After research and a consultation, I decided to go...

After research and a consultation, I decided to go to a top rated facial plastic surgeon for Voluma injections at my cheek bones and tear duct area. Goal was to add volume to the apple of my cheeks which would help with loss of cheek volume, my jowls and undereye creases. I am 37 years old. I received two syringes (one on each side).

The physician punctured a blood vessel under my left eye which caused a huge bruise/hematoma. It got larger and uglier in the several days following the injections. My face/cheek areas also swelled quite a bit.

I am now Day 16. Most of the surface bruising is gone but I look deformed. My cheeks look unnaturally swollen and I can't tell if this is filler or actual swelling. I also have dark creases under the skin (maybe Tyndall effect?) I feel like I have to wear a hat, sunglasses on my regular glasses everywhere I go to hide my face. Today someone asked me if I have been in a car accident recently. I'm super sad and anxious about the entire situation right now and regretful.

I saw my dermatologist this week (for something unrelated) and she recommended I continue to stay patient and wait for swelling to go down, but I HATE the way I look right now and am feeling like I want to dissolve the filler ASAP. On the other hand, I am scared to dissolve for fear of causing more trauma to a area that is still healing, and causing even more swelling and bruising. I have read some scary reviews on here regarding hyaluronidase (the drug used to dissolve the filler) and how it seemed to cause even darker areas under the eyes and hollowness. My husband and I have an important event to go to in three weeks and I need to look presentable by then.

I am very worried and I have an appointment with the plastic surgeon on Monday to discuss a plan.

I was told Voluma is for cheeks only, NOT for under eyes. I've had it in my cheeks multiple times and did not bruise like this. I think your doctor made a mistake with filler choice.

I think he definitely did too. I am sick over this.

give it a few days as the swelling does take some time to go away. Voluma is not for the eye troughs! Some said maybe Belotero, but the best is supposed to be fat transfers. I see a PA for my face stuff he's conservative and does hundreds of them a month. Hope you can find someone like that. I wouldn't go to a PS, seems odd, but they don't do hundreds of these a month. Hope everything heals up quickly for you :-)

Thank you for the kind words.

I feel so bad for you, and I hope I can help you with some advice. I couldn't believe a doctor, let alone a so called top doctor, would put Voluma in the tear ducts! I would run don't walk to another doctor! This doctor might be a top doctor in other things like surgeries, but his expertise in fillers is very poor. If he took the time to educate himself about fillers, he would have known you never put Voluma in the tear ducts! You have been botched! Voluma is a thicker Hyaluronic Acid. That swelling is the filler, and it is not going to go away anytime soon. You need to go to another doctor, and get a Hyaluronidase injection to remove it. Your doctor will never admit his mistake, and he probably told you that it takes time for the swelling to go down. By now your swelling should have gone down, if you had it done right with the right filler. Fillers under the eyes last a long time. My doctor told me it is because there is not a lot of muscle movement there. I have been getting Restylane in my tear ducts for seven years now, and I am very happy with the results. I have only needed one touch up, which is a good thing, when it is done properly, but a bad thing if it isn't. Even with Restylane, you can get bumps and lumps, if your doctor doesn't know what he is doing. And I don't know why your doctor gave you a dental block with Voluma. Voluma has lidocaine in it. All you needed for the initial prick was some topical lidocaine. I get Voluma in my cheeks, and it is a great product for that area. Your doctor is not familiar with the different types of fillers and their purposes. Also, you might want to do a search on youtube, "filling tear duct area with restylane or fillers to see the correct way they do fillers. Bottom line, before you let any doctor do anything to your face, do your research on the product and procedures before you go to the doctor. I hope this was of some help to you, and that you will find a good doctor to have it removed, and then possible filled correctly the next time.

Thank you for your reply. I honestly didn't realize he was putting it in my tear trough. I thought we were "filling" the volume of the apples of my cheeks. In addition, I know he gave me the dental block so he could inject very deep, right on the bone, in order to prevent Tyndall effect.

I have since gone back to my plastic surgeon twice now to dissolve, but it hasn't helped much. I have dark circles under my eyes (I am assuming staining from the deep bruises) and I am still a little puffy under my left eye (the eye that had the hematoma and awful bruise)- but I could live with the puffiness, it's the darkness that is the worst thing now. My plastic surgeon tells me that I am "puzzling" to him because he went to such lengths to take precautions this type of thing doesn't happen.

