Gross Intermittent Swelling Post Tear Trough Injection

I have had a horrible experience after the injection of Restylane Silk under my eyes in my rear trough. Unfortunately my injector, a local dermatologist, has met my crisis with nastiness, defensiveness and anger, and has been no assistance in helping me figure out what to do to resolve this.
I am just about 3 months past injection. The first injection hit a vein, which created a massive blood bruise, which has yet to go away, it's fading slightly, but looks like I was hit in the face with a bat! Other than the massive bruise, I was quite pleased for the first week after injection. As I neared the second week, my under eyes began blowing up with fluid bags. The gross swelling was present for about 6-8 weeks and then appeared to be subsiding. However, about 2-3 times a week I wake up in the morning with one or both of my eyes nearly swollen shut! At first it seemed to affect the level of swelling when I use my nightly cream regimine and it was explained to me by. Nurse practitioner that injects, that Restylane absorbs like a sponge so that the more products I used on my face, the worse I would swell. I stopped all! Strangest thing in the world, which I can't figure out, my swelling seems massive the day after I eat any kind of spaghetti! Not sauce, not salt, spaghetti
I am beside myself, afraid to have it dissolved that I will end up worse! Between the bruise that still exists, the massive fluid filled lumps under my eyes, I can't believe what I've done to myself, all the while chose a doctor who washed his hands of my situation and therefore no assistance in helping me resolve! My gut reaction is that I was grossly over-corrected! But I have no idea why this happened, I have no allergies, don't tend to have bad reactions to anything! If this was rejection, allergic reaction or infection, why do I have such intermittent days where it swells enough to obscure my vision? I would think any of those factors would remain consistent! Would so appreciate any advice from anyone who has had the same reaction!
Please let me say, I had NO bags under my eyes prior to this procedure and only minimal hollows for my age. My doctor suggested this procedure while I was there to have Botox injection in my forehead, and remarked that he "would take 10 years off my age" by injecting my tear troughs, because he thought I was beginning to hollow under my eyes! I never had bags, dark circles and had only minimal hollowing beginning if any!
Just a note, I called the company who produces Restylane, they took report, but other than that, they could not have appeared to care less! No help, no suggestion, just told me to consult with my doctor!

I had Restylane Silk (at the time, it was called Emervel Lips), injected under my eyes about a year ago. From the beginning it looked sore and uneven (it still has not fully dissipated). What is worse is that where it has gone away, it has left atrophy like dents or scars which I have been told by another dermatologist might be permanent. I am going to wait another few months until all the Emervel has hopefully completely gone and then get another type of filler to try and improve the scarring I have been left with. I didn't even return to the dermatologist that injected the Emervel because I wouldn't trust any fix he might offer. I know another dermatologist who takes her time and hopefully will be able to improve the mess the derm who injected this garbage has made.

Yes, it is hard to determine when to try to fix, as opposed to waiting out the product dissipation. I have seen already three very experienced professionals and ALL warn that the "fix" might obtain worse results than I have now. The best advice I did receive was to approach any "fix" in tiny small increments, so to ascertain what effect I am seeing a bit at a time, before doing any further damage. I have read many notes on this site that this type of intermittent swelling, gross swelling, can be indicative of Bio Film infection. Very scary for a procedure I thought was "no big deal". I wish you luck with your fix, but highly recommend little by little as you can judge the result you are getting. Good Luck!!

In my non-expert opinion, I would highly recommend that you let the product dissipate on its own. Many doctors will say that having the product dissolved by hyaluronidase cannot do any damage to the skin or surrounding tissue but I simply don't believe it. I have read many stories and seen pictures on RealSelf to the contrary. Patience is hard but it's better than creating another problem. Best of luck.

I agree and have taken the stance once the first... However, the thought of infection possibility scares me worse! No longer concerned about looks, I'm scared for my health. I have heard horror stories also about Hyaluronidase, that it dissolves even natural HA but just want to know I have no infection. Thank you so very much for your words of wisdom, they are most appreciated! This whole site Hansen wonderful as I've felt quite alone before, dealing with this!

