I was ashamed of my droopy DD breasts, my neck and...

I was ashamed of my droopy DD breasts, my neck and back hurt, and a comfortable bra did not exist. After exhaustive research, I selected Dr. Richardo Meade to perform breast reduction surgery. This was the best decision I ever made, both to have the surgery, and to have Dr. Meade to do it.

It took several months to actually get the consultation and schedule surgery because Dr. Meade is in such high demand. However, he was worth waiting for.

My initial consultation went well. I was made to feel very comfortable, and Dr. Meade patiently answered all my questions and took a great deal of time with me. I wanted to go as "small" as possible, so he gave me the option of a procedure called the "free nipple graft" or FNG. In most reductions, there is only so much that can be removed without endangering the blood supply to the nipple. With a FNG however, the nipple is simply removed and then sewn back on after all the breast tissue is removed. This enables a much larger reduction, and that was my choice.

I was then taken to a private office to discuss the financial aspect with the business manager. I was self pay because my insurance would not cover it, and they did discount for that. There were no "estimates", but a written disclosure of all costs. Again, I was treated like royalty.

As the time grew closer for the surgery, I was called several times by the nurses and staff to ask if I had any questions, and to reassure me that all would be well. It astonished me that they took this time to contact me!

When it was finally time for the surgery, I was taken to the surgical suite on the same floor as Dr. Meade's office. Again, the surgical team, techs, nurses, and everyone I came into contact with made me feel as though they had nothing in the world better to do than to look after me. Everyone was so patient and kind! I changed into the hospital gown and was taken to surgery. Although I was excited and not frightened at all, one of the nurses sat and gently stroked my arm as the anesthesia was administered; very comforting and such a thoughtful thing to do. It really touched me.

The next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room. I did not have any tight dressings (just a loose sports bra) and did not have any stitches since surgical glue was used to close the wounds. It all actually looked pretty great! About 4 1/2 pounds of tissue was removed, which took me from a droopy DD to a perky C. The only thing that I didn't like was that the nipple grafts were secured with a thick dressing which was sewn onto the skin. While it didn't hurt at all, it looked rather weird.

A few hours later, I went home. It was an easy trip without incident or pain, and I walked into my home without assistance. I did sleep most of that day. The next day, I was able to take a bath. No showers because I couldn't get the nipple dressings wet. I couldn't lift my arms without some pain, but if I didn't lift the arms, I had almost no pain. I only took pain meds for 2 days. Within 3 days, I could lift my arms just fine and felt as though I could go about my business. Within 6 days, I drove myself to a baby shower about an hour away, and felt that I could have done so even sooner.

I healed fast, and at the 10 day point, the nipple dressings were removed. Again, they did not hurt, but they didn't look pretty and could not get wet. That was a joy to have them off!

Overall, it was an easy procedure for me. I experienced little pain, and only a few days of down time. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I look better in my clothes, feel better, and was able to buy a COMFORTABLE bra right off the rack at Walmart for about $7. No more horrible bras that cut me in half, straps that dig into my shoulders, and misery.

I did have one complication, which I expected, and that is the development of thick, raised scar tissue called "keloids". This is not the fault of Dr. Meade in any way, but is just something that my body does. Dr. Meade treated this scar tissue with Kenalog injections over a period of a few months, and things are looking pretty good now. Here is the most amazing part of this story: he did not charge me one penny extra for this treatment. The extra time that he took with me to do this was an example of his great kindness.

I wish I could remember the names of all the staff that worked with me, but every single nurse, assistant, tech, office staff, and person that I dealt with were absolutely top notch.

If I had to do it all over, I would. . . . . and I would choose Dr. Richardo Meade.
