally live with how much the outsides have faded and just wanted the middle to fade more, but now I'm thinking I could get total clearance.

I'm not saying there's no value to the q-switched, it did fade my tattoo significantly to the point where you can't really see the front in a group photo, but the picosure has exceeded my expectations after only one treatment. I'm gonna wait til January for my second picosure treatment as it still seems to be fading, plus December is insanely busy!

The review below is based on the picosure clinic I was treated at as this review is going in the picosure area.

Hey. Thanks for sharing your story, looks like you've made great progress so far. Do you know what make/model the first laser you were treated with was? Was it a large machine or a smaller 'desk-top' one?

According to the reply from my original enquiry email it was a "revlite Q-switched NG:Yag laser from Hoya ConBio"

Ahh thanks. As far as I'm aware that's a pretty decent machine. I wonder why you didn't see much change during the last few treatments. Do you feel they were treating you aggressively enough? Did the skin look pretty beat up for a while after each session?

Yup they were super aggressive, it would take about two weeks for the redness to subside

I am really glad that you decided to share your removal journey with us, your results are great! Would you mind adding your thoughts about the pain in the comment section of this forum post, it's a pretty common question:

LASER TATTOO REMOVAL: IS IT PAINFUL?

use numbing cream it makes a world of difference. I have large black script across my entire stomach. the key is when you apply the numbing cream its essential to seal the numbing cream to the skin with celophane and tape creating a moisture barrier. Forget this step and your going to feel much more intense pain. Take it from someone treatments in across the stomach, make sure to seal the cream to the location using plastic wrap!

I used numbing cream and plastic wrap the first two sessions with the q-switched, but it was a lot of fuss for not much benefit. Both places I've been treated at have had the cold air thingo which I think is better… The pain with the q-switched wasn't just while I was being treated (which the cold air helps) it was worse after the treatment until I got ice on it, which I didn't have with the picosure.

I hear ya the q switch is definitely really painful especially on the initial treatments. I also use the cool air blower as well. My first 3-4 treatments were the worse. Including the afterburn. I highly recommend you look into pico vs q switch. The numbing cream I get applied is a benzocaine/lidocaine/tritocaine combo.

I also let the numbing cream sit for 45 mins sealed before starting the procedure. Make sure they coat it on there; some techs will put a lot while some don't. I've made the mistake of getting into conversations with them and not paying attention, big mistake make sure they coat it on and make sure they seal it tight if not it won't work.

Hey i have a similar dark black tattoo its script and was done by a professional. Ive had 6 treatments with Q-Switch, and 5 with the picosure. Id say im at about 50% fade maybe more. One thing people should know is the quotes they give you saying a certain amount of treatments are very wrong. The spas, clinics etc will lie to you in order to peak your interest and get your investment. Realistically, it will take 20-30 treatments to get full clearance on professional installed ink, (amateur ink will come out much quicker typically) . Im 12 sessions in. And believe i have another 8-12 to go before i see full clearance. At which point ill provide a post showing pics.

Hey clg0508, can I ask how far apart you're spacing you're treatments?
December 17, 2014
Minimum 8 weeks. I started in April 2013 and just finished my 12th treatment December 14. I'm anticipating at least another year. I just want everyone to know the truth vs the lies from the marketing put on by the doctors and spas. Be clear this will likely be a multi year process if you have professional ink and are looking for full clearance. Also stay away from anything but pico I won't get into those details now but as a patient of both I would strongly recommend pico only as it does not scar.
