Unfortunately one of my keloids came back. In the future, if I choose to have it excised I need to follow up with the radiation treatments. I've decided to pursue kenalog injections again. I'm being treated at a Dermatologist.
Week 2
Scars are 98% closed. I will start applying Biocorneum next week after my doctor's appointment. For now, I'm cleaning with alcohol 2x daily and applying bacitracin ointment. I did have an allergic reaction to the tape used on the bandages so I'm taking benadryl.

A keloid scar is one in which there is overgrowth of dense fibrous tissue. This usually develops after the injury has healed. It does not normally regress spontaneously and it will usually recur after excision. This contrasts with hypertrophic scars, which stay within the borders of the original wound. With that said, I recently had 2 keloid scars on my upper shoulder area excised. This was in conjunction with another unrelated procedure. For 8 years I have been getting intralesional steroid injections in 10 of my keloids; 2 finally flattened after injections. Luckily my health insurance has paid for the injections. Like I said, 2 have diminished over time due to the injections, but some have been unresponsive to treatment. I had 2 excised a week ago; not covered by health insurance. It is still too early to tell the outcome, but wanted to start a review with hopes to help other keloid sufferers. I am one who doesn't scar well. Usually my scars are hypertrophic, but the ones on my upper shoulder region are from old acne scars and unfortunately they did keloid. If they heal well, I plan to have the remaining ones excised. The recurrence rate is high, which is why I only had 2 excised. This was kind of a test...
This procedure was done in an office OR setting. I did not have sutures, rather bandages. I have removed the bandages and right now they are semi still open, not completely closed, but do look much better. I am applying bacitracin ointment 2x per day and keeping them covered with a bandaid. I do not plan to have radiation treatments - just want to see how they heal on their own. Once they are fully closed, I will start scar therapy treatment (BioCorneum) to be applied twice daily. I will be posting pictures soon.
Additionally, I had a tummy tuck scar revision done with Dr. Coan about 6 months ago. The scar originally healed hypertrophic after my tummy tuck, but is now flat and looks much better. I hope the same will happen with my keloid scars.
Stay tuned...
