Dr. Evil’s “laser” Has Nothing on Dr. Lim’s Arsenal

I’m a 38yr old male who consulted Dr. Lim for atrophic and tethered acne scarring early this year. After several treatment sessions involving subcision, laser resurfacing (predominantly CO2 core) and some HA filler, I am very pleased with the results. Dr. Lim nerds out on lasers (he has several for varying applications and skin types) and is passionate about treating acne scarring. He is truly an authority in this area, arguably “the authority” in cosmetic dermatology domestically and internationally. Unfortunately, some patients may misconstrue Dr. Lim’s enthusiasm and knowledge for his work as arrogance. Though, my experience included a well communicated, tailored approach to my particular scarring, combined with a sentiment of genuine care for my welfare as a patient and an understanding of the deep psychological impact associated with acne scarring. I also appreciated the fact that he is part of an international brains trust allowing progressive treatment options moving forward. He often told me about future treatment options eg. stem cell therapy and ‘Dermal smash’, an alternative to micro-dermal grafting for atrophic scars. On that note, may I please advise that anyone who is considering traditional dermal grafting instead of HA filler please speak to Dr. Lim first. Microdermal grafting from a prior dermatologist caused dermal cysts and significant tethered scarring in my face which took Dr. Lim several sessions of skilful subcision and laser to remedy.

Though Dr. Lim is pioneering in his methods, he still adopts a conservative “do no harm” approach which put my mind at ease. eg. he started with ‘gentler’ lasers or lower powers and judged the reaction of my skin after ~ 6weeks prior to continuing/altering the treatment.

Is my skin perfect? No it’s not, though the scarring is now to the degree where you would not notice it at conversational distance, which was Dr. Lim’s and my shared goal. Though most importantly, the scarring is no longer psychologically impactful, instead something akin to ‘patina’ I’ve acquired during my life . . . like a well maintained 1980s Porsche 911, with a few scuffs and stone chips that has been professionally detailed - imperfect though desirable for its honesty. You see the Porsche first and the ‘imperfections’ only upon close scrutiny. This acceptance of imperfections was an unexpected mental lesson that I am glad to have absorbed from Dr. Lim. Needless to say, it was the 100% improvement in my acne scarring that assisted me in adopting this philosophy.

So if you have significant acne scarring which affects your confidence/happiness, with realistic expectations, you’re likely one of the patients that Dr. Lim can most assist. We are also very fortunate in Australia that Medicare rebates exist for some types of acne scarring, minimising the financial burden.

Thank you Davin, as I mentioned last week, you have positively impacted my life. You’re certainly not a Dr. Evil type, more of a ‘restoration man’.
