Traumatised

feel compelled to share my deeply disappointing and concerning experience with Dr. Stefano Cotrufo, in the hopes of helping other women make informed decisions.

I had breast implant surgery in 2015 performed by Dr. Cotrufo. In 2019, the brand of implants used in my procedure — Allergan — was discontinued and recalled globally due to serious health risks. However, I was never contacted by Dr. Cotrufo or his office regarding this critical update. No follow-up. No warning. No professional duty of care.

Fast forward to 2023, I began experiencing pain in my breasts. During an ultrasound, the technician advised me: “Once your baby is born, you should get those implants removed.” That stuck with me. I decided I would wait until I was finished having children to have them removed and get a breast uplift.

While breastfeeding, I developed mastitis with severe pain, and feared something was wrong with the implants. A surgeon advised an MRI, which confirmed the implants should be removed. The issue? I no longer had the implant details — after 11 years, I had no record of the brand.

I contacted Dr. Cotrufo’s PA to ask for this essential information, and was met with dismissive excuses like “I’m on annual leave.” No urgency, no assistance, no empathy. I was already feeling incredibly anxious and vulnerable, and this only added to my distress.

Despite that, I went ahead with a mastopexy and implant removal — a costly procedure (which I’m fortunate to be able to afford, unlike many women). After being under general anaesthetic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., I awoke knowing something wasn’t right.

The surgeon said to me:
“In my 30 years of practice, it’s very uncommon to see implants in this condition — and it makes sense why Dr. Stefano didn’t want to tell you the brand name.”
Instead of the typical 5-minute removal, it took hours to clean up the silicone that had oozed out like marmalade and adhered to the surrounding tissue. It was shocking and traumatic.

Since that surgery, I’ve tried to contact Dr. Cotrufo directly — and have received no response whatsoever. No acknowledgment. No apology. Nothing.
Extremely unprofessional. Just be aware if you are thinking of becoming his next patient.

I fully understand that a surgeon cannot predict the long-term safety of an implant brand — but when Allergan implants were banned and recalled in 2019, a phone call or follow-up to patients would have been the ethical and correct protocol. That didn’t happen.

I’m lucky the silicone didn’t spread to my lymph nodes, or this could have been an even more serious health situation.

To other women: if you’ve had breast implants with Dr. Cotrufo, or Allergan implants in general, please check your records and take charge of your health. You deserve a surgeon who provides long-term care — not just a one-time procedure.

This was never just about aesthetics — this was about safety, accountability, and trust
