My Experience - Costa Rica

I felt a responsibility to report back to this...

I felt a responsibility to report back to this site after my face lift so that I might provide feedback to others. I have been helped by so many others in the past.
My story is a bit different.
I had 10 - 12 consults over a 2 year period. I flew to and personally met with, every surgeon I was seriously considering. I felt this was just part of the cost of my surgery. By the time I left each consultation, I knew whether or not that surgeon was the one for me. Beside personal consults in California, I flew to Tijuana, Guadalajara, and Costa Rica.
I had facelift surgery on October 18, 2012 with Dr. Lev in San Jose, Costa Rica. I had a previous facelift and upper eyelid lift about 15 years ago, but my surgeon retired. Dr. Lev felt the skin on my upper lid was too thin to have another upper eyelid lift. We talked about other options, but, at the time, I opted for a facelift only. I was also concerned about the bags on my upper cheeks. Several surgeons in California said an additional procedure of pulling my skin laterally would work, but there seems to be no consensus on this. I am still searching for a solution.
I don’t hear much about the anesthesiologists. Mine was fantastic. I have had several medical surgeries in California, so I feel I had a basis for comparison.
I never read anything negative about Dr. Lev, so I was curious when I went for my consultation. I found him to be skilled, kind, and a very experienced surgeon. He cares about his patients. He is accessible, available, and treated me like I was a valued and important patient and person. No question or concern was too small for him to provide a thoughtful response. After about 4 or 5 days, I called him, as a few of my stitches were bothering me. Dr. Lev told me to come right over, and he fixed it. After my surgery, I was out and about in a few days. I even had some dental work done that I didn’t feel I would be up to having.
Here are some points I want to make. Please contact me through this site if you have any questions. Again, I want to be as helpful to others as others have been to me.
1. Dr. Lev was the best surgeon for me.
2. I was very apprehensive about having my surgery in another country, but the prices in the U.S. were way out of my budget range.
3. I dealt with Dr. Lev directly. I initially communicated with his medical coordinator, but I had some concerns, and then dealt with him directly.
4. When I went for my dental work at the dental office, I had so many requests for his contact information that I asked him what information I could give out. If you need his email address please PM me.
5. Villa Le Mas after Care Facility, San Antonio de Escazu was a nightmare. Petra is not what she seems, and I heard several times that some of the reviews are not from people who stayed there. My plane arrived at 10:30 p.m., but I didn’t get picked up from the airport until 1 a.m. I had to leave for my surgery at 7 a.m. Even though I provided information twice, she sent the taxi to the wrong surgery facility in the morning. I was 1 ½ hours late for my own surgery. She just blew it off. There was not enough to eat. It is out in the middle of nowhere. The nearest store or transportation is miles away. There is no phone service there, so my cell was useless. She would barge into my room at any time of the day or night. After the second time she came in while I was sitting on the toilet, I asked her to knock first. They have animals that smell so badly that it permeates the entire place. One cat bit me when I shooed it away after it jumped on the table and started eating my meal. I verified ahead of time that they could accommodate a tomato allergy, but I regularly received meals with tomatoes. When I mentioned it, I was told the slice of tomato wasn’t a tomato, and the red spaghetti sauce didn’t have tomatoes in it. I never received a replacement, so I didn’t eat every time this happened. The shower stall was cement blocks. There were bugs flying and crawling everywhere. The television was about 12 inches wide, and often didn’t work. The plug was so far away that I could barely see the tv when it did work. Many nights it was very cold. When I asked for a blanket, I was told to just put on my jacket.
They advertise heavily in the U.S. No one I spoke with in San Jose even heard of this place. So many things happened. One of the biggest is an $800 overcharge. I am currently working with the police and owners on this. Finally, at one point, I started feeling a bit apprehensive and fearful, and had a friend’s personal driver take me away practically in the middle of the night.
6. I then stayed at the Apartotel Le Sabana and loved it. It is only a few miles from Dr. Lev’s office and was almost half the price of Villa le Mas. I met several people who had been returning there for years. Apartotel Le Sabana has a wonderful breakfast each morning. They even brought me chicken soup, yogurt and tea each afternoon.
7. Apartotel Suites Christina is a few blocks from Apartotel Le Sabana. I walked over there one day, and it was also great. The Christina has kitchenettes, which is helpful.
8. I spoke with the front desk clerk at each place. Even though they are not recovery places, each said they often have cosmetic surgery patients (with bandages) stay with them. Check with your surgeon to see if either is an option for you.
9. I hope this information has been helpful.

