After Two Broken Noses -- Time to Fix Plumbing & Big Bump

WORTH IT$8,000
This review is super late but in July 2016 I finally had my septoplasty with turbinate reduction. I had broken my nose as a kid & then again in 2015 when one of my kids was playing mini golf.

I have never been under general anthesia and was super nervous. I also was nervous about changing my nose as I am in my 40's! (The only cosmetic thing was shaving down the bump on the bridge which had gotten much more pronounced after breaking nose 2x).

Dr. Schoenfeld showed me videos of what my nose would look like before and after and what he would do. Note, I had extremely crazy deviated septums and had been snoring like a truck driver. I had to get the plumbing fixed. I was so tired and my husband not very psyched to share a bed.

My sister came with me to the procedure. My husband and kids out of town for a week (which was great). I was so nervous but the nurses, anesthesiologist and whole team super great. I asked them if they had a crash cart in case I flatline -- yes they do. Note -- I wouldn't get any major surgery without doctors and crash carts on site. Make sure your surgery center has all these things.

Also, before my operation, I made sure I had all the things for a comfortable and smooth recovery: humidifiers especially for bedroom, weird device so glasses don't rest on your nose (thanks Amazon), Arnica (already started taking), Bromelian, pineapple juice, candy to suck on to keep tongue wet while you are a mouth breather, soft foods, ice cream and popsicles. I made homemade chicken soup too. Also, neosporin for the incision. I also pre-filled pain meds and made sure I had Advil on hand too.

IV went in no problem. We reviewed the procedure. I told anesthesiologist to be careful of my crowns :). In the theater, my heart was definitely racing. Dr. Schoenfeld was (per usual) funny, reassured me and put me at ease. I told him that I wanted to wake up and look like Giselle dammit, or else I would sue him. With that, I was told to count backward and probably got to 4 before I drifted off.

Next thing I knew, I was being woken up in recovery. I just wanted to sleep. The awesome male recovery nurse (forgot his name) told me NOT to touch my face. (Apparently that is the first thing people do.) I didn't. I just wanted to sleep. My sister said, that was fast! I dozed in and out, not in pain at all.

Dr. Schoenfeld came in and asked me how I liked my new boobs. HUH? This man is hilarious. He said the surgery was easy peasy and got my septum needed fixing. Literally in the recovery room I could already breathe better -- crazy.

We went home a little while later and I immediately got in bed and passed out sitting upright (you must sleep upright to keep swelling to minimum). I recommend a travel pillow to make it comfortable. I ate some soup that night but was scared to really move around from pain. I was a little uncomfortable but not horrible. Still I wanted to be a head of the pain and took the prescription pain relievers which made me sleep a lot. The next afternoon my sister had to leave and she was nervous since I was sleeping a lot. It was totally fine. I did have some pretty robust black eyes. I kept icing (soooo important) the first 48 hours and slept upright. I used saline drops in nose to keep moist even though I was scared. It help clears out dried blood and moisturizes nose.

I woke up periodically with a sandpaper tongue but humidifier helps a ton and so does sips of water. I had a few friends come over that weekend to see me and bring me magazines, etc. They were like -- you don't look so bad! I felt okay and watched Netflix, slept and honestly was kind of nice to do absolutely NOTHING.

5 days after the surgery, Dr. Schoenfeld removed the internal splints and external split. I was super nervous because people say this can be super painful. He cleaned out the blood, gave the nose a close look (poor man) and took out splints. Literally no big deal. He showed me the nose and I was terrified. It was definitely swollen but I could breathe like a champ and the bump was gone. He taped the nose and told me I could take the tape off later in the week and I was healing well.

I went to a movie by myself that day -- felt fine in public with my weird nose bandage. A little self conscious with bruises. A week later I was healed enough to go to the 2016 DNC convention for work. I had some undereye bruising (which took awhile to resolve which is normal but coverable with makeup and powder).

I would say that the swelling really doesn't 100 resolve for almost two years. I am completely pleased with the function of my nose as well as my profile. Literally NO ONE can tell anything was altered. I look like me but better. Some people asked me if I lost weight LOL.

I can't recommend Dr. Schoenfeld enough. He was technically fabulous for all my plumbing issues but also knew what I wanted for my cosmetic adjustment. It was 100% worth it and I would choose Dr. Schoenfeld again for any surgical or cosmetic needs.
