CoolSculpting Gone Wrong
In late 2020, I decided to have some CoolSculpting done on my upper and lower abs and flanks to try to get rid of some stubborn fat deposits that wouldn't budge no matter how hard I dieted and worked out (regular cardio and weight training). The plastic surgeon's office where I decided to go was recommended to me by several people and had good reviews, it also was not one of those places you see advertise online or on TV where they offer steep discounts. However, the experience was not a good one at all.
First of all, they didn't mark me before placing the CS paddles, which is rule #1 when it comes to CoolSculpting. Then when they placed the paddles on my flanks, they did not place them in the correct position. One side was placed on my flank, but the other side was placed too low (on my hip). And because of the big pillow they place on top of it for your arms to rest on, I couldn't see how far off the placement was at the time (and with the extreme cold, you go numb pretty quickly and can't feel it at all). However, I became aware of this after the procedure was complete and looked in the mirror in the room because the paddles had left big red marks in the treatment areas, and the difference in height of placement was glaringly obvious. Also, each time the paddles were removed, they failed to do the proper massage (both length of time and technique), and basically just wiped down and warmed up the areas with a wet, warm wash cloth. And if you know anything about the Cool Sculpting process, you know that this can drastically diminish the results that you get by up to 60% (according to the CoolSculpting website itself). So this experience was a big fail all over the board, and I notified them of all of these issues immediately so that it would be documented.
Fast forward 3 months later, and my results were subpar to say the least, with very slight improvements at best. Not to mention that now I was starting to notice some unevenness in my left hip (where the paddle had been placed too low). I returned to the plastic surgeon's office for my recheck and let them know just how dissatisfied I was. Their "solution" was that they wanted me to agree to do two more full sessions at an additional $4,000 a piece, and then if I was still unhappy, they said that they would possibly comp me for the first round of CoolSculpting at that time. Seriously?! So I need to pay $12,000 out of pocket to a place where I've had a horrible experience to MAYBE get a refund of $4,000 if I'm lucky? Uh, no thank you. Oh yeah, and when I brought up the fact that the paddles hadn't been placed evenly and now I was seeing some unevenness in my hip, they tried to make me think I was losing my mind and said, "well, no one is perfectly symmetrical." Thanks a lot.
Long story short, there was NO WAY after the experience I'd had and after being treated they way I had been that I was going to go back or agree to let them touch me again. So after finally talking with the lead surgeon who owned the practice (not the tech who performed the CoolSculpting), she agreed to give me a 50% refund of the amount I paid ($2,000) because, although I'd had a negative experience, I agreed that I had seen some slight improvement in my stomach. I wasn't thrilled at this point, because my main issue wasnt the money. But there wasn't anything I could do about it and the hip unevenness was "that bad" and only visible to me, so I just let it go.
