I originally had fixed braces as a teenager but like so many other people I did not continue to wear the retainers after a few years. Now a day after my 38th birthday I have had my Smile Tru trays fitted. I bought a Groupon voucher which actually turned out to be for CFast fixed braces which go on the front 6 teeth but my dentist said that the results were less predictable and that they could make my overbite worse! Something that I definitely don't want to happen. I'm hoping that it may get slightly better so I ended up paying double the price of my initial Groupon Voucher but fingers crossed it'll be worth it.
I had to have Interproximal Reduction between my teeth, one between my top teeth which aren't really crooked and about 7 on my lower teeth between them all. I was nervous about the IPR as I have very sensitive teeth already but it was more annoying that painful, the retractor he used to hold open my mouth was pretty uncomfortable after about half an hour. My dentist did the IPR mainly manually so it took quite a while. I have never even had the space to floss between my teeth so I had no room at all for my teeth to move.
I was then fitted with my 1st trays and shown how to remove them with a little tool, it is a bit fiddly but I managed and then was shown how to put them back in and bite down on some foam 'chewies' to get them fully on.
I then went straight to MacDonalds with my now starving children and ordered a milkshake, fries, chicken nuggets and an apple pie ready to quickly eat before my night shift. My children had already started teasing me about my lisp in the car and I could feel the edges of the tray felt sharp in some places. I got home and pulled my trays out and Ouch!! Wow! the bottom one where my teeth are pretty crooked was so painful to remove I wouldn't have been surprised if when I looked at the tray my teeth were all in there. (Luckily they weren't!) It is amazing how sore and lose my teeth already felt after little over an hour! Eating was odd but the relief I felt having them off was huge. I had to hurry and get to work though so I brushed my teeth and am now at work writing this. It is now the middle of the night and I haven't tried to take them off yet, I would usually have been snacking all night and have even refused sweets!! Unheard of for me! I am little already so really need to sort out when I will eat as I eat meals slowly and snack all day/night usually and I don't want to lose any weight. Putting the trays back in after that brief time without felt awful and I trapped a bit of my cheek right at the back which was sore. Now it is nearly 4am and I had them fitted at about 6pm, they feel okay but my mouth feels dry and irritated I can see a line on the inside of my mouth where the trays are kind of cutting me where they sit, I'm tempted to try to file them myself when I get home as I don't now see my dentist for 4 weeks. Once that appointment is done I'll get my trays to take away and change them myself every 2 weeks.
I'm hoping that the soreness stays like this as it is totally bearable not requiring any pain relief and I am going on holiday for the weekend with my children and booked all inclusive breakfast and dinner and I'd really be love to be able to enjoy all the desserts and crepe breakfasts while not having to cook for once. I will upload some photos at home in the morning . I am about to attempt to remove them at my desk as I cannot leave to go anywhere else - wish me luck :)