This has drastically changed my life. I am depressed and I feel physically ill. I used to be a fun confident young woman and now I want to hide. I cry easily. I am devastated. Today is my one month anniversary of the day I ruined my face. :(

I meant tear trough, not tear duct. I'm sorry to hear that Hyaluronidase has not helped you. I once had a small bump from restylane in the tear trough, and had hyaluronidase injected, and I saw immediate results. I heard from a doctor that Voluma is the only Hyaluronic acid that doesn't attract water. What you see is what you get. I've never had experience with removing Voluma. Since it is thicker, maybe you need more Hyaluronidase. And a dental block is totally unnecessary. Voluma has lidocaine in it, and is always and only injected on top of bone, never superficially. I'm sure there is a doctor near you that can help you, besides the one you have. The company should be able to help you also. They advertise it's not permanent, and can be removed. You should not have to go through all this pain and suffering!
April 27, 2017
The darkness in your pictures looks dark where there is a depression. It looks like the puffiness makes the depressions look dark. Hopefully once the puffiness goes down, you won't notice the darkness.
April 27, 2017
Sorry it's late and I keep thinking of things to add to my above comments. Try this: Get the best cover up you can find and cover the darkness that is bothering you. After you do, do you still see the darkness? If yes, that is a depression, made worse by the puffiness.
April 27, 2017
Hi Carol, I appreciate you sharing any thoughts/suggestions/tips with me! I am still struggling with this. It has been 11 days since I received my second does of hyaluronidase and I am still very upset.

To answer your question, I can not hide the darkness with makeup. I agree the puffy/over-filled eye bags make the darkness even worse.

What I am doing right now to treat:
- struggling through daily panic attacks and depression
- warm compress on my eye for 10 minutes (once per day)
- Vitamin K cream 2x/day under my eyes (in case the darkness is hemosiderin staining)
- Allergy pill every day
- I reached out to a girlfriend who is in sales for Allergan (manufacturer of Voluma). She is finding me "the best injector" in Dallas so I can make an appointment with that person for a second opinion. I will also meet with my trusted dermatologist (this is not the plastic surgeon who injected me) to get her opinion on next steps.
April 27, 2017
That's great that you have a girlfriend who works for Allergan! I'm sure this can all be corrected, and you will feel better. I would be careful about compressing the filler under your eyes, however. I know by experience, the filler is very easily dented in the tear troughs from pressing on it, even a year or so after having it injected.
April 28, 2017
Oh goodness!! I didn't think of this. The plastic surgeon (who injected me) suggested I do warm compress. Maybe I will stop doing this for a bit.

One more update- I have a call tomorrow with a Registered Nurse Injector/Certified Advanced Trainer for Allergan. (My friend who works for Allergan set us up). This sweet
Nurse has been texting me today and assured me all will be fine. I am SO grateful she is going to talk with me and see me!
April 28, 2017
That is wonderful! Soon this nightmare will be behind you, I'm sure.

Who was the idiot won did this?
April 11, 2017
I meant who did this
April 13, 2017
This is the first that I've heard of Voluma being used under the eye. Interesting.
May 10, 2017
NEVER!
May 10, 2017
Also, I googled all the different injectables before I saw my Dr. Very interesting info on all of them.

Day 18

Still have darkness in my tear troughs. Maybe getting a tiny fraction better. It's hard to tell. But this is a MUCH longer healing process than I ever anticipated and I am still unhappy.

