Few thoughts on my experience with Dr Rahban

Most people don't undergo plastic surgery on a whim. A lot of thought, planning and weighing of pros and cons go into it. My advise to anyone considering a procedure is to consult a plastic surgeon early. Invest time in finding someone who is experienced in the procedure that you are considering. Check out before and after photos, read testimonials. If you pick the right doctor, you will ensure great results and minimize risk. With that, I wanted to share a couple of thoughts on my experience with Dr Rahban.
First, he is very direct and to-the-point in his approach. There's no small talk or sugar coating but straight facts. During my first onsite visit, he took the time to educate me on each procedure that he recommended including why he thought I should undergo it, what I should expect once it's done and any risks.
Second, he is a perfectionist and very detail oriented - attributes that I valued in my plastic surgeon. He also took time to answer my questions. That coupled with the fact that he is highly in demand, led to high wait times but it was totally worth it!

Chin Implant

I'm a male in my 40s. I've always had a recessed chin that stands out in my profile view. I also have a dorsal hump on my nose which extenuates the weak chin. Until a few years back, I lived with that being me until I learnt about chin augmentation. About year ago, after seeing a number of before and after pics of chin augmentation, I began to entertain the idea of undergoing the procedure. I started spending more time researching the procedure and doctors. My biggest fears that kept me away were long terms risks such as the damaged mental nerve, infection and the implant being too large. I learnt that the best way to mitigate those risks was to go to a plastic surgeon that not only was board certified but also had significant experience performing the same procedure. During my research, I ran into a YouTube video of Dr. Rady Rahban. He not only seemed really knowledgeable but seemed to have a calm about him that instinctively gave me the confidence to go with him. I called his office, spoke with Maggie who was really nice and patiently explained the process to me while answering all my questions. She mentioned that Dr. Rahban often took a class for this procedure in Las Vegas, which was inspiring.

It wasn't until about 7 months later that I made an appointment to travel to LA to meet him (yes, I am not local to LA). During the visit which lasted about an hour, Dr Rahban, suggested that I undergo a chin implant, a rhinoplasty and get fat transfer to the chin around the implant to round off the jaw. He went through each procedure in detail and explained the benefits and the risks to me. Since one of my goals was to not look radically different, I decided not to get the rhinoplasty done. A dorsal hump runs in the family and a change to it would have been very obvious. So even though Dr Rahban was right about that making a positive impact to my appearance, it was a personal choice to not go ahead with it. I confirmed that I wanted to get a chin implant done. Soon a date was scheduled. I was to fly into LA and stay there through my 1 week Post appointment. Dr Rahban provided a detailed checklist that I followed to the T. He prescribed a bunch of medicines including pain killer (norco), antibiotics, steroid to lower inflammation, anti-nausea, what to bring along, pre-op instructions, what I should expect the day of the procedure and beyond. I stayed at a Residence Inn and upon Sally’s (Dr Rahban’s Chief of Staff) recommendation, arranged for a drop off back to the hotel after the surgery. I arrived in LA a day before the surgery and stocked up on liquids (gaterade, juices, lots of water and yogurt). I also got enough soft foods to eat including rice, lentils, eggs, bread etc and got a few meals catered later that week.

Overall it was a good experience for me. The day of the operation I shaved the chin area well and headed to the site of surgery at 6am. Dr Rahban made some markings on the chin, after which I was put to sleep. I woke up with a tight adhesive bandage on my chin up to under my ears. Once back at the hotel, I had breakfast and slept for the most of that day. There was some pain though I did not need norco or the anti-nausea and managed with regularly taking Tylenol for 3 days. As instructed, I avoided hard food and slept for the next 7 days with 3 pillows while catching up on lots of movies. I also went the longest without a bath - 7 days! The following monday, I headed back Dr Rahban’s office, where he removed the stitches and took off the adhesive bandage. That hurt a little though it was all over within 5 mins. Apparently, the stitches had healed well and I was free to go about my normal routine including showering except lifting weights and exercising for the next 3 weeks. While there was some swelling, I was delighted with my new look, especially my profile view! Recovery from there on was fairly smooth. There was some tightness when I smiled and especially if I laughed. There was also a tender spot on the chin (only when I pressed there) that lasted about 6 weeks. However, I did not have any loss of sensation on my chin, there was no infection and no one noticed that I had undergone the procedure except the few compliments that I must have been working out! I am now 4 months post op and the new chin completely feels part of me and I feel more confident of my looks, especially my profile view.

Looking back, I am so happy that I got the procedure done. Although I could have gone with a local plastic surgeon in San Jose or SF, I am glad that I went with Dr Rahban. He and his staff were amazing and he lived up to the trust that I placed in him. A big thanks to Sally who was always there if I had any questions, to facilitate the medical checks, and when I had all kinds of apprehensions the weekend before flying out to LA, responding multiple times over email to support me.

For anyone considering this procedure, I’d strongly recommend giving it a serious thought. It is minimally invasive and brings you rich dividends. As I learnt from Dr Rahban, there is something about a chin implant, that can make a drastic improvement in facial appearance like no other procedure can. So if you have any doubts, please go see a plastic surgeon soon. You owe it to yourself!
