The day of surgery

The day of surgery was terrifying for me to say the least. Because on top of me being nervous, my driver Pavel left me at the clinic in the dark at 5:30am by myself. I was a nervous reck to say the least. Not to mention, I was texting and calling everyone, from my friend that came, to Dr. Baez’s assistant Manwell, and even Dr. Baez. The clinic staff finally started arriving around 6am, thank goodness. After they took my blood pressure it was upstairs to surgery. About 8am, Manwell came in and had me fill out some papers and took my belongings for safe keeping. Then about 8:30am I finally met Dr. Baez for the first time. I was furious because I couldn’t get internet because of the bad connection, to show her my desired photos from her page. Not to mention, she really didn’t speak English, therefore Manwell had to translate everything. Thank goodness I did have a couple photos saved in my phone to give her a general idea. After that I waited about another hour or so then I was off to surgery.
During surgery I ended waking up, to only find out Dr. Baez wasn’t the one doing my surgery. As a matter of fact she was nowhere in sight, nor was she in the room. However, I did find 2 young men working on me. I remember asking them, where was Dr. Baez, and one of them spoke good English and replied well good morning to you. Then I told them that I was very thirsty. Then they were motioning the anesthesiologist to put me back to sleep. Then next I knew I was waking while they were transporting me to my room. Manwell came to check on me once I got in my room. I regret not bringing both juice and water to put in the refrigerator my your room. Because I was extremely thirsty, and no one told me that I had to bring my own drinks in case I became thirsty. The only thing that I brought to drink was ensure, and that was too thick. I mainly wanted either juice or water and the clinic didn’t have none. I was like “seriously.” Finally, Dr. Baez didn’t check on me until the following day before I was about to be discharged, and that was the very last time I seen her. The funny thing is while I was on the elevator being wheeled to the car, I ran into one of the doctors that was working on me during surgery. He seen me and immediately started laughing. I was like wait a minute, aren’t you the doctor that was there during my surgery, and he replied yes, and got off the elevator.

Daisy’s Recovery House was the worse

Our experience at Daisy’s Recovery House was a hot mess to say the least. The owner Daisy was not there, she said that she was in New York. However, we were met with her staff Lena, Mayleth, and 2 other girls that really didn’t speak that good of English, so I can’t remember their names. The first day that we arrived was horrible to say the least. She had us in a room where the bathroom shower leaked and the toilet leaked as well. We were told the toilet was leaking because people weren’t supposed to put tissue in the toilet, and that all tissue must be placed in the trash. However that doesn’t explain why the problem wasn’t repaired prior to our arrival, being that we made arrangements months in advance. I found this to be very disgusting, but Mayleth stressed that these are their rules, because they have issues with their drainage system and by putting the tissue in a trash bag even after having a bowel movement, wouldn’t be an issue. However, they couldn’t quite explain why the shower leaked water everywhere, it was like a pool of water the first couple of days in that room until we couldn’t take it anymore. It was a mess and Mayleth would try and come and clean the water up, but it was too much of it.
After requesting that we move, the owner Daisy became very nasty and rude, however we were ultimately moved downstairs to a much better room.

As for our driver Pavel, I guess these people were money hungry or something, because “Pavel” the driver wanted to get in on more money than what was initially agreed. Even though it clearly stated on Daisy’s web page that the driver was included, both she and the driver tried to get another $100 out both of us, stating that he was only supposed to take us to 3 doctors appts, however that was never explained to either of us prior to making arrangements. Not to mention, I asked Daisy prior to making our reservation, did her cost include a driver, and her response was yes. I had to revert her back to her own web page and prior email messages, where it clearly stated that the driver was included, and no mention of how many times to and from the doctors. Once again Daisy became very rude and nasty again. Not to mention, the driver Pavel left me in the dark by myself at the clinic on the day of my surgery at 5:30 am in the morning. I was completely terrified. Nobody arrived at the clinic until around 6am it was horrific. I couldn’t believe that he did that. The only thing I could do is pray and text my friend, who was in disbelief, and try and call Manwell and Dr. Baez. Ultimately they didn’t arrive until after 8am. I couldn’t believe for the life of me, why they wanted me there so early, that was crazy.