Hi! Is it getting better? Today is April 13 and I wonder if things are better!!
April 19, 2017
Hi there, thank you for checking on me. Unfortunately it is not getting better. I need to find a way to live with it for now (I am wearing my glasses every day to help hide it) and I am researching to try to form a new plan. Unfortunately, I believe the darkness I have under my eyes is from blood staining my skin from the deep bruises I had. This can be permanenet and it can also go away on its own- but takes a VERY long time (months and months). Some doctors suggest treating with a laser, but it isn't 100% proven to help, plus I am not a candidate for lasers or surgeries for a full year since I recently got off Accutane.
April 21, 2017
Have you looked into lllt (red light therapy)? It might help and it's safe after accutane (some people do it while using accutane). It accelerates healing. Google "lllt and bruising".
April 21, 2017
Thank you so much for the suggestion!
May 4, 2017
Curious how you look now? In reviewing our last pic, you look great, hope the issues resolved. I just had Voluma injections yesterday by a doctor who is a plastic surgeon, I am surprised at the discomfort, headache and hurts to touch area, but it looks really good so far and no bruising or issues like you had - at least not yet :)
May 17, 2017
Hi scalkins71, it looks about the same (NOT fixed). In perfect lighting, it looks fine. But in any interior lighting, it looks pretty bad. As crazy as it sounds, I am starting to get used to my new look. Still hate it though! I'll post an update with pictures soon!

its been a month on June 8 I did voluma both left and right cheeks everything was fine,,last May 25 I did the Nano laser peel and Fractional Resurfacing to a different dermatologist but everything turn out to be perfectly done so with the results it was worth it,,i had a previous history of Cystic Acne ;;finally my wish was granted to have a smoother skin .I will still do it again if given the chance as what they say no pain no gain ;

be careful bragging about your great results to a person who is suffering with her result. seems like you could draw bad karma to yourself

I've thought of you a great deal this past week. I'm glad to hear that things are getting better, and I understand you're not being happy. Are you still depressed? I know I am. Never thought in a million years that going in for something said to be so simple and that could be reversed ( which truthfully) it cannot would be life changing but for the both of us it has been.
April 18, 2018
Fillers under the eyes should always be done using a cannula to prevent blood vessel punctures.

I don’t voluma is meant for under eye bags i think it’s more cheek lift in my experience

Day 18- dark creases under eyes, looks like football player eyeblack

qtzie
Dark creases under my eyes are still present. It looks like I have put my son's eyeblack on underneath my eyes and couldn't run it off completely. I also have puffiness/swelling "bags" under my eyes now which probably makes the dark appearance even more pronounced. Worried this is Tyndall effect. I will ask my doctor tomorrow at my appointment. Leaning towards dissolving this stuff and getting it out of my face- this was NOT the look I was after.

Thank you for reading and commenting! The mental journey is the hardest part for me and I feel better knowing someone out there cares to read and reply. <3
April 11, 2017
I recently had fillers and am not 100% happy with the placement, It looks uneven. My choice is to either spend more money and get more or wait to have a lower face lift with a fat transfer. The problem is my husband thinks I'm fine the way I am and is not on board. I'm 52, had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago and I'm losing skin elasticity and I don't want to wait until my skin thins out. So there is real temptation to get more filler although I know it is a short term and a waste of money. I'm the happiest I've been in my life and I want to look like I feel. Keep me posted.
April 19, 2017
I'm sorry you are unhappy with the unevenness, but I'm glad you are happy with where you are at in your life. Pros and Cons to all risky situations for sure!
April 10, 2017
I am so sorry you are going through this! I had 2 syringes of Voluma placed in my cheeks 11 days ago. I think I still have some slight swelling....I had minimal bruising which is yellowish in color now. I agree with you about the mental journey...my experience has caused a lot of anxiety...I worry about everything anyway!
I wanted to share a couple things with you...
1. There is a laser that can help eliminate bruising quickly..might be worth asking about.
2. A close friend of mine had a bad experience with Juvederm in her tear troughs and was unhappy with the results and eventually ended up getting it dissolved and she did fine...looked just like she did before filler.
Keep us posted on what your doctor has to say. I hope its OK with you...I will say a prayer for your situation.
April 10, 2017
Thank you so much for your response! You give me some hope! Unfortunately I am not a candidate for any type of laser or cosmetic surgery until April 2017 because I have been on accutane the past nine months (just stopped a week ago). You aren't allowed to do any type of laser or elective surgery for a full year after stopping that medication due to dangers of healing and scarring. This is another reason why I am so nervous.

Glad you're getting better. You might consider checking the Brilliant Distinctions website, Yelp, Google reviews, Angie's List, etc., and just asking around. I learned of mine from my hairdresser. She gets the scoop on who's good, etc. Go for a few more consultations.

Thank you again for your reply. I didn't know about the Brilliant Distinctions website but I am checking it out now for research!
