DIEP Flap Gave Me my Sense of Self Back
Put simply, Dr. Basu gave me my life back. In 2017 I had breast cancer and lost my left breast. I chose not to undergo immediate reconstruction because I wanted my radiologist to have the best possibility to kill my cancer without worrying about a breast expander in the way. This left me with one rather droopy right breast and very tough flat tissue on my left. It is hard to reconstruct radiated tissue. After being beat down by chemo, radiation, estrogen hormone blockers, and surgery that disfigured my natural body, it was very hard to maintain my always high natural self confidence and sense of self as a woman.
I went on a search for reconstruction options for radiated skin and found a doctor that was answering this question in multiple places around the Internet. His answers were both compassionate and full of knowledge about the anatomy and physiology of tissues after cancer and radiation. I looked him up. It was Dr. Basu and I found he was about a 240 mile drive from my location in Houston. I made an appointment.
Dr. Basu examined me and went over my best options. He told me about the DIEP flap procedure. Then told me to wait 6 more months so I could heal fully from my cancer treatment ordeal. In 2018 I had the very large and extensive DIEP flap surgery. It was a hard recovery, but the results were almost miraculous. My new breast was incredible, warm to the touch, alive. It had a couple of stretch marks that my stomach had gained during the birth of my children. It was amazing to see my stomach flat and rearranged as my breast. I followed Dr. Basu’s instructions to the letter. My healing was simply amazing. Three months later I had my remaining right breast lifted and augmented to match the new incredible left breast. Dr. Basu somehow masterfully made my breasts match using entirely different methods. My body now feels amazing, my clothes fit so well and I look great. I feel good mentally and figuratively. I feel like myself again, whole and strong.
I can’t thank Dr. Basu enough for his expertise and compassion, and the kindness and caring of his incredible staff. I would recommend him in a heartbeat to anyone looking to improve their lives and the way they feel about their body.
