Can Breathe, Huge Increase in Quality of Life
I've never been able to breathe through my nose...
I've never been able to breathe through my nose very well due to a deviated septum (and apparently issues w/ turbinates?). I also had a slightly (but visibly) crooked nose that I didn't really even notice until after surgery. I also had 2-3 major sinus infections per year, terrible allergies, near daily bloody noses, missing days from work, and also near constant annoyance of nasal congestion which led to a bad habit of nosepicking and anxiety.
Being able to breathe well through my nose unlocks an absurd amount of benefit for me in terms of quality of life above and beyond better breathing and better sleep. I have moderate untreated anxiety and focus/concentration issues in general and I meditate to treat them as opposed to dangerous medication. Breathing issues had always interfered w/ meditation and no longer do. I've been able to regulate my mood through regulating my breathing patterns since getting the splints out; I am a zen master now! I woke up w/ an anxiety attack 2 days after getting my splints out and was able to meditate and fall back to sleep where normally that would have led to me sweating a gallon and having insomnia and having debilitating daytime sleepiness and anxiety over the next 24-48 hours. That to me is a huge benefit, far beyond the breathing itself. I also am training myself not to gape when I walk (I was self conscious about this when I was younger). I also am an independent musician and my voice sounds less nasally - I will practically need to relearn how to sing but I can imagine after I retrain my voice I will sound much better.
Update (for some reason did not post in my initial review)
The procedure went smoothly and I spoke briefly w/ Dr. Imola before he ran off to another surgery. My girlfriend and I had some unanswered questions that weren't covered by the post op instructions or Imola and were left questioning the bedside manner, but Imola prescribed me more anti-anxiety meds and called me after hours the day of surgery and answered them. It was hard to get a response from the staff in the weeks and months leading up to surgery, but during the weeks of recovery my calls were serviced right away or responded to within 10 minutes, very impressed with that.
Communication hiccups aside, results are really the *only* thing I care about, and they are spectacular enough to warrant a 5 star review. After the splints were taken out the breathing through my nose was 400%-500% what it was before surgery and while it has decreased due to inflammation (which should go down in the upcoming weeks/months) it is still far better than at any point in my entire life. I was told my nose wouldn't visibly change but it is straight now. For 2 weeks after the procedure I looked in the mirror and though "oh no! it is crooked!" only to realize it is actually straight and had been crooked my whole life from looking at old pictures. I was never insecure about the appearance of my nose but I'm sure as hell not going to complain about it getting straightened.
