Still Healing, but Hopeful!

WORTH IT
Was able to have this done locally. Dr Taylor is the only surgeon who does breast reduction in my area. It’s been a different journey than I had expected-with longer healing times due to the breast tissue degrading with necrosis. I had seen that a few others had had this happen. It’s a risk. I had assumed those were women who smoked or had unhealthy diets. Not the case here. My doctor suggested skin grafts, however, after 7 weeks post op, I am growing skin back! I love the overall size change. He did not take more off my larger breast, so may be slightly asymmetrical, but looks fine to me in clothing. Very happy to have gone from 34G/H to whatever I end up with, which may be B/C.

I’m glad you are seeing signs of healing after such unfortunate circumstances. I admire your patience, transparency and ability to focus on the positives. I wish you continued success for your healing

Thank you for you kind words. I am doing well. We all go through unfortunate circumstances in life. While we don't always have a choice what happens to us, we have a choice in how we respond. I did want people to know it is possible to have complications. I'm happy I did it, even though I had to go through the months of healing.

Hello! How are you healing?
July 29, 2020
Healing is going very well. By the end of June all previously open areas were covered with new skin. It is discolored and scarred, but pain in minimal. Right breast new skin area is sore when touched, but I am still pleased with the size. One looks to be C and one B, but I don't have to worry because I wear only stretchy bralettes.

I’m an RN retired who was once a wound care specialist.
So sorry you’re going through this—you have been brave but please seek help from a wound specialist and another plastics person even if you have to travel to do that.

Six Month Postoperative Update

I wanted to an update for those who have seen my original post to let you know that I am truly happy with my breast reduction. My previous images showed my wounds during hyperbaric treatment before the skin had grown back. I chose not to have a skin graft offered by my doctor. It took several weeks for the skin to completely die. Then the dead skin was removed and I used Medihoney to help with healing. The breasts were in the completely raw stage for a few more weeks before new skin began to grow. Now they are completely covered with new skin. There is some soreness in the new growth areas, but since I don’t have to wear underwire bras any more it is usually way less bothersome than underwire bra discomfort. I am hoping the soreness will fade more over time, but even if it doesn’t, I am still better off with my choice. There is so much freedom in how I can move, what I can wear, and comfort in my body. I could not previously wear any cable knit sweaters as it made me look enormous. I told my doctor I would be happy with a large b cup to small c cup and that is what I think I have, however I may never truly know my bra size because I live in little stretchy bralets. Before surgery I wondered if I would ever get used to a smaller looking breast, but it was not difficult. I love the Size and shape of my breasts.

Your breasts have a beautiful shape to them, and they do look great in the cable knit sweater. Our body's are a wonder how they heal, and skin regrows. I'm sure they'll just continue getting better.

Thanks for the encouraging comment. I never could wear cable knits before as it made me look so big. The wardrobe freedom is another great benefit! Also, jumping rope is now possible without problem :)

Thanks for sharing. Can you tell me why you had open wounds? Did something go wrong during surgery?

The doctor said he should have left the flap of skin thicker. Another doctor said the blood vessels to those areas were severed, so the tissue could not survive. The skin steadily degraded over a period of weeks. It is called skin necrosis. Then the dead tissue had to be cut off (debriding). It was awhile before the new skin covered the open wound, but did start to grow a few weeks into hyperbaric treatments. I chose not to have him do a skin graft and let my body heal itself. It is still sore in those areas, but I am still better off than with the large breasts.
Your optimism and hope are the best attitude to have during a complication. I'm sorry you're going through this right now, but glad to see there's already been improvement!
