Dr Carpin is Erratic, Abusive and Unprofessional.
I am reporting this incident to:
1) Alert the staff that I need a refund of my $6,425 payment because I have not heard back since my first request on July 6, 2021 and
2) Report Dr Carpin’s erratic and abusive behavior.
On the morning of July 2, 2021 I was scheduled for breast augmentation surgery with Dr Carpin. After meeting with all other necessary members of the surgery team and getting prepped for surgery, Dr Carpin came to talk with me and my daughter, Katie, about the procedure. We had a few final questions about the placement of the implant being below or above the muscle. These questions stemmed from the prior appointments I had with her and my subsequent research on the best placement for me. After looking into this further, I found the information she had told me during our consultations was utterly false. Dr Carpin misinformed me about capsular contracture – she said there is far less risk above the muscle, the truth is there is less risk when the implant is placed below the muscle. She misinformed me about the effect of implant placement on mammograms – she said viewing mammograms above and below the muscle are the same, the truth is it’s harder to read the mammogram when implants are placed above the muscle. She misinformed me that an implant above the muscle looks more natural – every resource I’ve read says implants below the muscle are more natural looking. Not to mention I have a very bony chest with little natural breast tissue (I’m an A cup) but she said she could put collagen or fat in my upper chest if needed, I’ve never heard of this.
Upon us asking these questions, Dr Carpin became extremely defensive and abusive. She said we disrespected her and did not trust her judgement. She was very forceful and aggressive about me choosing to have my implants put below my muscle. She became more and more vocal, to the point that we could not respond or get a word in. Her outrageous behavior continued when she began reprimanding us, saying things like, if she were a male doctor we wouldn’t question her judgement, that she’s a scientist and an artist and people lately are not respecting her work, that she doesn’t get the respect she deserves. Her comments became even more ridiculous when she started comparing breast augmentation surgery to baking a cake and playing with blocks. Dr Carpin stood above Katie and wagged her finger inches away from her face while scolding her asking her, “Have you gone to medical school? Are you a board-certified surgeon? Because I am.” Driving my daughter to tears. She then went on to diagnose me at this time with dementia and that I should not be making this decision. I was highly offended and do not think this accusation is at all appropriate for a doctor to make under these heated circumstances. The beratement continued when she scolded me for taking up four times more of her office time than is typical – though I only had two appointments with her. She told Katie that she wasn’t a good guardian because she didn’t go to the pre-op appointments with me (I don’t have or need a guardian). The doctor reprimanded us for 20+ minutes without answering our questions.
Finally, Dr Carpin said this surgery should be cancelled because I couldn’t make a decision. She then went back and forth between cancelling the surgery and, in a passive-aggressive retort, saying that she would place the implants wherever I wanted, because I know best. She repeated that the surgery should not take place and that the only consequences were that Katie had to get up early and that I had an IV in my arm, insinuating I would get my money back. At that point I noticed her hands shaking and she was visibly upset. With her erratic mental state and physical tremors I did not trust her at that point to do the surgery and agreed to leave.
I contacted her office on July 6, 2021 for a refund but have not heard back. Please refund the $6,425 I paid.
