I'd hated my smile and my appearance since around age 14. I had braces in my teenage years that corrected my bite, but my prognathic jaw, small mid-face and large chin were never addressed. I was always incredibly self-conscious about smiling and having my photo taken.

I approached orthodontist Dr Steven Scott in October 2013 as my teeth had moved because of a broken bonded retainer. He recommended jaw surgery and referred me to Dr Julian Hirst.

In July 2014 (aged 22) I had a Le Fort I, a Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy and a sliding genioplasty reduction. The surgery itself went smoothly, and while it is major surgery and there were certainly moments of great discomfort, I wouldn't change a thing.

To say that it was the best decision of my life would be a total understatement. I have never been happier with my appearance, and emotionally I've never felt so good - I really do feel like a changed person. I'm thrilled with my results and the care that I have received.

I can't believe I never saw this review!  Amazing, beautiful results.  Congratulations, and I'm so happy to hear that you got through this with no major complications!  At 13 weeks, most of our jaw surgery community members are still a little swollen and some still don't have full nerve recovery.  How are things going for you on those fronts, now that you're, what, 15 weeks out?

Thanks! I'm really happy. I have one area on the left down my lip and chin that doesn't have full sensation - it tingles to the touch. It's improved a little in the last three weeks, so fingers crossed. Sometimes I wonder if I have any swelling, but it's so hard to tell when you don't know your own face. But I feel fantastic!

That's a very valid point.  I know that's one of the things that stresses some people out--that they're not sure whether this is their final look or not.  But so far your result is so unambiguously great, that must help :D.  How much longer do you need to be in braces?

I figure it could only get better from here, right?! :) I will hopefully be getting my braces off in January, so not too long at all now! I can't wait.

Wow you look amazing! I am actually on my way to getting surgery but for the opposite reason, I have a small lower jaw which gives me a very weak chin. I will be having my lower jaw advanced and also genioplasty to give me more of a chin. If I get results as amazingly different like yours, I will be ecstatic! Good on you! Looks fantastic!

Congratulation to you!!!! :) I was surprise that my case is 90% similar to your. I just had the first consultation with my doctor today, and I feel not confidence about what I gonna do. Then I just found this website, and see your images. Can I have your email address that I can ask you some question that I don't want to ask in here? If you don't mine! Thanks and congrat again.

Congrats! You look great! Quick question, did the Lefort I change your nose angle? Also, how was your bite and teeth alignment before surgery? And did it help with your mid face? I've heard good things about the Lefort I and it only gets better as time progresses. Happy healing!

Thanks! My nose became a little bit more upturned but (like most people) I had an alar stitch to stop excessive widening of the nostrils. I like the very subtle change in my nose. My bite was ok before surgery and I feel a big part of the improvement was from the rotation of the jaws. In the last picture you can see the difference in my bite and smile. And I do have a slightly fuller midface although I didn't have a huge forward movement :-) Very happy with the results!

Thank you so much for your post! My problem is so similar to yours, that it was like reading my own story. I too had braces when I was younger which corrected my bite, but at around age 14 my upper jaw stopped growing and my lower jaw and chin grew. I didn't know this could happen and for many years, I thought I was losing my mind. I hate having my picture taken and am embarrassed to smile. I'm 52 and think it's time to have this fixed. One doctor suggested having my chin reduced and malar implants to add mid-face fullness. I was wondering if this option was offered by your doctor? If I knew 100% I'd get as wonderful results as you, I'd have the surgery in a heart beat!!! Congratulations on such great results!!!

Hey, there, thanks! I wasn't offered that option. When I was much younger in my first set of braces, my old orthodontist did mention a genioplasty once the braces were off and the imbalance was starting to become apparent. Have you tried posting on here ("Ask A Doctor") to get some professional opinions? And have you been to an orthodontist? I would also recommend joining the group We Need/Got Jaw Surgery if you have Facebook - there are quite a few women your age who have had surgery recently. Let me know if you have any questions - It was SO worth it to me! I also have a blog - www.stitchmysmile.blogspot.com.au - where I have been documenting literally everything. Best wishes! :)
