My Breast Reduction Could Not Have Gone Smoother!
I have wanted a BR since I was a teenager. I never thought it was something I could afford. However, now being in my 40's and being in pain every day with no relief from meds, massages, adjustments, etc., I couldn't afford not to. I researched for over a year. Consulted with 4 surgeons in my area over during that time, and excitedly made my appointment with Dr. Farahmand in June.
I could not be happier with my choice of surgeons, results, and recovery. I am a few days shy of 6 weeks post op, when I will be able to resume all activities.
I had a lot of breast tissue removed. I don't know my true bra size, but would wear 38DDD or 36E bras and still hang out. I'm only 5'3"! To say I was unproportioned is an understatement. I asked Dr. Farahmand to take me down to a C or D cup. In her wisdom, she also asked me to bring her a photo, since bra sizes can vary so much. Again, being the amazing surgeon that she is, she told me she could not guarantee to get me that small, because she'd have to ensure that she wasn't taking too much and risking me losing blood flow to my nipple. She was, however, able to take out 3lbs/1.36kg! And my nipple sensation is coming back! I had one surgeon tell me he could make me flat if I wanted, never mentioning any risk to my nipples. Run, if some surgeon tells you nonsense like that. Dr. Farahmand and her nurses always even from the first free consult spent as much time as I needed to have questions answered and to give me a full picture of what was happening and going to happen! I was even able to see the pre-op, surgical, and recovery rooms during my initial consult. The office just went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable.
As far as pain, which many nay-sayers (none of whom had had a BR) warned would make it not worth it, it has never been unbearable. The worst pain (and of course this varies widely by person) was my throat from the tube when I first woke up and the car ride home. Because my throat hurt so bad, I didn't eat anything, and thus, couldn't take my pain meds before the car ride home. I would not recommend that! ha! I felt every pebble in the road! I did have drains, which not every one has, but considering how much was taken out, I did. They were not particularly comfortable, but I also did not have the rock-hard pain that many women experience afterward. The second most painful thing was having the drains removed, but that was over in a second. I took my prescription pain meds for about 3 days, and then was able to switch to Tylenol.
Weeks 2 and 3, I was just sore and tired out easily. The soreness was like when you are nursing and the baby has skipped a meal or 2 and you are extra full, or for those who have never breast fed, it's like after a really hard work out.
By week 4, I would just have occasional soreness, usually at the end of the day when I was tired or itching. It's pretty common to have a sharp pain here and there; I've had some of that, but not much. I really have had about the smoothest recovery one could ask for. My primary nurse says it's because I'm such a good patient (yeah, me!) and followed all the rules, but I have been very well taken care of. If you can't tell, I love my surgeon and nurses!
Incisions! I had the typical anchor procedure. Another thing that I was super pleased with was my surgeon started the underneath incision low enough that even if my scars are bad (which I doubt), I can still wear a low-cut top without them being seen. Every doctor has a different protocol, based on my consults with other surgeons, Dr. Farahmand is very conservative, and I liked that. I had appoints the day after, 3 days after, a week after, and then once a week until week 4, to change and check my incisions. I have had zero problems.
All of my neck pain is not gone. I am after all 43, and have had this extra weight pulling on my neck for over 20 years! However, it is so much better, and I think a good chiro adjustment will help. Bra straps do not dig into my shoulders. In fact, when my nurses put my surgical bra on after the surgery, I thought it didn't fit properly because the straps were not digging into me! This is a wonderful new normal to get used to! I'm very much looking forward to exercising without 2 or 3 sports bras. My bras now contain all of me. No bulging over the top. It's just makes me feel so much better and more confident to not feel like I am unporportioned or looking weird in my clothes because my breasts are bulging out in weird places.
I did not take any naked before or after photos (doctor did), but I'm going to attach a before and after in the same dress. This was taken at 4 weeks post op.
The only con I can think of is the cost. My insurance would not cover it (and most of the surgeons in my area won't even take/work with insurance). For me, it was expensive, but I'm glad I did it. I think it will pay off in quality of life.
As a lot of happy BR patients say, my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner.
