So at the beginning of February 2013, I booked with a well known tattoo artist for a day of the dead tattoo. He was here for a tattoo convention. I told him that I didn't want a lot of black and it to be very colorful. He assured me that he would make it awesome. Well he laid me down to where I couldn't view the tattoo. Half way through, I saw the amount of black used and freaked out. Thinking i could deal with it, I asked him if the eyes would stand out. He assured me as soon as I healed they would. He finished the entire tattoo in an hour and 45 minutes.

Now that I reflect on the day, I should have walked away. He was behind on his tattoos. He complained of a hangover. Lots of red flags. His next tattoo appointment walked up even before we started. I know that I am to blame in this. I had this gut feeling to just walk away.

The next day, I knew that she would have to be removed. I started to call around and do some research. I found a clinic somewhat local to me that did the R20 method. I booked a free consultation. I met with them about a month after getting the tattoo.

They did two of the three treatment the first day. I started to blister pretty bad after the second and the tech was afraid that I might scar. The unlimited treatments with the company is $1000 or $280 per treatment. They estimated that it would take 10 total treatments. After the first treatment, they recommended single passes with the laser to ensure no scarring. The picture is from the second visit with them. I wish I had taken a picture of the tattoo before the treatments began. I see that it was already more dull after the first treatment. Hoping that once this is healed, more evidence of her leaving me is apparent.

aloha murphree76234...I'm so glad that you shared your story.  Today many people are sharing the stories of "red flags" that arose while being tattooed but they didn't walk away.  I certainly was shown the signs but didn't walk away and now I'm in for a long haul.  But I'm thankful for so many who have shared their story, supported me and others.  I had two single treatments eight weeks apart and then this last third session I had the R20: three passes separated by a 30 minute wait.  The intensity was at level 5 on a trivantage machine.  With each session, beginning with the inital session the intensity was increased but the technician did a test patch and then waited to see how the skin would react.  I do know from all the internet reading that I've done that each person reacts differently, so it's never what's good for him will be good for me.  I also know that the laser is just the beginning, it's then up to our immune systems to deal with the lasered ink and everyone is different there.  I've read many accounts that people take it slow and steady and over a few years have the ink lasered off.  It's easier to get the ink then to remove it, but I'm sure you knew that already.  I practice the three Ps (and I'm sure people who read my postings know these) PATIENCE, PERSISTENCE and POSITIVENESS.  Thanks for sharing.  Good luck with your fading.  aloha...k

I love your three P's, it is such a great motto to the whole removal process! Red flags, I think we've all had them. I'm glad that we are all on the road to getting ourselfs whole - physically, mentally and spiritually!

Kahelelani: have you experienced any scaring? I am still on the fence about the r20 or regular treatments. I've heard that it causes scarring and I've heard that it doesn't cause any. The information about tattoo removal is soooo inconsistent.

Red flags, oh I hear ya... The day I went in for my tattoo 1 I was running late getting off work to make it to the appointment, still needed to go home and change and then on my way to the appointment I was stuck behind a SLOW car... 2 when I walked in he had a HUGE design that I felt I was ready for and told him to make it smaller... 3. he DIDNT make it smaller and placed the stencil on me, I decided eh, wth... (HUGE MISTAKE) 4 as he started to tattoo me it HURT SO BAD I SWEAR HE WAS CARVING MY SKIN, I was TERRIFIED I would scar and "tapped out" right after the outline because of how much it hurt... (I have 3 other big pieces and finished all three with no issues so this said a lot) 5 there was a wine bottle in his cubicle, he said it was a client before that was nervous for a tattoo and her sister took her the wine and they forgot it (Should I have believed him?, maybe not thinking back) But truth is we all didnt walk away for whatever reason and thankfully there is technology that gives us the option to try and correct these mistakes...

I can relate! I also had "warning signs" .. like the artist said he couldnt place the tattoo any lower on my back even though i requested it go lower down. (the whole issue and reason i ended up adding to it years later, therefore making me hate it even more now) He stopped half way through to smoke a cigarette... like that couldnt wait... he tried to tell us about his new "head shop" where he was basically going to be selling bowls you smoke weed out of... and it hurt so bad that i had to bite into a jacket... it felt like he was digging into me with a knife... several tattoos later, i now realize they arent actually supposed to hurt THAT bad... and now i am scarred for life.

Scarred,? Yours scarred? I think mine has some level of scarring, it looks shiny when looked at from certain angles and some areas feel a little raised if you apply some pressure on it to feel... But still... :( it definitely shouldn't have hurt like that... I feel ya!

I think your corny was in reply to mine lol ..yes mine on my back scarred. It's 3d. I'm sure ill have trouble removing it :( I hate it so much and I hate the ones on my ankles too . Can't wait until fall so I don't have to look at them !

Comment not corny damn you auto correct!!
July 4, 2013
Oh that's horrible :( so its raised real bad? :(
July 5, 2013
Yes. It's on my lower back and I can reach back there and feel exactly where it is. Only the original. The bottom part which was a (hideous) addition isn't done that way so you can tell its not how my skin heals, it's just the product of a horrible tattoo artist.

I had the same anxiety about black! I love color and my skin takes it so well and when I saw how black my arm was I completely lost it. I get it!

aloha uninkme,  Yes the information is inconsistent perhaps that's because we each react differently.  The ink is different, the skin is different, the technician's skill is different and of course the laser level. I am also given lidocaine injections not everyone is.   I have had one R20 six weeks ago, the blistering was minimal, the shedding no different than before.  I do however have raised bits on some the lasered area, not all, and this might be to aftercare.  I slather on intensive healing, aloe and vit e capsules.  But if it gets rid of the offending ink, I'm happy.  I return at the end of the month for another session and the technician may decide to go the conventional route.  I'm still waiting to see more results from the picosure and may consider travelling to a clinic for that.  Good Luck!  aloha...k

Three Treatments In

Good grief, she is still here. I guess patients is the game. What can you do? Since there is so much black, I'm going once every 8 weeks. The tech thinks I will start seeing major changes in treatment 6 to 8. I hope so. I can see that the red spiderweb isn't connecting anymore. If you look, you can see it too. Which is progress. I hate this tattoo so much. I'm in Texas and we are hitting 100 degree days. I'm still wearing pants. I can't wait till its gone. Or at least faded enough to do a good cover up.

Hey there, checking in to see how you are making out with your tattoo. I hear you on not liking the black, I had the same thing happen...told the artist no dark black, and got the complete opposite...sigh... are you removing the whole tattoo?