Thank you so much for your comprehensive report. I actually had a consultation with Dr. Lev a few years ago. I really liked him and would definitely trust him as a surgeon. I also attended a luncheon where past patients of Dr. Lev's shared their plastic surgery stories.
My issue with Dr. Lev is that he does not do any fat transfer and I really need some fat injected into the corners of my mouth and my lower eyelids due to fat loss from a previous lower eyelift. Also, he said that he only does the full coronal brow/forhead lift and this method seems quite invasive., but quite effective.
What specific procedures did you have? What was your total surgery price and did you have the surgery at CIMA hospital or in the lower price clinic?
Your post op photos look amazing! Would love to see more. Very sorry to hear of your negative experiences with Villa le Mas.
Again, thank you for sharing your experiences!!!

Hi Bunnyman,
Thanks for your comments. There are procedures Dr. Lev doesn't do. Luckily, he did the procedure I wanted. He also does a direct brow lift, which is an incision right above the eyebrow, but I thought there might be scarring that couldn't be hidden. I also thought the full coronal brow/forehead lift was too invasive, so I didn't do either. I had a facelift only in the clinic for $4500. Again, I dealt only with Dr. Lev, which made quite a difference.

I was trying to have deal with dr Lev directly, but he did not want to be involved in any business without Didi

Hi Secrets,
Thanks so much. I am 66 years old.
I think it is important to get the word out when there are good experiences as well as when there are bad experiences. Hopefully, by both you and me providing feedback about how bad Villa Le Mas was, it might save someone else from such a horrible experience.

Good gracious !
You really do look wonderful....methinks i might have to pay your doctor a visit.?

Hi EasyGoinGal!
Glad your surgery went well. You look great! I was between Dr Lev and Dr Cardenas. They both researched liked skilled surgeons and both would be good. I went to Dr C because he was closer to home and that made me feel better.
I am surprised about the villas las mas. I noticed their website is shut down. The mess with them and pino is scary. I stayed at the Rejuvinate In Mexico home. The woman that works there is Cecilia. She doesn't speak any english, but is the sweetest person. She put out a breakfast of about 10 choices of cereal, donuts, coffee and juice. Then set out a big lunch around 2pm. It was wierd though. Maybe the surgery? I was starving all the time (very unlike my normal) Evening was usually light and a soup with bread or something.
I had brought along some snacks. Like candies and chips and such which came in handy.
The thing I needed worst were little things. Like compress for my eyes. They didn't have washclothes...just hand towells in the bathrooms. My eyes were burning terrible and could not close. The towells were too heavy and so I tried paper towells, toilet paper, etc. Bring your own if you go!
They had all the tech stuff. Wi-Fi, Movies, Netflix, free phone calls. No worries there.
The showers were tricky. They would boil or freeze you in an instant. That took some getting used to.
All in all. I think I made a good choice. I still have the puffs under my eyes. Like a black eye problem, but I believe that is from my very thin skin. I finally am starting to look human again. (almost) Will be awhile yet until I know for sure if it was all worth it or not.
God Bless and good wishes to you. Thanks for sharing

Hi annie101,
Thanks for sharing your information. I flew to Guadalajara to have a personal consult with Dr. Cardenas. I thought he was a very skilled surgeon. The "before' and "after" photos of his surgeries were stunning. I bet you look great. It sounds like Rejuvinate was a good place to stay.
I didn't hear about Villa Le Mas and Pino. I did go back to Trip Adviser to see if Villa Le Mas was still on their website and saw that Villa Le Mas recovery center is now Villa Le Mas vacation rentals. Maybe that is why their website was down. I doubt Villa Le Mas will be any more successful as a vacation rental than they were as a recovery center.
Thanks for your good wishes.

