Rocky start to my BBL journey with Spectrum Aesthetics (Dr. Aristides Martinez)
I'm a 37, almost 38 working professional mother of 2, and I've been married for 16 years. I've been considering having the BBL surgery for about 3 years now. My sister-in-law told me about Spectrum Aesthetics after she had scheduled her surgery them. I researched Spectrum and found mixed reviews. I decided to stick with them because it seemed to be mixed with all other cosmetic surgeons as well. Either the reviews were too good to be true, too low to even consider or half and half. Once I made my decision, I requested a consultation online via the online chat box. I was told someone would get back to me. After a few days went by, I mentioned to my sister-in-law that I hadn't heard from Spectrum yet. She suggested that I complete the online registration form and email it to the coordinator she had been working with, Liz. Sure enough, I complete the online docs, email them to Liz and no response. Since I had researched this place, I knew they had several complaints regarding their lack of communication and long wait times for appointments including the day of surgery. After a few days, I decided to email Liz again and asked if she had seen my original email. She finally responds and things get moving. I send in my photos and get the "ok" for my requested procedure. One hitch, after I sent my pics, Liz wrote me back telling me I'd been a good candidate for and Extended Tummy Tuck. This was strange because I clearly requested a BBL consultation. I thanked her and told her that I was only interested in the BBL. Right away, she informed me per the surgeon (she never stated who), that I already have a lot of loose skin and the liposuction will make the situation worse. So I could choose to do the BBL but I'd have to accept the risk of having even more loose skin and ultimately end up coming back for a TT. Since I couldn't do the BBL and TT and the same time, I made the decision to move forward with the BBL and pending my results, possibly schedule an extended TT at a later time. Liz also informed me that my BMI would need to be under 34 and my weight would need to be under 200lbs. As I mentioned earlier, my sister-in-law told about this place and had already scheduled her appointment so the plan was for us to go together. When I was finally ready to book, both Ghurani and Ortega were full until April so I was offered Martinez, a new doctor at Spectrum but over 25 years of industry experience. So I figure, ok, this should be fine, in fact he had been practicing longer than both Ghurani and Ortega. Here's where I went wrong, I agreed to have the surgery with Martinez, get my weight and BMI down, paid my deposit, signed the contract and then I finally decided to hit the net to find photos, videos and/or reviews for Dr. Martinez. After all, almost every other surgeon had tons of posts on Facebook, Instagram and even spapchat so why would he be any different. All I found was a profile of him on My Cosmetic Surgery Website and a youtube video. BTW, the link to the profile I just mentioned, was sent to me after I reached out to Liz saying I couldn't find any info on him on the Spectrum website or anywhere else...since this time, I've checked the web almost daily hoping something will turn-up so I can have an idea of what to expect of his work. The Spectrum Instagram page has since added two photos which is nice but I need more. I read on someone's blog that a lot of surgeons don't post their work because they don't want anyone to steal their technique, not sure I buy that but whatever. I also thought it could be an age thing and the fact he's been practicing for so long he's just not into the social media stuff, especially since most docs do it to drum up business. If he's well established, then there's no further need for him to "advertise" so to speak. Yet, I'm still concerned that I can't find any reviews or photos and he's been practicing for 25 years, 10 of those years at My Cosmetic Surgery. So you would think he'd have something posted there, WRONG! They have nothing other than his profile and one youtube video. Not to mention, I've searched everywhere and can't find anything saying he's board certified. I know that's not a requirement but it's certainly a nice comfort. I did reach out Liz to ask if anything opened up for Ortega and he did have an opening which was 5 days earlier than my current surgery date. Of course, that really didn't work for me since I had already made flight and hotel arrangements to travel with my sister-in-law. Also, at the time she offered the new date, I hadn't received my medical clearance and blood work forms. So I didn't want to go through the trouble of making changes for the new date without even having clearance.Â
When I did finally receive the clearance forms (not without having to ask Liz for them 1st), it became apparent that the earlier date definitely wouldn't work because Spectrum required that I have my medical forms to them at least 2 weeks before my surgery. The medical form was received on 2/21 and the two week deadline is 2/27. Given the fact that I was still working on getting my weight under 200 and BMI under 34, running to the doc to getting medical clearance was unlikely because I still needed to loose a few pounds. I'm at 202 as of today and I see my doc for clearance on Tuesday. So at this time, I'm still scheduled with Martinez. I'm trying to be optimistic but another issue with their communications has occurred since I received my medical forms. Now Liz took a while to initially respond to me but once we connected, we remained in constant contact either via email or phone. If I called and left a message, she would call me back within the hour. and email was already responded to the same day. Now as for Luis, he is the pre-op specialist that emailed me my medical forms and answered the initial questions I had about getting the paperwork and lab results to them by the 2 week deadline. Since then, I emailed two additional questions to Luis, in two separate emails. One was regarding seeing my primary care physician vs going to an urgent care clinic for my medical clearance. The 2nd was regarding financial paperwork regarding my surgery. I initially posed my 2nd question to Liz and she responded right away and referred me to Luis. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a response from Luis on either of my questions as of yet. Instead of waiting for him to respond to question 1, I went ahead and made an appointment with a PCP instead of going to an urgent care clinic. As for question 2 regarding my financials, I'll probably reach out to Luis again on Tuesday after my doc appointment and hopefully I can get a response. If not, I guess I'll just have to be prepared to come up with other means for payment.Â
I know this is really long post so kudos to those that actually make it to the end! Feel free to ask any questions or provide any feedback/comments. Thanks!

Hey ladies, I received my medical…
Hey ladies,
I received my medical clearance today, just waiting on my labs. I weighed in at 201, BMI 34.6. I'm sure Spectrum will tell me to shed a few more pounds but that should be easy. My real concern is my hemoglobin levels. I was low a few months ago but I've been taking iron to increase.

Hey, so I was also able to find this Facebook photo from 2012 for Dr. Martinez. It looks like he also went by the name Dr. Ari and work at Karuna Beauty Cosmetic Center. The page had 1 review and was from the medical assistant who works there.
There must somebody out there's that's been operated on by this man.
