Provider Review
I was very disappointed with my consultation with Dr. Bateman. I scheduled my consultation four months ago and was very excited to get scheduled for top surgery (FTM bilateral mastectomy). His office staff was nice enough, but I was kept waiting 35 minutes past my appointment time. As soon as he came in, Dr. Bateman told me that I would have to lose 40 pounds to reach an arbitrary BMI before he would clear me for surgery. I was not even allowed to schedule a surgery date unless I met the BMI criteria. I should note that while I am overweight, I am also a former firefighter and weightlifter who has a lot of muscle and am in good health overall. If Dr. Bateman had displayed any empathy or consideration towards me during the consultation, the BMI would not have been an issue. I would have worked hard and come back in a few months for another consult after losing the weight. However, the rest of the consult gave me serious trepidation about moving forward with choosing him as a surgical provider. I simply have never been treated like this by a medical professional, ever: Dr. Bateman had an overly casual bedside manner, including using inappropriate language during my consultation. I do not use that kind of language, much less in a professional setting. Called me a “cis female” (I am a transgender man) to my face when he was describing why he would require me to have a mammogram, even though I am too young for mammograms and I have dense fibrocystic tissue and they aren’t going to be able to see anything on the mammogram. Told me it was “bulls***” that wearing a chest binder could cause serious injury to my lungs when I expressed concern about being denied surgery and tried to explain that this is not an elective procedure for me. Told me that I wouldn’t have sleep apnea if I would lose some weight (my AHI is 71 and I have had sleep apnea since childhood, including when I had a BMI of 18). Forced me to undergo a humiliating breast exam, even though he would not allow me to schedule a surgery date. Would not show me any photographs of his surgical results. I am seriously, seriously angry that I waited 4 months for this consult. I am sorry that I wasted my time and I think there are other providers who are more respectful to us and our community that I would rather give my hard-earned dollars to.