That looks like it is very annoying! I just had my tear troughs done with plain Restylane nearly a week ago and am hoping the bruising and asymmetry straighten out. I think you should have the stuff dissolved. This could go on for months or more and it can't be easy to deal with. Maybe seeing a second doctor experienced in this area of the face would be the best bet. I don't think I would be able to stand the swelling. It's amazing how some people have perfect results while others have so many issues. I am one who has some issues but usually not awful ones. Just ugly ones. Good luck in whatever you do. I think a second opinion by a more experienced doctor is really in order.

Yes, thanks for your feedback, actually, my swelling has gotten SO bad, I have decided to begin the process of removal. It seems to come, and come with a vengeance, with no particular rhyme or reason.....I read about this biofilm infection in tear troughs with Restylane, but actually, my injector has not released my medical records, and I am not 100% sure that what i was told, was what I got, or in what amount, so I have been very concerned to do something that would make this worse....but my fear of infection is too great, and has come way ahead of my concern for what I look like. I too have never had a bad reaction to anything injected, or correction I have done in the past. This is the first. But, I am a business owner, and have had to walk around in life, work, be in public, looking as if I had been hit by a bat in the face! I am ready to get this stuff out!! Thank you for your kind response, and I wish you luck as well!

I never thought of a bio film infection until you said that. I hope what is going on with you is not that and that they can slowly and very carefully dissolve some of the stuff. I read that steroid often help as well. I am going to have to see my doctor because I have a strange rope-like thing under one eye that looks awful and I am intermittently swelling a little and then I have indents in the area and even on my lower cheeks. I don't want to dissolve it but I do want this fixed. I look worse on one side than when I started which happened the last time too. Just a different problem. After this, I am going au naturale and let the hollows have their way. I hope you keep us posted. Best of luck.

I have feel from the beginning that its best I wait until the product dissipates, rather than the chance dissolving would make it worse, but when I read about this infection possibility, and all who have had it says the infection adheres to product and won't be cured unless I is dissolved, it changed my path. I'll keep you posted.... Hop you have good success too! I'm with you, Au natural for me too!!

I had a horrible experience as well. I had it injected under my eyes. My eyes were swollen and sore for weeks. had it desolved and I am still having complications. My eyes still swell up. They need to be sued.

I am so sorry to hear about your similar experience! I do not understand why they allow doctors to decide on their own to use a product which is not intended for this use under eyes! They say it's off-label use, but then do nothing when a doc uses it and has a problem, saying its Doctor choice! Everyone hides by passing the blame! The worst part about my experience was that I was scared, and dealing with it alone! The company, the local Reps, could not have cared less... Just kept telling me to go back to my doctor. My doctor did not call me back even once, was actually angry that I was "complaining" and did not give me the time of day! I sent my Doc a letter, enclosed nearly four months of pictures of my Eyes showing gross swelling, black and blue mark that never went away and I asked for my medical records and a refund for what I paid. I have never even gotten a response! He did not want to know ....he over- filled, used the wrong product (off label) under my eyes and worried more about his ego than how I was walking around looking like I was hit in the face! I hope you received better support! If I can make a suggestion... Put NO cream, oils or any product on your face. This Restylane Silk product eats up and holds moisture, thus the appearance of swelling! I hope this begins to improve for you!! Did you file complaint with company? They won't do a thing, and didn't seem to care... But at least they will know if the complaints keep rolling in.

I will definitely be complaining. If you have the company number, could you forward it. My eyes now make me look 10 years older. I have perminate marks under my eyes. My dr definitely overfilled them.

HI--I'd love an update on how things have gone for you over the past few years. Did you get the filler dissolved? How did it go? I'm considering getting mine dissolved due to similar problems but I'm a nervous wreck. This has been such a scary, lonely time. My injector has also written me off and I'm having a hard time finding someone who is willing to correct a mistake made by someone else.

I am so sorry for your result. I just read a similar review on RS yesterday from Qtzie....she was able to fix the problem , check out her review, this might work for you...

Wishing you the best.

Dear Bocajas,
I was wondering how your problem was progressing. The filler under my one eye has pretty much completely dissipated although it has left a dent/scar about the size of a pinky finger nail which I hope will diminish with time. However, under my under eye, I still have a pooling of filler about an inch long which I am considering having removed with hyaluronidase because I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever go away on its own. I'm also finding it difficult to find a dermatologist who's interested in helping me with this problem. I guess they don't want to get involved in a mess made by someone else.

Correction, I meant to say "under the other eye", not "under my under eye".