Easy GoinGal, You really look great. Your "before" pic reminds me a lot of how I look now. I have a couple of questions for you:
1) Did the lift change the basic shape of your face -- I think your face looks a bit wider in the "after", perhaps? The reason I'm asking is that when I pull up my face with my hands it also looks wider, and I'm wondering if wider is part of what will happen.
2)The lines/depressions extending at the corners of your mouth in the "before" look to be gone in the "after." Is that the case? I have those lines too, but I thought a facelift doesn't help them much, but in your case it appears to have helped quite a lot. You didn't do fat transfers, right?
--The reason I'm asking these questions is your "before" shows so many of the same issues I have, that I think your result is a good example of what I can hope to expect.
Oh, and lastly, how did your recovery go as far as swelling, bruising, numbness, tightness, discomfort that so many people report -- some say they have it for up to a year -- did you have much and how long did it last?
January 9, 2013
Hi needafaceliftnow45,
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I think it did change the shape of my face a bit. I think there still might be a small amount of swelling, but I don't know for sure. I was also surprised that the results seemed to extend above my jawline. I didn't have fat transfers or any other procedure other than a facelift. Again, I don't know why, but I'm glad it turned out this way. My recovery was great. I was out in the community in 5 days. There was minimal bruising. My neck still feels a bit tight, but I'm glad for that. I am not numb. There was bruising under one eye, but there was only a bruise about 1 1/2 inches wide and maybe 1/2 inch long. Anyway, it wasn't large. I also had some small bruising on my upper chest, but the dr. said this was not uncommon. I currently have no pain or discomfort. I do have one small spot by my ear that still has scabbing by one of the stitches. It's difficult to even see, but I notice it. I hope this answers your questions.

Thanks for your response and sharing. I hope I can get that improvement above the jawline like you did--I think it is somewhat unusual to get such a good improvement in that area. You really look at least 25 years younger. Quite amazing!

Hi seesaw208
I'm sorry I didn't see your posting earlier. Dr. Lev's patient coordinator wants patients to stay at Chi Tica. Just personal preference, but I wanted to stay closer to town. After my bad experience at Villa Le Mas, I went to Apartotel Le Sabana and loved it. It is my #1 choice if I ever go back. The Christina is similar and also very nice, but the staff at Apartotel Le Sabana was just outstanding.
UPDATED FROM EasyGoinGal
Four Years After My Facelift with Dr. Lev
EasyGoinGalJune 5, 2016
I wanted to provide an update. I had my facelift with Dr. Lev in 2012. I went to my 50th high school reunion, and someone took this picture of me. I think my facelift has aged well with me. I often think of Dr. Lev and quietly thank him for his skill, kindness and expertise.
As a side comment, about 6 years ago I found I had to come out of retirement and go back to work. I had a difficult time getting a job. Shortly after my surgery, I started applying for jobs again, and have been employed ever since. I am still the same person, but I am perceived differently. I will always be grateful to Dr. Lev.

You really look great. Congratulations.

Thanks. I'll be 70 years old in a few months. I don't look 70, but I don't think I have that pulled look either. I've had nothing else done since my facelift.

You still look marvelous...and you certainly don't look 74. I'd guess your age at around 55.

I did apply to live in an over 55 apartment community. The manager carded me!!! I could have jumped over the counter and kissed him !!!!
March 18, 2021
You look fantastic! How are your incisions around your ears? Could you post a photo?
March 28, 2021
I actually don't remember where my incisions are. When I feel around my ears, I feel no scar or anything. Dr. Lev is really an expert.

You did local?

You look fabulous, EasyGoinGal! I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience at the recovery centre, but I'm glad to hear your surgery turned out great and that you're doing well now. Thanks for writing such a helpful review! :)
