Finally Feel in Proportion! 5", 57kg with Broad Shoulders, 350cc Round, HP Silicone Under the Muscle

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in boobs. Growing up, my mum would openly discuss and show me how unhappy she was with her breasts, as they essentially deflated after having kids. She would say that I got her side of the family’s breasts – small - and together we would buy push up bras, chicken fillets and additional removal padding to encourage a nicer, fuller breast shape. When we were trying on clothes – the absence of, or how to achieve cleavage with it, was always brought up. Over the years, I would ask my friends ‘would you ever get a boob job’ and breasts were something always I noticed on other people – even asking those who I thought had great boobs what size they were (the most common answer that was I was admiring was ‘10D’).
I’ve always been a 10B/ 12A, which is similar to my other Asian friends but they have more petite frames. I’m very into my fitness, and over the years my physique has really set into my frame which is short (153cm), but I have broad shoulders. My mum told me I look like a swimmer when this started developing, and whilst I loved my fitness journey I was feeling increasingly self-conscious about my frame and wearing the clothes I wanted to wear. I would try to avoid singlets and look for long sleeved tops – but to compensate for covering my arms I would wear low cut styles – and realised the lack of cleavage of my chest without a bra was really bothering me.
When the lockdown was introduced in NSW in June 2021 I was organising my lasik eye surgery and realised that lockdown was really the perfect opportunity to have a surgery, take minimal time off work with the current working from home mandate and recover discreetly – things that I did feel would be a barrier to me actually going ahead with the surgery in ‘normal times’.
At the end of July I decided it was worth it to book in a consultation and once and for all, decide with an expert if this is something I wanted. A friend of mine had her breast augmentation done in Bella Vista, but I knew I wanted something closer to home on the north shore. From a Google search I found Dr Ellis Choy in Northbridge. He was close to me, highly rated with great reviews and his offering also specialised in Asian plastic surgery which I found very interesting. I had an idea of how much I wanted to spend and his team were able to confirm rough fees over the phone, so I was able to book in a consultation for just over a week’s time, at the start of August and I was super excited.
As part of my first consultation I met Siobhan, who is Dr Choy’s Cosmetic Surgery Consultant. Siobhan was warm, welcoming and asked me initial questions such as how long have I been considering this, what is my lifestyle. I enquired about fat grafting and she confirmed I would not be suitable for this considering my active lifestyle – it was also a more expensive procedure so I was fine with this. She mentioned that they had a slot open up for surgery on the 16 August (13 days from now) should I want to go ahead.
After this I went in to meet Dr Choy and immediately took a liking to him. I have had a handful of surgeries in the past with negative experiences with surgeons so I knew how important it was for me to go with someone that I liked. He was friendly, warm and the consultation involved getting to know me, such as what my ideal cup size was (I said C but remarked breasts I had admired before were a D!) and then he took me through 4 scenarios to determine how I wanted to feel after surgery.
Once we had had an initial chat, he assessed my breasts and took measurements and photos. He sat me down and we discussed the plan:
- 300 – 350cc
- Textured, over the muscle due to my active lifestyle
- Medium profile
- Round
I felt like he really understood my frame and what would look good. I then saw Siobhan who took me through the costs, and kindly put the surgery date on hold. I left and had a chat to my mum and a friend who had also had a breast augmentation and called Siobhan back to lock in the surgery date with a $1,000 deposit.
I had 2 more consultations with Dr Choy. On Thursday in the same week I came back wondering if we should go bigger and we landed with
- 350 – 400cc
- Smooth, under the muscle (decided aesthetic was more important to me than my exercise)
- High profile
- Round
We had one last chat on the phone the next week, the Tuesday prior to surgery. I stressed that although I knew I would have to buy a new bra, I really just wanted to fill out the clothes I already owned better so didn’t want to go too big. We made the final call and agreed:
- 325 – 375cc
- Smooth, under the muscle
- High profile
- Round
Ahead of surgery day there was still a feeling of ‘I can’t believe I’m actually doing this’. Of course, there was some worry and nervousness in the back of my mind that comes with undergoing any major surgery and possible complications, but overall when I thought about what I would look like post recovery, I was so excited. My surgery was booked in for the afternoon, I fasted from about 7am in the morning and found this fine as I was busy wrapping up my work and feeling nervous/ excited.
