Not to Be Trusted
14 month ago I wrote a 5 star review for Dr. Valenzuela and the group. I mentioned how my personal friend, Dr Campos, a dentist in Texas had pleaded for me not to go to Mexico for a dental implant. He told me that they are not to be trusted but I followed my instincts and the results of my research and went ahead with the implant and at the end, I felt that my entire experience was a success, a 5 star success.
Update: One year later, while getting a cleaning at the UT health science center dental school in. San Antonio, Texas, a periodontal student told me that from looking at my tooth (implant tooth done by Dr Valenzuela) I had bone loss and the implant had gone bad. She wanted me to schedule an appointment to get the implant extracted and ultimately redone. I felt no negative signs in that area so I was skeptical. I sent the picture to my friend Dr Campos and he concurred that it was implantitis (failing implant). Since Dr Campos had been negative from the beginning and that I wasn’t sure if I should trust the judgment of a dental school student, I decided to go to Dr Valenzuela himself and see what he had to say.
Dr Valenzuela looked at the new full scan from his office and after looking at the pictures and the picture that I had on my phone from the dental school he quickly determined that there was nothing wrong. He attempted to point out the area of the bone loss and said there was no bone loss at all and said it absolutely normal. I detected a bit of deception in his voice but didn’t question it. I wanted to trust him. In April (14 months later) the area was feeling a bit strange so I decided to have a 3rd opinion by a respected dentist Mint Hill NC (Dr Morris). Dr Morris took scans and exrays and told me that first of all Dr Valenzuela did a pretty nice job but there was absolutely bone loss and the implant either needed to get extracted or I needed for a periodontist to add bone to the area. He referred me to a NC periodontist (Dr D’Silva) in Matthews NC. In May (15 months from date of implant) Dr D’Silva also said the implant was a pretty nice job but the bone loss was obvious and the implant was placed at an angle that prevented a laser injection so the implant would need to get removed. Last week, I had it removed by Dr D’Silva who said the bone loss was on one side of the tooth. He said maybe 50% bone loss overall. He added bone and we’ll take it from there.
My huge issue is not about a bad implant job but Dr Valenzuela. The US dentists even said that Dr V did a pretty nice job. My issue is about honesty. Everyone that knew how to read an exray or scan, could easily see that there was a bone loss issue. Medical honesty regarding diagnosis is more important than medical skills. Dr Campos tells me that’s why he didn’t want me to go to Mexico. He says medical professionals there may very well be skilled but don’t have to follow rules and often take shortcuts. Sadly, in my case, it seems they had no problem lying to me. They are not about building patient relationships so they don’t care. It’s just a quick work factory
