OK, bear with me for a bit, because I have some big, heartfelt things to say. One year ago today I had facial feminization surgery (FFS) with Dr. Spiegel, which entailed hairline advancement, brow contouring, nose reduction, mandible contouring, and Adam's Apple reduction. I came out as a transgender woman about six months before this surgery, and in reaching the decision to make that leap, the plan to have this FFS surgery was a major factor. It made the dream of being able to live as myself seem possible, which was an incredible gift, truly. I had never thought it would ever be possible for me to do this in my life -- to live authentically and with integrity as who I had always known myself to be. Dr. Spiegel made this possible. The results have been amazing. Dr. Spiegel is a plastic surgeon, but to me he is so much more. I am a transgender woman, and I am certain that there are many like me alive today (thousands in fact) and many more who have lived throughout history. Yet I have somehow been so profoundly blessed to be living today, when not only is transgender identity finally being accepted, but medical innovation is making quantum leaps in that regard. Dr. Spiegel is truly at the edge of this. He is really my own modern day da Vinci. He has dedicated his life to studying these things and has developed FFS methods ahead of so many others working in this area. I should know -- I am the direct beneficiary of this. I really cannot overstate how he has helped me be able to comfortably live as myself. My life is fundamentally different today from how it was a year ago. I have so much more confidence to live as myself. In the past six months, I actually went to my twentieth high school reunion, and it was an amazing, positive experience. And over the next few months, I am doing things I never would have dreamed were possible, from leading a workshop at a transgender conference to speaking to the student body at the high school I graduated from. I now have a fire in me to do these things, and it would not be burning nearly as bright without Dr. Spiegel's help. I am a skeptic by nature and read so many reviews and other materials online before I decided to have FFS with Dr. Spiegel. If you are the same, I bet you'll come to the same conclusion. So, a word about Dr. Spiegel's staff. Many of us are used to medical staff being distant, insensitive, and unhelpful. That is so not the case in the least with Dr. Spiegel's staff. They are professional yet friendly across the board. It is not an act -- they are there to help you out! Finally, there was actually something that I was a little unhappy with in the lead-up to my FFS. Dr. Speigel and his staff raised the topic multiple times with me that they recommended I have a lip lift along with the other FFS procedures I had signed up for. I was simply not into that idea and told them multiple times that I wasn't. I was aggravated about this at the time because of how it was brought up several times. Well, today I feel differently. I should have gotten the lip lift!! In fact, I have just paid for and scheduled that procedure. I should have done so last year, but I was too nervous that it would affect my ability to play the saxophone, which was my profession for many years. Fortunately, I will still be able to have this done. Bottom line, listen to Dr. Spiegel and his staff when they tell you what they recommend -- don't make the mistake I did!
