Calf Ankle & Knee Liposuction

I struggled to find good reviews for this procedure since it isn’t very common. So I hope this helps someone else. Despite aggressive working out 5 days a week, I have never been able to reduce the fat I hold in my lower legs. For reference I am 5’6” 130lbs 39 years old. I’m currently exactly 2 weeks post op. Being transparent, this procedure has been way harder on me than I expected. I thought I would be able to do light exercise one week post op, and be back at the gym 2 weeks post op. Maybe that’s the case for some people, but definitely not me. The procedure itself was very uncomfortable for me, although I did opt to avoid narcotics so was not on any pain meds beforehand. I only took 2 ibuprofen at a time for a few days afterwards. I was not prepared for the discomfort. I have had a tummy tuck, and the first 2 weeks of this, have been harder on my than the first two weeks of that. The intense burning when I would stand would sometimes require me to just brace myself and bear it until it slowly went away. Any amount of touching my legs was very painful. Putting on the compression garment, was very uncomfortable for at least the first week. 2 weeks post op and my legs are not sensitive to touch anymore, but they are still sore with pressure or squeezing. I still get some burning when I stand up, but it’s considerably better. I currently have pretty intense swelling around my knees and ankles, to the point that I cannot bend my knees very far. It’s very hard feeling! Not squishy, like you might expect swelling to be. My right leg and right ankle has much more swelling than the left. Another thing that surprised me was how yellow my legs turned. They looked jaundice. I know my knees still look so puffy. I asked my doctor about this and he said I have very unusual knees (yes I know), and that they found I had a lot of connective tissue aside from the fat pockets. So I don’t expect my knees to be as cute as I was hoping. Despite that, I can already start to see better definition in my left leg, than pre surgery. My ankles are thinner and my calves are more defined. Which is encouraging, considering I still have a lot of swelling. I know it will keep getting better with time.
As far as Dr Kerr, he was very kind, and thorough. I do believe he did a wonderful job. He is retiring, so I’m thankful I was able to do this before he hung up his hat.
The videos are 2 and 5 days post op.
I will do my best to update as I continue to heal.

Thank you for posting this! You're right...it's not easy to find reviews from others who have done this. I hope to do it soon. Keep the photos coming please! Good luck!

Going to update photos today. I feel like it’s hard to get good photos but I can say that I have way more defined lower legs. Although one of the biggest challenges to this particular procedure is that you have a mirror image of your leg, with the other. So any differences are very obvious. To myself at least. My right leg had way more swelling to begin with and now is measuring about a half inch smaller around the calf area. So he removed more fat from my right leg. I think it’s just something I’m going to have to live with, and hope it isn’t obvious to others. I’m still not happy with my knees, and need more vein treatments. All that to say, I am way happier with how I feel in workout leggings! Thankfully it’s winter, so my legs have more time to heal. I still have noticeable swelling that feels hard and tight. I still have discoloration in my legs, and the little scars are darker. Just be prepared for a very slow recovery! I’m hopeful by the 6 month mark to feel comfortable wearing shorts.

13 weeks post op

13 weeks post op and I’m still dealing with hardness from swelling, and discoloration in my skin. I have much more definition in my calves, but unfortunately my right leg had more fat removed than my left. It’s measuring about 1/2” smaller around the calf. Which is pretty significant, considering it’s only about a 13” circumference. All in all, I’m happier with my legs beforehand. But plan for a long, slow recovery. And keep in mind that your legs are mirror images of each other. So any differences the doctor creates, will be obvious to you because you will be comparing one leg to the other. I wish both of my legs had turned out like my left. Oh well.

Thank you for this review. Your legs look great! I’m considering having this done. If you can tell me any more about the recovery.

To be honest, the recovery was horrible. It was way more painful than expected. It also was so slow! 10 months later and I still have discoloration as well as tingling in my legs. I don’t know if I will ever regain full sensation in my ankles. My legs are also not smooth anymore. They just don’t have a natural look to them, like if I’d never had this done. I do sometimes regret having it done, as I’m not very happy with the results. I traded having excess fat for having unevenness, and bumpiness. If I had to do it over again, I would go to Dr Thomas Su, as he seems the most qualified. My advice would be to not expect perfection. And even better, be okay with your body the way God made it. I definitely understand the struggle for the latter but wish I was more at peace with what I feel are imperfections. .

Was your procedure regular tumescent liposuction or vaser liposuction?

Tumescent.

Hi, I’ve been meaning to reply to you. I ended up having tumescent liposuction on my calves. I’m about 9 weeks out from surgery. I’m in my 50s and was worried about my skin not snapping back so I also had J-plasma. I still have tingling and numbness in my calves, so now I completely understand your experience. Most of the swelling has subsided except some near my ankles. I’m mostly happy that I had it done because I hated the big mound of jiggly fat I had near the top inside of my calves (it would jiggle in the worst way every time I walked…so embarrassing), but I have some identical unevenness and discoloration that you describe. I’m hoping some of this subsides over time, but the fact that you’re 10 months out and still dealing with some of it makes me realize it’ll be a long recovery. Anyway, thanks again for your review. I plan to post my review with photos…maybe after the holidays.

They look so good! Did you have lipedema or just wanted liposuction ?
May 8, 2025
Just wanted to get rid of extra fat. I definitely don’t love how bumpy my legs look. They don’t have a smoothness to them like they used to. And I have pockets of fat in different areas.

Oh no :(
