I was the "model" for a demonstration procedure at...

I was the "model" for a demonstration procedure at a Medical Spa that was considering laser services. Prior to performing the procedure, the sales representative said to me "I assume this is a tan?" referring to the color of my skin. I responded that it was tan, that I tan easily, and that I had been in the sun that morning with sunblock on. He proceeded with the treatment and the results were second degree burns. Immediately post the rep claimed the purple color called "purpura" was normal and the burning sensation would subside within the hour. He carried on throughout the evening that I would get a great result, these were not burns, and I could speak to a clinical nurse for validation of my concerns. I work in the aesthetic industry and I am highly aware that this was not a normal outcome, the protocols were not followed, and this is the result. No forms were signed, no contraindications discussed, and no accountability was taken.

The burned areas are now hypopigmented and potentially permanently scarred in several areas. My chest can not receive any sun exposure, and sun block must be worn at all times. Corrective treatment has not been determined but will be long term and extremely costly.

Laser Sales Representative

Laser manufacturers use a "CYA" tactic that includes claiming they do not fire the laser and they do not formally invite attendees to participate in the demonstrations. If there is an adverse event the blame can then be placed on the business or physician practice that requested the demo. The sales representative for this laser company was negligent and I was not treated as a patient. He was the only professional in the room that was assumed and expected to know what was appropriate for IPL with his device. Contraindications for IPL were not discussed, the protocols in their own Operatons Manual were not followed, and no disclosure or treatment waivers were disclosed or signed.
