5 years post op.
Still really happy with my choice to have this major operation, no regrets whatsoever. I enjoy exercising and running and my body gives me very few complaints when I do. I have learned to accept the tightness that I constantly feel due to the tight stitches holding together my muscles. If I do too many crunches or a heavy ab session, I get incredibly sore still, and sometimes a little swollen possibly. I feel that this is a small price to pay for all the benefits surgery has provided.
6 weeks post op physio appointment.
So today I had a physio appointment at my PS's clinic. The physio first got me to lie down and expose my scar (still taped), she said it all looked good. Then she had a feel of my tummy and straight away pointed out the raised bit I have on my right rectus muscle. I said I wondered what it was as it was so sore an swollen for weeks. She said it is scar tissue and it should break down. Possibly this is where "more work was done" during the op (it may be connected to my hernia that was repaired simultaneously). I also have a pucker on left side which she thought could be scar tissue from my c section. So you live and learn! I have been going a bit crazy worrying about my abs being asymmetrical.....
I then had to lie on a yoga mat on my back and she talked me through several exercises that I can do between now & my 3 month check with PS. The aim of these is to loosen everything up a bit more and help free the skin and aid its movement. I must say I do feel some relief after doing these gentle stretches tonight. I feel positive that I can resume some exercises (albeit gentle ones) to help get myself back to normal functioning!
Oh, she also said that I should not run seriously until I can do the advanced 12 week exercises well (at 6 months ish)....This makes me wonder how bad for my body the 5/6 miles runs that I was doing before were! Oops.... I SO look forward to a fully- functional core that I will get back to a better-than-ever state this year. Yippee :D
Having not been on RS as much lately, it is great to check out all you lot and your newsflashes. I find it surreal to think about what we've achieved in so little time. And, my prior self/body is almost erased from my minds eye. I feel so much happier in myself. Hope you all do too!
