I suffered from cystic acne as a teen, and was left with scars that have bothered me for my entire adulthood. I am a doctor, now in residency to be a dermatologist. I treat skin every day. It was horrible for me to see my own scars and want to hide my face, especially in a career where skin is the focus. I found myself trying to cover my scars with makeup, which only made them worse due to the "shadow" effect, especially in the sun. I decided I did not want to live with this insecurity and "ugly" feelings. I tried Fraxel treatments and fillers over the years, wasting thousands of dollars on treatments that frankly didn't work. Then I had my consult with Dr. Antell.
Dr. Antell was kind, reassuring, and brilliant. He explained to me all of my treatment options. He explained why dermabrasion was right for me, what I should expect, how it works, and how I would heal. His office staff as well as his nursing staff were the most friendly people I have met in a medical office (and I am a doctor saying so myself). They scheduled me for the procedure right away, knowing I had to go back to work in a few weeks. They worked with my schedule and I was constantly emailed or called before the procedure to see if I had any questions or concerns. It felt like hotel-doctor-service.
The day of my procedure, Dr. Antell introduced me to everyone in his OR (he has a duplex office with a wonderful sterile OR right in the same building, very convenient). He kept me calm, and also talked to me with genuine interest about my family and career. He gave me instructions on how to care for my skin after the procedure.
I did not feel a thing during the dermabrasion. I was numbed adequately, and my pain was managed perfectly. I followed Dr. Antell's instructions all week after my procedure, and I was also contacted by his nurse via phone call and email daily to make sure I was doing okay. I followed up in one week, and the results were magnificent.
I am writing this review after my one-week followup. My scars are gone. My skin is a light pink in the areas that were treated, but it looks like a mild sunburn. My swelling is gone. I had mild pain for only one day following the procedure, which was well controlled with extra-strength tylenol. I otherwise had no discomfort all week. It was incredible to see my skin heal more and more each day, and to have smooth, scar-free skin on my face. Dr. Antell's technique is the best you'll find in NY. Though you might call the procedure expensive, in the end it is the best investment you'll make. Rather than spending somewhere around $1000 per Fraxel treatment (and I had 4 of these treatments done with no effect), you can have your scars repaired (as best as they can be) with just one dermabrasion treatment. It is more than worth it.
Dr. Antell gave me my confidence back. His skill at dermabrasion, in my opinion as a skin doctor, is unparalleled elsewhere. On top of that, he is kind, genuine, honest, and brilliant. He cares for you as a person and as a patient. His staff is polite, friendly, and responsible. I never had to wait for my appointments--in fact, I showed up early and was seen early. I recommend Dr. Antell with no reservations. Trust me, I'm also a doctor. I am so grateful.
