*U.S. review*: Dr. Surmeli and his team went above and beyond in professionalism, care, comfort, and quality. I am a week out and already love my results. I will be providing a lengthy review below since online reviews were my main resource and catalyst to finally book a breast aug in Turkey.
SIZING/BREAST AUG SPECIFICS: I am a muscular, active woman. I primarily run, bike, and lift weights. I am 5’3 and around 140lbs, which is mainly lean muscle. I got 300-325ccs, Moderate Profile Plus (MP+), silicone implants below the muscle. I wanted to look more feminine and have cleavage, but at the same time look natural and be able to exercise comfortably. I already love the sizing and think they will be perfect when they settle.
FINDING A DOCTOR: I have been researching places to get a breast augmentation for about 1.5 years, both in the U.S. and in Turkey. I happened to be living overseas, and decided to get my surgery in Turkey based on proximity and price. I was incredibly nervous about doing a surgery overseas and arranging the entire thing virtually. I had spoken with a lot of the popular plastic surgery “volume clinics”, so to speak, that have a large staff and large patient load, and was very sketched out by their processes and sometimes pressure tactics. I wanted to pick a doctor — not a large practice. I found Dr. Surmeli through reviews and committed to a virtual consultation due to his professional online presence and his American/European board certifications (you can search for doctors with accreditation on the American Board of Plastic Surgery official site). These qualifications made me feel at ease that Dr. Surmeli understood U.S. standards of care and would be able to provide the care I was accustomed to. I HIGHLY recommend doing a virtual consultation — he allowed me all the time I needed to ask questions, and he answered any questions or concerns I had in great depth and with research to back it. The consult put me at ease and solidified my choice.
PLANNING FOR THE PROCEDURE: Ruken was my patient coordinator and was amazing from the time I decided to initially book the procedure, all the way through / after my time in country. She communicates clearly and responds quickly, and is incredibly accommodating. She helped arrange all transport to/from the hotel and hospital, and was always available to field any last minute or one-off questions I had.
She also arranged accommodation, which is a range of hotels of your choosing. I initially booked at one of the hotel options close to the hospital but upon arrival, decided I didn’t really like the location and wanted more of a “home” feel. This is not to the detriment of the team at all — I didn’t put much thought into the living situation. I booked an AirBnb and Ruken kindly cancelled the hotel reservation. I personally prefer to have separate room/kitchen/living space, especially living somewhere for a week+. OF NOTE, I had 2 friends with me for support, which was imperative for booking at an AirBnB type of accommodation. I could not lift anything or do basic tasks. If you do not have people to help you post-op, I recommend relying on a hotel staff.
SURGERY WEEK: I did my in-person consult the day before surgery. The hospital is incredibly nice/professional and looks very upscale. During my consult, Dr. Surmeli went over the procedure and his recommendations for my sizing, and allowed me as much time as I needed to ask questions. I never felt like I was under time pressure. Dr. Surmeli and his team always gave me their undivided attention when I was in the room. Dr. Surmeli is truly very knowledgeable, and seems to work with safety and comfort at the forefront of his practice. He is not one of those doctors that will recommend surgeries simply for more money or to make the customer happy, even if it puts them at risk. He will ensure that your safety is primary and your aesthetic goals are met within reason. His candor and honesty about risks of certain sizes or surgeries for me (I was considering lipo as well) were greatly welcomed and appreciated. He always explained the medical/scientific reasons behind why certain surgeries or breast sizes/positioning were/weren’t appropriate medically. His honesty and objectivity made me much less nervous about the surgery. He treats surgery as a science and an art.
When it came to sizing, I greatly appreciated his recommendations on sizing ranges and his explanations of their limitations since my main criteria was being able to continue my active lifestyle. Dr. Surmeli truly listened and took my aesthetic goals and desires into every interaction.
The day of surgery, I was still pretty undecided about the size I wanted (I was thinking I wanted to go smaller than I had previously told his team). He told me he would size me on the table with the smaller size and if I needed to go slightly bigger to reach the aesthetic goals I previously explained, he would make those adjustments. I was very happy with this solution and trusted him to choose implants that were natural to me.
SURGERY/POST-OP: I stayed 1 day in the hospital and was very comfortable. The rooms are nice and spacious. I was discharged after a day and returned to my AirBnB. I had two friends there to support me during/after surgery which is ABSOLUTELY necessary. I am young and fit and thought I could muscle through it on my own — The first 2 days I needed help getting out of bed and doing basic tasks. After day 3 post-op, the pain/tightness decreases significantly and mobility increases. I had 2 “control” appointments every 2 days after surgery where Dr. Surmeli checked my progress and his team changed/cleaned my dressings and provided me post-op instructions. He encourages weekly updates throughout the healing process so that he can check progress and provide feedback, so the care extends long after you leave the country.
All in all, the care that Dr. Surmeli and his team provided blew the U.S. plastic surgery model out of the water. If I ever want to do another aesthetic surgery, I would go to Dr. Surmeli regardless of proximity. I am so happy with how the entire process went and I love my results.
