21 yr old DDD+ to D

Long story short: I would do this again in a heartbeat!
I have wanted a breast reduction ever since I hit a D cup in puberty, for all the typical reasons. Anyways, I had no reservations about getting this done. I will just explain the days before, the day of, and after surgery.
Leading up to the surgery I made sure to avoid the drugs that my doctor instructed and took a lot of "before" pictures! Looking back on it, I wish I had taken even more--pictures in my everyday bra at the time, in different shirts and, of course, lots in the nude! Other than that, I cleaned the house really well and picked out my outfit for surgery day: a sports bra, zip-up hoodie, yoga pants and comfy tennis shoes. I took my prescribed antibiotics with my last two meals the day before surgery, and showered using the doctor's special sponge the night before. The sponge smelled weird and was a bit scratchy on my skin.
Surgery day:
I woke up around 5am on a Friday, jumped in the shower and scrubbed my chest and armpit areas again using another sponge given to me by the doctor. I put on the outfit I had picked out the night before and (thankfully) remembered to avoid deodorant, food and water. We grabbed a clean pillow and got on the road.
My husband drove us to the surgeon's office (about an hour away) and we arrived just on time: 6:45am. When we walked in, there was no one in sight and we ended up waiting about 20 minutes before I was called back. By this time, my stomach was growling and my armpits were already sweating--partially from the lack of deodorant and partially because of my nervous excitement.
Luckily, the waiting room had books filled with before-and-after pictures of my surgeon's breast reduction patients, and I became even more excited.
Eventually the nurse called me back to a small room where we sat and I answered questions about when I had last eaten, forms of payment, who was driving me home, etc. Then she directed me to the next room where I was given a locker to put all my clothes/purse in and put on a open-back gown, a warm robe and cozy socks. I was also asked to pee in a cup for the routine pregnancy test. After that I came back into the first room and sat in a comfy reclining chair. The nurse ran the pregnancy test and started my IV while making conversation and asking a lot of questions. She was so sweet and definitely made me comfortable.
Soon after, the nurse put these automatic massagers on my calves, which pulsed and squeezed to keep them warm and to keep the blood flowing. I found them to be really comfortable and soothing.
Next the nurse anesthetist came in and again asked when I had eaten/drank last and any recent medications I had taken. She nodded at her clipboard as my surgeon came in the room. It was time for markup.
My husband was able to come back and see me at that time. I stood up from my comfy chair and opened the front of my gown as my surgeon drew lines on my boobs. He was silent as he used his tape measure and black markers to draw all over me. When he was done, my husband took a picture of the markup (highly recommend!!) and said goodbye. After that, my nurse walked me into the operating room and laid me down on the table. As weird as it all was, everyone was so friendly and kept me very distracted with lots of questions. :) As I was answering one of their questions, I just... fell asleep!
The next thing I knew I woke up in the outpatient room in bed. My chest felt a little tight (no pain) and I soon realized where I was. I was instantly excited.
My nurse quickly came to my bed and handed me a smoothie that my husband had gotten me. They encouraged me to drink it as it would help kick any nausea from anesthesia. It felt weird eating at that point, but after a few sips I realized how hungry I had been.
I think I laid in bed sipping my smoothie for about an hour before the nurse came to help me get dressed. She also gave me two of my pain pills before I was wheeled out into the waiting room. I felt a little weak standing up and sitting down into the car, but none of it was uncomfortable. I reclined my seat a little bit and talked to my husband all the way home! Within an hour, though, the pain pills knocked me out and I slept for a few hours at home.
When I woke up, I felt a little weak but still walked around the house and ate dinner as usual. I had no pain and was able to switch out shirts when I needed to. I ended up not taking any more of my pain pills!
A few days later, I was instructed to shower. It was strange letting water run over the stitches tape but I felt much cleaner.
For the first few days, my boobs were very swollen! I knew they would get swollen, but I didn't understand how much. At first I was a little discouraged--they hardly looked any smaller than my boobs before the surgery. But I soon realized how much better they looked in general, even just a few days after surgery! My back instantly felt better, I felt lighter, like I could even breathe easier and had much more freedom in movement.
I was worried about sleep since I am a side/stomach sleeper, but I was comfortable sleeping on my side in just 3 days and on my stomach after a week or so!
I had occasional itching of the stitches, but the itching only lasted for 5 minutes or so each time.
I ended up buying a generic scar cream from Walgreens two weeks post-op and massaged my scars with it every night (massage is key).
I actually bought an underwire VS bra just 3 weeks post-op, and I was amazed at how comfortable it was! Now, that bra is just slightly looser but I think it fits me even better.
I had to return to the office 1 day, 1 week and 6 weeks post-op for dressing changes, a checkup and post-op pictures.
Aaaand with that, the rest is history. Everything is easier, I am SO much happier, I'm more confident, I enjoy working out, shopping, and I just bought my first swimsuit with small(er) boobs. I couldn't be happier with my experience and I would recommend it to anyone considering a breast reduction.
