Better Than Expected Outcome
Dr. Van Laeken performed a breast and scar revision following a surgical plan that, from start to finish, took a year beginning July 2025; initially to repair a gross deformity caused by an inept [Clinic 805 – Victoria Surgery] VIHA-based surgeon several years earlier. I paid >$30K for a straightforward mastopexy – that left me painfully scarred and mutilated instead. I wrongly assumed compassion and professional integrity were included in the Fee.
I was made ugly. The emotional and psychological trauma ran deeper – lasted longer. Trapped in the College Referral-Consultation purgatory – it took several years to find a CSPS professional willing to help me look normal again. Each referral took months. Although adept at reconstruction, these specialists declined to offer treatment. One wonders why… perhaps it’s an island thing. However, one suggested Dr. Van Laeken. So, I followed up.
Her office responded quickly to set up a phone consultation. I had just a few questions – we talked – Dr. Nancy said “yes” each time – I was encouraged. She was my last hope – and the best decision of my life. The surgical plan had to happen in stages over time – but Dr. Nancy and her team organized every step for me. I had confidence in them, but having been betrayed then abandoned – I’d become emotionally fragile [there were tears]; yet her staff remained stoic, patient with me. Even with scant resources, I might have $$paid anything; yet, Dr. Van Laeken and her team provided real value for the money.
Two procedures, performed at Cambie Surgery, went exceedingly well. In contrast to previous experiences, Cambie staff were efficient, receptive and compassionate. They listened and responded kindly to me. The facility itself is impressive – I felt safe – in good hands. This was major surgery, yet I had little pain and healed well – on all levels. Dr. Nancy’s needlework is exquisitely precise… her instructions were easy to follow, and now the fine scars are fading. In our final reveal appointment, once the bandages were removed, we were both quite pleased with the result.
This final surgery also coincided with the implementation of Bill 36 [Health Professions & Occupations Act] which entailed new stringent Nonhospital facilities standards – thus extra last minute pre-surgical testing. Dr. Van Laeken’s MOA [Miranda] deftly arranged immediate hospital tests that would have taken weeks – which speaks to how efficient & influential her office is [given that thousands of patients are competing for the same resources] I was shuttled to the head of the line.
Now I look in the mirror without shame or regret. I feel myself a normal woman again and can go on with my Life. What few years I have left will be spent quietly celebrating a happy marriage.
I reckon there are ladies reading this who need to make a decision in spite of their fears. As an Independent Medical Examiner [Specialist Referral Clinic] and UBC clinical professor – an authority on surgical practices, Dr. Nancy ranks among the best in her field. She has a reputation for excellence, and the greatness of soul [Aristotle] needed to rescue the lost ones out there.
Caveat Emptor one cannot say the same of her VIHA colleagues.
