Last month, my friend told me she gave herself new boobs for her 60th birthday present. I never pictured her doing that, and really admired her for taking the step. I looked into it about 30 years ago, but just never followed through. Now that I'm divorcing (after 31 years of marriage), and with such support from my friend, I'm ready to do this for myself.
Today I went to see Dr. Miles in Redlands, CA, for a free consultation. He took some measurements of my body, and I tried various on sizers to see how I looked. I also brought in some pictures of breasts, like his office staff suggested. He told me I would not need my breasts lifted (I really thought I might since they looked droopy to me), and that he is looking at the round silicone ones for me, 435 cc, which would make me a full C to small D size. I asked about loss of sensitivity in the nipples and he said statistics show there is only a 2-3% chance of that happening; that most people have increased sensitivity (which goes away in 2-3 mos. after treatment).
I liked him and his staff very much, and will probably get a second opinion--just because it's always a good idea.

You're right - it's always a good idea to get a second opinion. I'm sorry you're going through a divorce, but I'm really glad you're doing something for yourself. Have you considered saline vs. silicone or whether you'll go over or under the muscle?

Whoops - must have missed where you said he's looking at silicone for you. I'll be interested to hear if other doctors have the same thought!

Thank you, Kelsie. Gotta keep putting one foot in front of the other, as my cousin told me! As far as choices, I've only seen one doctor so far, and he recommended silicone under the muscle.

Yesterday I found out I received a settlement ($) that I was waiting for, so that enables me to have the BA surgery done. Very happy and excited. I was telling another friend about my decision to get BA, and she recommended a doctor in Fullerton, so I'm going to see him this Friday. His name is Dr. Wald. This friend had a face lift and breast lift done at the same time by Dr. Wald and couldn't say enough good things about him. And I had no idea she had a face lift 3 years ago. Her face looks so natural and pretty. She said Dr. Wald is "an artist" and is on staff at UCLA. This friend also said she would drive me to and from the surgery and let me stay at her house post-surgery for a day or two in her spare room. Since I live alone, this is a Godsend. I was really worried about that. Meantime, I continue to get moral support and advice from my friend Underdog54 (real self username), who has been wonderful--even sent me a box of rice sizers she had made, along with a bralette for trying them on. Where would we be without our friends!?

Thanks, Brenda! I'm so happy for you and I'm glad I could help in any way. I'm also glad that you went to a consultation from a recommended doctor who's been used by someone you know, that's the best kind to have. I had to rely on blogs, reviews, stars and photos from my doctor's website but got super lucky. After doing it, I found that I knew two people who work with her and have had the surgery, so that makes me feel good, too.

After getting a referral from a friend, I had a consult yesterday with Dr. Wald in Fullerton. It went very well. The offices were right across the street from St. Jude Medical Center, and modern, so that already gave me a good feeling about it. I met with the doctor, he asked me questions about my health history and motivations. I told him I was recently divorced after 31 years and my spouse always told me I looked fine the way I was. But now that we've split, I'm doing this because I want to look my best. He looked at my chest, took measurements, etc. After trying on various sizers, we settled on 400 cc high-profile silicone, under the muscle.

The idea of using the high-profile implants was new to me, but Dr. Wald explained that they are better for me because of the narrow width of the base of my breasts. High-profile are narrower across, but have the same volume as the moderate profile. This wasn't mentioned at the consultation with the first doctor. Seems rather important!

The nurse said my breasts are close together so I should have some decent cleavage. We also talked about "side boob" and I learned what that meant. Don't really want that. Also learned that during the procedure the nurse and doctor consult with each other as to what actual size will ultimately go in. They don't really know for sure until they open me up! I didn't know that. I thought once they order, they get installed!

After I got home I put in the 400 cc rice sizers my friend gave me, and went for a long walk. I started to wonder if the weight from implants might create any back problems. I didn't feel any "pain," after the walk, maybe just a little twinge in the back muscles getting used to it (?)

Hi! The rice weighs a lot more than silicone, so don't worry about that, just focus on the size. I went out and tried on bras of different sizes with the rice sizers to get a better idea of what I wanted. I decided upon the approx. 375cc, which turned out to be about the right size for 400cc implants. I can't even feel my implants if I jog, and that's what I was worried about the most - the loss of freedom from bras and heavy boobs. Saline implants are heavier than silicone, too, and having them under the muscle helps support them. I think mine has too much "side boob," with my moderate profile, but my chest is wide and my breasts are far apart, so there may be no way around that. The doctor knows what he is talking about.

When you are on the operating table, he will have two different sizers and try both on you and then they will decide the best one between the two before installing the one that works the best according to the photos of your wish boobs.

Post-Op Today: Another Milestone in the Journey to Boobdom

My breast implant surgery was on Thursday, April 20. A friend drove me. Just before surgery, both the nurse and the doctor asked me again to confirm size preference. I told them I liked the way the 375 cc looked, so I said 400 cc should be adequate, which is what we talked about on the prior doctor visit. The doctor asked if I was to go higher or lower, which would it be? And I said lower. He ended up implanting 405 cc. As of yesterday, April 23, I didn’t really know how I looked. Still had the stretchy ace bandages wrapped all around my chest. Boy they can sure be itchy.

I opted for the pain pump ($250 extra), which is a super lightweight device that hangs around your neck in a fabric pouch. The actual name is On-Q Pain Relief System. It automatically administers pain medicine to your breasts through two very thin catheters. I’m glad I got that, because even with the pain pump I had a fair amount of pain. Surgery went fine according to the doctor and nurses. I had zero nausea. I used the prescribed anti-nausea patch behind the ear and didn’t need to take any further anti-nausea pills prescribed. After surgery, I stayed for 3 nights at another friend’s house. I couldn’t have managed this whole thing without these ladies and my other dear friend, Underdog56, who is a member of this site.

Today, April 24, at the post-op appointment the ace bandages were removed, dressings to incisions changed, pain pump catheters taken out, and was given my very own white sports bra. Ahhhhh. It felt good to get out of those ace bandages and to see how I looked. Doctor says I look great, and wants to see me again May 5. I like the way I’m looking, too, so far. Tomorrow my friend from 4th grade is driving up from San Diego area to spend the night. I would say the hardest part of this whole thing has been finding a comfortable sleeping position, on my back, at the 60-degree angle they want you at.
P.S. I tried to add photos and site won't let me. Not sure why not. They don't exceed maximum size and are jpg, so don't know why I can't upload.
