Background: I have suffered from hyperhydrosis for...
Background:
I have suffered from hyperhydrosis for the last 12 years (since 9th grade) and have tried everything in the book to minimize the effects of execessive sweating. The first sense of relief I had was botox injections back in 2010; however, they were pretty uncomfortable, and the sweating only stopped for about three months before coming back. Moreover, the botox caused compensatory sweating in other areas...we will save the details on that one. I discovered MiraDry on google after two instances where I sweatted through my suit - one was during the ceremony of my Wedding, the other was during a business deal after the wedding. I was determined to find a way to fix this sitation once and for all. Luckily, the doctor that performed my procedure has her office less than 10 minutes from my office, and they have been doing MiraDry procedures for the last 4 years (wish I had known earlier). After my consultation, I decided to go forward with the procedure.
Procedure:
I underwent the procedure on Thursday, February 22nd. The nurse that performed the majority of the procedure was excellent, and she kept me relaxed during the whole process. After doing the sweat test, to see where I am sweating, a sencil was used to outline the area where I would be receiving the treatment. The numbing process was a new method that was nearly painless where they gave me three separate tiny shots to numb three spots on the perimiter of my stenciled area. I could not feel these at all as the needle was so small. The doctor then went in with a much longer (~6") needle from these numbed sites that was able to reach all areas of the armpit and insert the numbing solution throughout. I'm horrible with needles, so I am glad I did not look (at first) when they started using the second needle. It was awkward, but completely painless because the numbing solution came out ahead of the needle. This also benefitted me by having a much faster recovery time.
Once my armpits were like little balloons filled with the numbing solution, the procedure started. It took just over one hour from this point to complete the remainder of the procedure where they essentially microwave your sweat glands along with any bacterial glands that cause bad smells. The doctor, through her experience, had discovered how to make less than 1% of her patients return for a second procedure by unlocking the machine to do Level 5 treatment across the entire specturm of the armpit. Normally, the machine defaults to Level 1 on the perimeters. Additionally, where the sweat was the worst based on my sweat test, she restarted the machine and did a second pass, essentially causing it to be as if I came in for a second procedure. After the procedure was done, I put some ice packs under my armpits and returned to work.
Recovery and Results:
The only discomfort I felt after the procedure was the night after the procedure occurred. I was very diligent in icing and taking ibuprofin to ease the swelling. I had three sets of ice packs set up and rotated them throughout the night once the ice pack warmed up. It felt like a sunburn on a big bruise; but I could sleep through it pretty easily. The next morning was the most swollen I was durinig recovery. I went to work wearing a loose polo and a loose 3/4 zip pullover to hide the ice packs I kept on during the day. At this point, the only discomfort was from the swelling. By the end of my work day, the swelling was much less than when I woke up.
By the afternoon of day two, I was back to my normal self. I am very happy to report that since this procedure, I have had zero excessive sweating. I can go about my day not worrying about covering up stains on my shirts. My sweat in this area, when it happens, is so minimal it does not even make my shirt damp. Swelling by day 4 is pretty much gone, and I am back to my regular gym schedule. I was so happy with the results that I ended up buying a bunch of new shirts in colors I never thought I could wear along with throwing away any shirt that has any evidence of pit staining in my closet. I feel like a new me!
In conclusion, if you are on the fence about MiraDry, I highly recommend it. It is hard to imagine how much time and energy you spend worrying about hyperhidrosis until you no longer need to worry about it. It is the best decision I have made to go through with MiraDry.
