After discussing all of my risk factors, family history, mammograms, Excisional biopsy, and tamoxifen, I decided to just completely eliminate any risk and have PBMX and pedicled TRAM Flap reconstruction. My breast care specialist was supportive and amazing. Right now I'm 5 weeks out and can't really say I'm satisfied with the plastic surgery part. I admit I have never really supported PS to begin with, but I was afraid of how my body would do with implants. Plus, I'd heard horrible things. Unfortunately, my TRAM flap came at a price as well. I ended up with fat and skin necrosis, in addition to wound dehiscence. I feel like I look like a freak show. My stomach looks terrible and recovery has been slowed down quite a bit by it. Perhaps a year from now I can look back on this and feel more confidence that I made the right decision, but right now I do have a few regrets. I wish I was better informed prior to this procedure. It feels like there's an elephant sitting on my chest. My belly is a wreck. At first I was entirely dependant on my husband. It's been a bit more than I had anticipated. I suppose I expected something similar to a c section or hysterectomy....not even close!

On an aside, my breast mounds do look good and give me something good to look at! I'm looking forward to having nipples again!! :-)

Hi TSepps, thank you posting. I'm sorry you're going through this, but I admire your positive and sunny attitude! You are an inspiration, truly.

How is the necrosis being treated and how long does the healing process take? What are doing for the nipple procedure?

Please keep us posted on how you're doing!

I am also having wound healing problems. Try and hang in there. I am six weeks post op from a DIEP flap bilaterally. I know that pressure on your chest feeling very well and just had my wounds worked on again yesterday. You are right in trying to look to a year from now. It isn't something that comes easy for us, but it is what we need to do. I have a meltdown almost every day. Know that you are not alone in this.

This cancer journey is not easy , that's why we are called strong/brave women. There are limited choices to say the least. I have said often "baby steps" and before you know it you'll be at the finish line. I still have a few surgeries to go myself till I got that line. Learn to love the new you and with cloths on nobody will see what you don't like. Your loved ones will not love you any less the way you are, most just so pleased your still alive. God bless
