I will be 57 this summer. I'm currently scheduled for the sleeve surgery on 5/31/16. I was always fairly slender until I had kids (3 kids are now grown). Also, after having my thyroid removed, a hysterectomy and quitting smoking, my weight has skyrocketed! My highest weight was 293! I almost fainted when I saw the scale (currently 278) ! I also suffer with joint pain, GERD, sleep apnea and hypertension. I got married 5 years ago and have gained almost 100 lbs since then! I'm tired of being tethered to a CPAP machine (even when I nap/doze) and want my life back. When I think of getting my "stomach stapled" I get really nervous, but I want to live a longer, healthier life so I can watch my grandkids grow up (I have 8)! So glad I have this forum to document my WLS journey. Currently going thru pre-op tests and my psych eval in a couple of days. On your mark, get set, GO!!!

Oh my gosh suga renique, we are the same age, I was the same weight when I started and my son lives in CO. I had mine done a year ago in Jan. and it was the best thing I ever did. Don't get me wrong I have to watch every single thing that goes in my mouth. But I would not change it for the world. The surgery is not near as bad as it sounds. You will do great, don't be scared!!!

I had my Sleve done on May 30th 2015 and have lost over 50 lbs...I had been slender all my life and have a story similar to you...My highest weight was 200 lbs and surgery weight 184...I've had two spinal fusions an am now only 5'1 1/2"...I would still like to lose about 20lbs...I carry most of my weight around my middle which really irks me because I had a 22" waist...By the way I am now 73 years old, but I will continue to perserve...

Thyroid supplements after VSG

I finished all my pre-op qualifying tests yesterday! YAY! All paperwork submitted and now just waiting for approval by insurance...tick tick tick. I currently take thyroid meds and wonder how my sleeve will react to the thyroid medication? Also wondering about over-the-counter meds after surgery. Just wondering...

Well, I finished getting my pre-op clearance from my PCP and my surgeon has now submitted all the insurance paperwork. My insurance company says I should have my approval by the end of next week! YAY! So....my surgeon went ahead and moved up my surgery date by 2 weeks - eek!! I'm now getting sleeved on 5/16 instead of 5/31! I'm ready and I know that God will keep me during the coming days, pre- and post- operation. I've started sipping water all day to get ready and will be having my last alcoholic beverage this weekend. On your mark, get set, GO!!!

Since I'm being very covert about informing folks I know about my "decision", I don't expect to post any pictures until after the surgery.

I take two kinds of thyroid due to having Hashimotos Thyroidosis and I just wanted to let you know that I had VSG surgery in December 2013 and I don't believe the surgery or resulting (125 lbs) wight loss had any effect on my thyroid status. I do have blood work done several times a year to monitor things but my health has only improved. I hope this helps ease your mind on this subject.

You're doing so very well. I celebrate your successes; Current and future. You've lost so much already, and I'm so pleased and grateful for your sake!!! Please, just remember that when those inevitable weight loss plateaus occur ... Please, don't let them throw you or allow you to become discouraged. It's all part of the process.

Wishing all success and blessings for you!

Warmly,

Kelly

It's Getting Closer - New Surgery Date: May 24, 2016

Well, after some complications my sleeve date had to be rescheduled. I am now convinced more than ever that this is the right decision for me. My hypertension got so high about 10 days ago, my doctor thinks I had a mini stroke (no permanent damage Thank God)!!! I'm getting really excited that its almost here! Anyone have any suggestions on a tasty protein shake I could buy for my pre-op and after sleeve care?

Premier Protein, comes in a 4pack at Wal-mart. They are a little costly but the chocolate ones are the best.

Well alrighty then! I will be sure to buy some. Thanks Mom1976...

I agree, the Premier Protein chocolate are the best! But you can get them by the case at Costco for around $25-30, give or take. I think there are 18 in the case, vs the Walmart 4-pack. Much cheaper! I like mine really cold.

That's right $24.99 at Costco and sometimes you get a $5 coupon! I've only tried Vanilla, I have to try Chocolate!