My mum dropped me to North Shore Specialist Day Hospital and after checking in I met a nurse who introduced herself as Philomena. She sat me down with a checklist – such as when was the last I ate, if I wanted them to fill my post-surgery prescription meds for me and if I had ice packs. I didn’t realise I needed these, but thankfully was able to put a call into mum to arrange for these. Philomena also showed me the pre and post-operative instructions which I had not received until this point. I was stressed that I hadn’t received this information – particularly the checklist of medications to cease prior to surgery. She then went through post operation medications:
- Valium – to relax the breast muscles and to be taken until all finished
- Antibiotics – to be taken until all finished
- Panedeine Forte – the best way to manage the pain and avoid needing to use the more intense pain medication was to take this regularly and not wait for the pain to arrive
- More intense pain medication e.g. Endone to take as required with severe breakthrough pain
Finally, Dr Choy came to see me to do final markups and repeat the plan – 350cc silicone, smooth, high profile implants under the muscle, but that ultimately I was happy for him to make the final judgement. Shortly after I was taken into the operating room.
When I woke up (around 5PM) I was extremely nauseous and had to get used to not using my arms to sit up and adjust myself. Dr Choy came over, he confirmed that we went with 350cc, with 375cc being too big for what he knew I wanted. He and a nurse took a photo for me – however someone else’s phone had ended up in my patient bag. I said this wasn’t my phone but they thought I was still groggy from the anaesthesia so didn’t believe me until after they had taken the picture. They then had to find the other patient, explain the mix-up and request the photo deleted – I was too nauseous to follow up.
I also woke up with my post op medications purchased by the hospital for me even though I told them I would get them myself with my mum after surgery. Considering my post op state I ended up being OK with this.
Dr Choy left after he confirmed my follow up appt in 10 days time. After throwing up I felt better but couldn’t leave the hospital until after I peed which took a couple of hours. It was stressful as the nurses had already called my mum to pick me up prematurely (around 6PM), so I felt pressure from my mum and the two remaining nurses hanging around waiting for me to do this and that part was upsetting. I didn’t leave the hospital until approx. 830PM. It was at this time I started to feeling a sore dry throat as a result of the anaesthesia/ breathing tube – I took throat lozenges for the next few days to manage this.
That night, I iced my chest and set up my ‘wall of pillows’. I slept reasonably well and the next day felt little to no discomfort.
In terms of recovery, I was impressed that I managed to stick to my (potentially bad) plan as I only took 1.5 days off work. However on the Wednesday that I returned, that morning I had woken up with severe pain so took the medicine prescribed (palexia IR) at 3AM and another at 7AM. As a result, I was extremely nauseous and dry retching all day. I managed to get through work by just taking phone calls but I had my eyes closed and was lying on the couch. I attempted to vomit numerous times but nothing came up – probably because all I could stomach was a piece of toast. This made me scared to take palexia again should I continue to have severe pain.
North Shore Specialist Day Hospital didn’t end up making contact with me until Thursday (3 days post opp) where I explained the nausea and they said I could contact my surgeon for a different pain medication. I decided not to follow through with this because I couldn’t be bothered. I started going for walks and was pleased I could accommodate low impact exercise.
On Sunday (6 days post opp) I started to struggle sleeping on my back, but continued to do so. My chest started to feel tight and I decided to take another palexia as I was struggling to fall asleep.
Even though I knew that they would sit high after surgery and gradually ‘drop and fluff’, I already felt and could see how much better in proportion I felt. They didn’t feel too foreign and I love getting used to my new figure – one that really suits my frame and build. I saw Dr Choy and his team again on Thursday (10 days post opp) where they removed my dressings, took photos and replaced with tape. Dr Choy showed me before and after photos. The first thing I noticed was how great my shoulders and arms (features that I felt self-conscious of previously) looked – they were complimented and looked proportionate with my frame thanks to having fuller breasts.
So far, I’ve bought a couple of new sport bras as I have to wear this for 6 weeks but it’s been exciting trying on a few old clothes and seeing how much better I fit them. I am so excited for them to continue to ‘drop and fluff’, for the lockdown to hopefully end come summer and for me to head out and show them off! Really pleased with the journey so far and looking forward to getting back into exercise when I can (another 2 weeks for lower body) and checking in with Dr Choy and his team later in September.