The day of surgery, I requested a nurse in which Daisy told me that it would $50 for 12 hours or $100 for 24 hours. Therefore I told her that I only needed the nurse for 12 hours being that I would be discharged the following morning, and that she can come the evening after my surgery, which Daisy said would be fine. However, that wasn’t the case, the nurse requested that I pay her $100 since she got there earlier that day, even though I didn’t see her to that evening. Although I told her my agreement with Daisy, she was adamant that she get paid $100. After calling Daisy, who already had an attitude, regarding the situation. Her only response was just pay her what she asked her. Just completely disregard my initial request. I was in total disbelief at that point, therefore I just went on head and paid her to avoid any further confusion. The same thing happened to my friend. Not to mention, although Dr. Baez assistant Manwell told her that he wanted her to rub burn cream on my body every hour, she slept more than I did. She ultimately rubbed the cream on twice, and those 2 times I had to wake her up to do that. After mentioning this to Daisy, once again she became very rude and and told me don’t ever call her again with anymore problems and to now only deal with her partner Jesus. Unbelievable!

Also remember how I mentioned that Mayleth said that it wouldn’t be an issue to put the tissue in the trash, well after doing so she became very rude and nasty towards us, and had a real bad attitude. Therefore we immediately stopped.

Also the food was a hit or miss. Some days it was good and other days not so good. I ultimately paid Pavel extra money to take me to the grocery store, even though it was literally less than 2 min away, he still wanted a fee for everything now.

Lena was the best. She had an awesome attitude the entire time, even when we were really feeling bad she kept our spirits up. Overall she was the best. At the end we ultimately tipped both her $100 and tipped the other girl that didn’t speak much English. However she was still nice, therefore she got a tip as well. At the beginning we were going to give them each a tip depending on their attitude and treatment towards us. They had no idea and we wanted to see them for how they really were, that’s why we made no mention of it. Therefore Mayleth ultimately didn’t get a tip, because attitude was the worse, and the fourth girl would’ve gotten a tip as well, but she wasn’t there our last couple of days. Mayleth started out very nice, but ultimately her attitude changed towards for whatever reason.

The beginning of my journey

Well hear it goes. Both my friend and I arrived in the Dominican Republic on January 15. Upon arriving in the DR we were met with our driver Pavel, from Daisy’s Recovery House. Pavel then took us over to Dr. Baez’s office, where we met her assistant Manwell. He told us that we couldn’t meet Dr. Baez that day because she was in surgery. Which was a shock to the both of us, because we were originally told that she didn’t do surgeries on Monday’s prior to making our initial appointments. Manwell said that we would be able to talk to Dr. Baez prior to our surgeries to explain to her in detail of our desires. However, that wasn’t the case, we didn’t actually talk to her until literally minutes before our surgery. In addition, both of our surgeries were ultimately postponed a day after our initial dates, because we were told that we needed additional clearance from their doctors in the D.R., although we had already obtained medical clearance from our doctors in the U.S. We felt the entire thing was about paying extra money and delaying time. For reasons that we met other patients which stated that they had already booked surgeries on the very dates that we did. Her assistant Manwell stated that since I mentioned that I had gestational diabetics during his initial questionnaire, I needed to see their endocrinologist, although I had already obtained clearance from my own. Which couldn’t happen until the following day, further postponing my surgery date. Then I was told that I would have to pay him $50 to only tell me that I was fine. Later I found out that the endocrinologist was Dr. Baez’s husband. In addition, my friend was told that her blood pressure was slightly elevated, where she had to go and spend $60 the following day to another clinic to obtain clearance. Again further postponing her surgery date as well. The whole ordeal was exhausting and to be honest unnecessary.
