When I gave birth to my son, I developed a slight rectocele. Fifteen years later, I got bronchitis and coughed a lot. The rectocele worsened significantly, and surgery was recommended by everybody that I saw. The idea of surgery on this emotionally vulnerable part of my body was scary for me because I have a history of assault. I experienced date [RS bleep] when I was sixteen and had gotten too drunk, and that experience shaped or informed every interaction subsequently. The idea of letting a surgeon--especially if it was a man--put me under anaesthesia and then cut into my vaginal wall was highly triggering. However I was told by an amazing physical therapist that I was seeing (a woman I trusted highly) that Dr. Oscar Aguirre was the best person for my procedure. She said that she saw many people who had posterior repair surgeries, and Dr. Aguirre's results were consistently the best. He did the best surgical repairs she saw and he also created the fewest post-surgical complications. He also did the best job of consistently making sure the work he did allowed for optimum sexual experiences afterward. For me, getting this surgery was about having another chance. Another chance at a fulfilling relationship, another chance to get to know my body better, another chance to make sure I took good care of myself. I told Dr. Aguirre that I'd experienced assault. He asked no further questions but he made clear to me that he understood completely both the nature of my experience and why it would make it difficult for someone like me to voluntarily undergo this procedure. He had a wonderful bedside manner. From that point forward, I felt I was in good hands. Not only did Dr. Aguirre do the posterior repair, he also made certain that the vaginal opening he recreated in the process was smaller and tighter (but not too small or too tight) than it had been. Essentially, he gave me the vagina of a woman who hadn't given birth--while he was fixing my issues with bowel movements due to the rectocele. The technical term for this is vaginal rejuvenation, which he did in addition to the posterior repair. I know that the care he took has ensured that I will have the best possible sexual experiences going forward. The surgery went perfectly, I experienced little to no pain due to Dr. Aguirre's excellent pain management regimen, and I actually think making certain to see someone as thoughtful and kind and skilled as Dr. Aguirre and having such a positive outcome has been healing on a number of levels. I can't recommend Dr. Aguirre highly enough. He's terrific at what he does.
